Abstract

This study examines the meaning and function of the Marhata Sinamot tradition in Batak Toba customary marriage and its relationship with Catholic teaching within the framework of the sociology of religion. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach through literature study, it draws on the thought of Durkheim, Weber, Marx, and Berger, as well as Church documents on inculturation. The findings show that Marhata Sinamot functions as a rite that reinforces social integration and kinship cohesion (Durkheim), and reflects actions driven by moral values and family social status (Weber). From Marx’s perspective, sinamot maintains economic relations and resource distribution patterns, while Berger highlights its role in shaping the social construction of reality that provides symbolic legitimacy to kinship structures. Although recognizing positive values such as respect for women’s dignity, family responsibility, and social solidarity, the Catholic Church emphasizes that sinamot does not determine the validity of the sacrament of marriage. The study concludes that Marhata Sinamot remains culturally and religiously relevant when practiced proportionally in line with Church teaching. Recommendations include pre-marital catechesis, dialogue with customary leaders, inculturated liturgical guidelines, and family economic empowerment to support faith formation and the preservation of Batak Toba cultural identity in modern society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the leadership model of the Apostle Paul and its relevance for contemporary leadership amid accelerating transformations across social, political, economic, and technological domains. The current leadership crisis—characterized by moral decline, corruption, and the misuse of authority—underscores the urgent need for a renewed leadership paradigm grounded in spiritual and moral integrity. Within this context, Paul is widely regarded as an archetype of transformative leadership who integrates vision, spirituality, and adaptability in his cross-cultural missionary work. Employing a descriptive qualitative method through a library research approach, this study examines primary and secondary sources, including the Scriptures, theological literature, and scholarly works on Christian leadership. The analysis demonstrates that Paul’s leadership is characterized by five core principles: serving as a divine calling, involving co-workers, nurturing spiritual maturity, delegating ministry according to gifts, and releasing responsibility without abandoning guidance. These principles emphasize collaboration, character formation, and ongoing mentorship, indicating their applicability across contemporary ecclesial and secular leadership contexts. Consequently, Paul’s leadership exemplifies a transformative model rooted in love, integrity, and spiritual responsibility, offering contemporary leaders a paradigm of servant leadership grounded in humility, faithfulness, and moral conviction.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively analyze the phenomenon of euthanasia through a multidimensional approach encompassing legal, medical, ethical, and Catholic moral perspectives, placing human dignity at the core of reflection. The issue of euthanasia presents a complex dilemma between respect for individual autonomy and the moral duty to uphold the universal value of life. In Indonesia, euthanasia is strictly prohibited as it violates the constitutional and criminal law principles protecting the right to life as a fundamental human right. Conversely, countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Canada have legalized euthanasia under stringent regulations requiring patient consent, terminal medical conditions, and professional responsibility from physicians. From a medical ethics perspective, the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice form the moral foundation for end-of-life decision-making. The Catholic Church, through Evangelium Vitae and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, rejects active euthanasia as contrary to the sanctity of life and human dignity as imago Dei. However, discontinuing extraordinary or disproportionate medical treatment is considered permissible under the principle of proportionality and respect for natural death. The study concludes that a multidimensional approach offers a balanced framework for understanding euthanasia, safeguarding human dignity, and promoting palliative care as a more ethical, humane, and just alternative.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the Catholic Church’s view on the morality of artificial contraception through magisterial teachings and its implications for contemporary family life. Using a qualitative approach and literature study method, this research analyzes official Church documents such as Casti Connubii, Humanae Vitae, Familiaris Consortio, Amoris Laetitia, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as well as academic literature and international survey reports that illustrate the perspectives of the faithful regarding contraception. Content analysis is conducted through data reduction, presentation of findings, and conclusion drawing to identify theological and pastoral themes related to the morality of contraception. The results reveal a significant discrepancy between the Church’s teachings which consistently reject artificial contraception for separating the unitive and procreative meanings of sexual relations, and the practices of many Catholics who tend to view contraception as a morally acceptable option within contemporary medical, social, and economic contexts. In conclusion, although the Church proposes Natural Family Planning methods as an alternative aligned with natural law, the gap between doctrine and lived reality requires a more dialogical, educational, and compassionate pastoral approach so that Church teaching remains relevant and meaningful in the lives of Catholic families today.

Abstract

This study explores in-depth the concept of freedom to marry within the framework of the Catholic Church’s Canon Law by examining three contemporary issues: the legal–moral capacity of prospective spouses, the Church’s position on same-sex marriage, and the juridical–moral status of couples who intentionally choose not to have children (childfree). Grounded in the Church’s teaching that marriage is a sacrament between one man and one woman—permanent, exclusive, and open to the gift of life—this research highlights that freedom and canonical capacity constitute fundamental prerequisites for the validity of the sacrament. Employing a qualitative approach through juridical-canonical analysis of the Code of Canon Law, magisterial documents, and contemporary moral theological scholarship, the study demonstrates that interior freedom and psychological maturity are essential elements in the giving of matrimonial consent. Furthermore, canonical impediments are understood as mechanisms safeguarding the integrity of the sacrament. Same-sex unions cannot be recognized either naturally or sacramentally, as they fail to fulfill the unitive and procreative dimensions of marriage. Likewise, an explicitly intended childfree choice may affect the validity of marriage as stipulated in Canon Law. The findings affirm the internal coherence of Canon Law in addressing modern moral challenges and present practical implications for marriage preparation, pastoral accompaniment, and moral formation. Consequently, this research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of freedom to marry, the sacramental purpose of matrimony, and the juridical and pastoral issues emerging within contemporary social contexts.

