Abstract

Background: Low self-esteem is a significant issue that impacts psychological health. If not addressed promptly, low self-esteem can lead to persistent negative thoughts, potentially resulting in the loss of communication and functional abilities. Objective: To identify and train positive skills that are still present to support the enhancement of self-esteem in patients with schizophrenia. Method: A case study approach was used with nursing intervention involving positive skill training for patient Nn. MP. The intervention was implemented over a period of 9 days, with pre- and post-test measurements using the Self-Esteem Sorensen instrument to assess the outcomes of the intervention. Case Study Results: The case study revealed that pre- and post-test measurements using the Self-Esteem Sorensen instrument showed a decrease in scores related to agreement with negative statements, from 40 to 28. However, there was no change in the interpretation of the patient’s self-esteem, which remained very low. Conclusion: The patient was able to engage in the recommended positive activities according to the daily schedule, but the interpretation of the patient’s self-esteem remained very low. Nonetheless, there was a decrease in the score related to agreement with negative statements in the self-esteem questionnaire. Thus, the results of this case study can serve as a reference for future researchers to pay closer attention to the timing and stages of implementing strategies and to use interventions involving positive skill training that could improve self-esteem in patients with chronic low self-esteem schizophrenia. Abstract

Background. Schizophrenia has common symptoms, one of which is violent behaviour. The impact of violent behaviour makes patients unable to control themselves by hurting themselves and others and even damaging the environment. Interventions for schizophrenic patients at risk of violent behavior through collaborative interventions, namely Assertiveness Training therapy encourages patients to behave well by expressing their feelings and thoughts. Objective. To make patients at risk of violent behaviour more assertive by expressing their feelings and desires and meeting their needs. Methods. This writing uses a case study design, focusing on the Assertiveness Training collaboration intervention, which consisted of 4 intervention sessions conducted over 6 days and were repeated in 2 intervention sessions. The sample in this study amounted to 1 person, namely the patient Mrs AY in the Kabela Isolation room of the RSJ, Prof. Dr V.L. Ratumbuysang.  Results. There is a decrease in pre- and post-set scores, which proves that patients can act assertively. Conclusion. Patient Mrs AY's assertive behaviour increased, and several results related to the provision of assertiveness training therapy, which is used as a reference for educational purposes, prove that assertiveness training therapy has an influential success rate in reducing violent behaviour in patients.

Abstract

Preschool-aged children are vulnerable to sexual violence due to limited knowledge of sexual concepts, body autonomy, and personal boundaries. Early sex education is essential to strengthen children’s protective knowledge and help-seeking behaviors. In Indonesia, however, sex education for early childhood is often constrained by social taboos, limited teacher training, and insufficient instructional resources. Teachers play a central role in delivering age-appropriate sex education in schools, yet their perceptions and experiences remain underexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to explore kindergarten teachers' perceptions of sex education for preschool-aged children, including their understanding of sex education concepts, implementation challenges, and expectations for effective delivery. A qualitative study using a descriptive-phenomenological approach was conducted from August to September 2024 in Manado City. Purposive sampling was employed to recruit 15 kindergarten teachers as main informants and 7 preschool-aged children as supporting informants for data triangulation. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed thematically. Two main themes emerged: (1) sex education for preschool-aged children and (2) challenges and expectations of teachers in conducting sex education. Teachers generally understood sex education as teaching body autonomy, private body parts, gender identity, and safe versus unsafe touch. However, perceptions differed regarding the appropriate age to introduce sex education and whether girls should receive greater emphasis than boys. Children's growth, attention spans, training, and teaching medium were challenges. Teachers stressed interactive methods and engagement with parents, health workers, and government agencies. Early childhood sex education is heavily influenced by teachers' expertise, challenges, and expectations. Effective and sustainable early sex education requires teacher competency, age-appropriate resources, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.
