Abstract: This Community Service Program aims to broaden the knowledge and awareness of women from PKK groups and the local community of Pematang Johar Village regarding ecoprint as an environmentally friendly creative product based on local resources with economic potential. Pematang Johar Village is an agrarian area with 18 existing flagship products from various hamlets, yet ecoprint has never been introduced or developed. The activity was conducted through several stages, including preparation, socialization, and educational sessions using video presentations to demonstrate the ecoprint production process and digital marketplace platforms for product marketing. This program was implemented as an international community service activity involving collaboration between STIE Eka Prasetya and partner universities from Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Approximately 30 participants consisting of PKK members and village residents attended the activity. The results indicate that participants gained new cognitive skills, developed a new perspective on utilizing local leaves as creative resources, and showed strong interest in further developing ecoprint as a village-based economic activity. The evaluation results show a participant satisfaction rate of 98 percent. Abstract

The International Community Service program was implemented in Pematang Johar Village, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra—an emerging semi-periurban area characterized by socioeconomic vulnerabilities that heighten residents’ exposure to illegal online lending and fraudulent investment schemes. Utilizing the Participatory Action Learning and Action Research (PALAR) approach, the program integrated experiential learning, critical reflection, group discussions, and locally relevant case studies to strengthen financial literacy. Evaluation results indicate substantial improvements across key indicators, including knowledge of licensed financial institutions, the ability to identify illegal financial practices, and overall financial prudence. These findings demonstrate that contextualized, community-based financial education effectively enhances risk awareness and encourages safer financial behaviour. The program further provides practical insights for designing scalable and replicable community financial literacy models applicable to similar semi-periurban contexts.

Abstract

Creative product innovation is vital for empowering local economies and improving MSME competitiveness, especially in rural areas. This community service in Pematang Johar Village aimed to strengthen creativity, innovation, and digital marketing among 42 participants, including MSME owners, youth, and women entrepreneurs. Through workshops and mentoring based on Service-Learning and Participatory Action Research (PAR), participants improved by over 50% in product design, packaging, and digital promotion. They created culturally inspired prototypes and formed the Pematang Johar Creative MSME Forum to ensure continued collaboration. Abstract

Community service activities aim to improve understanding, skills, and confidence in utilizing digital technology and managing business finances effectively. Empowerment activities aim to create independent, resilient, innovative, and sustainable women entrepreneurs, so that they can have a positive impact on family welfare and the broader village economy. In Pematang Johar Village, weak digital literacy and poor financial management have caused many village women's businesses to stagnate, even at risk of stopping midway. Through intensive training and mentoring provided, the implementation team introduced and trained digital marketing and financial management according to the needs of the Village. The implementation methods included observation, digital marketing training, business financial management training, mentoring, and program evaluation. The results of the activities showed a significant increase in the understanding of digital marketing and business financial management. The activities are expected to improve product promotion and more organized financial management for women in Pematang Johar Village. Integrated empowerment is important to support sustainable businesses.

Abstract

Pematang Johar Village is one of the agricultural villages with abundant rice production. However, a portion of the harvest results in low-quality rice such as broken grains, dull color, and leftover rice from daily consumption. This problem leads to economic inefficiency and increased food waste. Through this community service program, a new value chain innovation was introduced by processing rice waste into rice crackers. This innovation was chosen because of easily available raw materials, cultural consumption habits, and its potential to reduce food waste while creating local culinary identity. The production process is simple, low-cost, and offers wide marketing opportunities both online and offline. The program results show an increase in community knowledge and skills, establishment of a small business group, and the birth of a new culinary identity for Pematang Johar Village.

Abstract

This community service and research project aims to enhance the digital capabilities of the Pematang Johar Rice Field Tourism Village community through strengthened branding and digital marketing. The activity was motivated by the significant decline in tourist visits during the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the need for more adaptive promotional strategies. The study employed a descriptive-participatory approach consisting of observation, socialization, training, and mentoring activities. A total of 60 participants were involved in training sessions covering visual content production, social media management, Google Maps optimization, and village website development. Pre-test results indicated low levels of digital literacy (40/100), while post-test scores increased sharply to 90/100 after the mentoring sessions. Beyond technical improvements, the program also led to social transformation, including the formation of a village digital team, increased collaboration among MSMEs, and the establishment of a new branding identity: “Pematang Johar – Rice Field Tourism on the Outskirts of Medan City.” The outcomes demonstrate that digital marketing is an effective strategy for promoting tourist villages and supporting sustainable local economic growth.
