Abstract

Achieving optimal commodity diversification returns requires reference to the most profitable commodity types. Not all types of annual crops are suitable for development. Lebak swamp land is one of the lands that can be utilised for the development of horticultural commodities. The amount of authority in implementing regional policies has both positive and negative impacts on agricultural development. Most local regulations are made with the aim of increasing local government revenues. With planning, an estimate (forecasting) is made of the potential, prospects, obstacles and risks faced. The aim is to provide an opportunity to select the best alternatives and choose the best combination. Location Quotient (LQ) analysis is used to determine comparatively base or non-base activities in an area. Based on the results of the LQ analysis in Banyuasin Regency, it is known that long beans are the base in 11 sub-districts followed by chillies as the base commodity in 9 sub-districts, watermelon is the base in 8 sub-districts, and eggplant is the base in 7 sub-districts. Curly Chillies and Cucumbers are the base in 5 sub-districts followed by Tomatoes which are the base of horticultural production in 4 sub-districts in Banyuasin Regency. The development of horticultural commodities needs to consider chilli as a priority commodity to review Banyuasin Regency is one of the areas included in the Save the Swamp to Improve the Farmers (SERASI) programme in South Sumatra. The development of horticultural commodities in Banyuasin Regency must be supported through capital formation, new innovations, research and development, and improvement of human resources and infrastructure.

Abstract

The land conversion of rice farming could only be prevented by increasing farming competitiveness. The first step is to map the resource availability supporting paddy farming and income achievement. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze resource availability and income achievement to increase paddy business competitiveness. It used a survey method and observed two populations of farmers producing paddy seed and rice in Tanjung Lago and Rambutan Districts, Banyuasin Regency. Simple random sampling was adopted to determine 130 respondents from two populations, each with 65 rice and paddy seed farmers. The findings showed that resource availability supports farming in tidal land, though it is significantly higher for paddy seed than rice farmers. Regarding income achievements, paddy seed farmers also have higher R/C and B/C values than rice farmers. Income for rice farmers mainly comes from corn, rubber, and oil palm, while paddy seed farmers earn from their farming. This implies that the chance of land conversion into plantations and corn farming is greater for rice than for paddy seed farmers. When this happens on a large scale and in the long term, it impacts national rice production. Therefore, improved resource availability and better integration in production could sustainably increase paddy farming production in tidal land.

Abstract

Food consumption patterns are fundamental to human well-being, directly influencing health, productivity, and quality of life. This research examines the characteristics, welfare, and factors affecting household consumption patterns in Palembang City. This study uses primary data from an online survey of 72 deliberately selected respondents in Palembang City during November and December 2024. The data was analyzed using descriptive analysis and linear regression methods. The results showed that the people of Palembang City consume carbohydrates and protein as their primary daily food sources. Protein consumption, such as chicken meat and eggs, has met welfare standards. The variables influencing household protein consumption are Household Income (X1), Age (X3), Education (X4), Family Size (X5), and Gender of the Respondent (X6). Meanwhile, the variables affecting household rice consumption (Y2) are Household Income (X1), Family Size (X5), and Gender (X6). The variation in household consumption of protein and rice is significantly influenced by household income. The results of this study can provide information to the government to improve the welfare of the people of Palembang City.