Abstract

The study offers a theological examination of the relationship between Christian faith, political life, and the vocation to build world peace, grounded in Gaudium et Spes articles 73–78. Within the contemporary global context marked by armed conflicts, democratic crises, ideological polarization, and structural injustice, the study reaffirms the enduring relevance of the Second Vatican Council’s social theology for the presence of Christian faith in the public sphere. Employing a qualitative research design, the study is based on a literature review with a textual–contextual analysis of conciliar documents, combined with critical engagement with works in social theology and Christian political ethics. The findings indicate that, from the perspective of faith, politics is understood as a form of service to the common good (bonum commune) and as a concrete arena for the enactment of the ethical responsibility of believers. The relationship between Church and state is articulated through the principle of a healthy and dialogical autonomy, which enables the Church to exercise its moral and prophetic role without succumbing to the logic of power or domination. Furthermore, Gaudium et Spes affirms that authentic peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the fruit of justice rooted in God’s reconciling work in Christ. Accordingly, Christian faith is presented as a transformative force with an essential public dimension, one that fosters the ethical engagement of believers in the pursuit of justice and peace in the world.

Abstract

The study examines the spirituality of Saint Ignatius of Loyola by positioning the discernment of spirits as the core of the Ignatian faith experience and by exploring its relevance within the context of contemporary Christian life. Drawing on Saint Ignatius of Loyola’s conversion experience as processed through profound reflection, the study demonstrates that Ignatian spirituality developed as an approach to faith rooted in the dynamics of the human interior life and in openness to the action of the Holy Spirit within concrete life situations. Employing a qualitative method through library research, the study analyzes the principal works of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, particularly the Spiritual Exercises, as well as relevant contemporary literature in spiritual theology. The findings indicate that the discernment of spirits cannot be reduced to a form of psychological introspection; rather, it constitutes an integrative spiritual process that engages reason, affectivity, and the will in responsible decision-making oriented toward Gospel values. The Spiritual Exercises are understood as a holistic method of personal transformation, while the principles of finding God in all things and magis affirm the continuing relevance of Ignatian spirituality in addressing the challenges of the modern world. Accordingly, Ignatian spirituality offers a reflective, dialogical, and transformative framework of faith for contemporary Christian living.

Abstract

Religious radicalism is a multidimensional phenomenon arising from the complex interaction of theological, social, political, economic, and educational factors. In pluralistic societies such as Pontianak, radicalism has the potential to disrupt social cohesion if not addressed through a comprehensive approach that integrates faith, ethics, and social practice. This study aims to analyze how Catholic monks and nuns internalize and actualize the spirit of nationalism as a counter-radicalism strategy, while also understanding the meaning of Church teachings in the context of diversity, democracy, and respect for human dignity. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious figures across several parishes of the Archdiocese of Pontianak and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that radicalism prevention is carried out through enlightening Catholic religious education, interfaith dialogue, the reinforcement of tolerance values, respect for human dignity, development of critical thinking, and active engagement in diverse communities. The implementation of the spirit of nationalism not only strengthens loyalty to the state but also affirms the Gospel’s call to live in fraternity, solidarity, and justice. Accordingly, monks and nuns serve as agents of social transformation, embodying Gospel values while enhancing cohesion and peace in pluralistic societies.

Abstract

The sacrament of baptism holds a highly fundamental position in the life of the Catholic Church, as it constitutes the foundation of Christian life and the gateway to the reception of other sacraments. This article examines the responsibilities of ministers of baptism from canonical and pastoral perspectives, focusing on three main issues: the recording of baptism for adopted children, the handling of lost baptismal records, and the eligibility of religious men and women to serve as godparents. The study employs a qualitative approach using a normative-theological method through a literature review of the Codex Iuris Canonici, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, various pastoral documents, and relevant academic literature. The findings indicate that the administration of baptism must be carried out validly, accurately, and with compassion, balancing administrative legal precision with pastoral sensitivity. In the baptism of adopted children, record-keeping must comply with both ecclesiastical law and civil documentation while safeguarding the child’s dignity and privacy. In cases of missing baptismal records, pastors are obliged to conduct proper canonical verification and, if necessary, perform conditional baptism to ensure legal certainty and spiritual welfare. Meanwhile, religious brothers and sisters may serve as godparents if they meet canonical requirements and possess the genuine capacity to accompany the baptized child’s growth in faith. This study affirms that every ecclesial act must be grounded in the principle salus animarum suprema lex—that the salvation of souls is the supreme law—so that the administration of baptism embodies an integral harmony between juridical order, pastoral care, and the saving love of Christ.

Abstract

This study explores the principles of wisdom in the Book of Proverbs, with a focus on the integration of moral, spiritual, and practical dimensions in human life. The study aims to identify the characteristics of the capable woman in Proverbs 31, analyze the central themes in Proverbs 1–9 related to preventive warnings, and examine the maintenance of the paths of wisdom in Proverbs 8 as a practical guide for ethical and prudent living. The research employs a qualitative-exegetical approach based on library studies, with the Book of Proverbs as the primary source and secondary sources including theological literature, contemporary biblical commentaries, and studies on wisdom literature. Data analysis was conducted thematically and hermeneutically through critical reading, contextualization, and textual interpretation. The findings indicate that the capable woman exemplifies an integration of piety, diligence, integrity, and social care through concrete actions, serving as a model of the harmonious integration of moral, spiritual, and practical principles. Warnings to avoid wicked companions and married women underscore the importance of moral awareness, selective social engagement, and social responsibility. The encouragement to pursue wisdom and maintain the paths of wisdom emphasizes character development, obedience to God, and consistent ethical practice. Overall, the study affirms that Proverbs presents a holistic moral framework integrating faith, ethics, and practical action, offering guidance for wise, ethical, and sustainable living.
