Abstract

This Community Partnership Program (PKM) aims to enhance the capacity of fisherwomen in Pantai Amal Village, Tarakan City, in processing fishery products into high-value economic commodities through educational-based training and outreach. The local community faces challenges in utilizing aquaculture products such as seaweed and milkfish, which are typically sold in raw form at low prices. This community service activity consists of several stages, including coordination with local leaders, collection of raw materials, dissemination of fish and seaweed nutritional information, and training in processing fishery products into seaweed dodol, amplang, and pempek. The results show that the training increased participants’ knowledge, skills, and creativity in diversifying fishery products. This service activity contributes to the development of educational science, particularly in community empowerment through nutritional literacy, household entrepreneurship, and contextual learning based on local potential. It is expected that this model of educational empowerment can be replicated in other coastal areas.

Abstract

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the most promising freshwater fish commodities with increasing demand for both local consumption and interregional distribution. This growing demand requires an efficient marketing system to ensure the sustainability of aquaculture and capture fisheries. The present study aims to comparatively analyze the marketing system of Nile tilapia between fish farmers and fishermen in Soppeng Regency. The research employed a survey method with a descriptive quantitative approach, involving 27 farmers, 35 fishermen, as well as collectors and retailers selected using snowball sampling. Data analysis covered marketing margins, marketing costs, and marketing efficiency using the marketing margin and farmer’s share formulas. The findings reveal two marketing channels: direct (producers–consumers) and indirect (producers– collectors–retailers–consumers). The highest marketing cost was recorded in fishermen channel II at IDR 3,249.44/kg, while the lowest was in farmers channel I at IDR 632.8/kg. Marketing margins were higher for fishermen (IDR 20,000/kg) compared to farmers (IDR 5,000/kg). Marketing efficiency values were <1, indicating that all channels are efficient, with the highest efficiency found in fishermen’s channels at 0.06%. These results suggest that shorter marketing channels improve efficiency, increase producers’ profitability, and strengthen the sustainability of the fishery sector.

Abstract

Small-scale fisheries in Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan, hold a strategic position in supporting Indonesia’s maritime border economy. Various stakeholders are involved in the management of small-scale fisheries in the island. The objective of this study is to analyze stakeholders engaged in small-scale fisheries in Bunyu Island, North Kalimantan, Indonesia. A survey method was employed, with data collection conducted from July to August 2025. Respondents were determined using a purposive sampling technique, comprising parties directly involved in small-scale fisheries on the island. The analysis employed stakeholder categorization, stakeholder analysis by influence-interest matrix, and actor linkage mapping to examine stakeholder positions and interactions. The findings indicate that 14 stakeholders are engaged in the management of fisheries in Bunyu Island. The Marine and Fisheries Office of North Kalimantan hold both high interest and influence due to its authority in fisheries management. Fishers, while having high interest, exhibit relatively low influence in the policy-making process. These findings highlight the presence of power asymmetry and predominantly top-down governance structure. Academic institutions play a role by providing research and recommendations to support fisheries management. To promote collaborative governance, the Provincial Marine and Fisheries Office should institutionalize fisher participation in decision-making forums.

Abstract

Traditional smoked fish enterprises play an important role in supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities. However, the highly perishable nature of fish products poses significant challenges to the supply chain, including uncertainty in raw material availability, limited coordination among supply chain actors, and distribution risks. This study aimed to analyse the Food Supply Chain Network (FSCN) of traditional smoked fish enterprises in Bone Regency, Indonesia, by examining the network structure, supply chain management, business processes, resources, product, information, and financial flows, as well as identifying key bottlenecks and supply chain risks. A descriptive research approach was employed through field observations and interviews with 38 traditional smoked fish producers selected using the census method as the primary respondents. The analysis was further supported by information obtained from other supply chain actors to provide a comprehensive FSCN assessment. The results revealed that the smoked fish supply chain consists of five main actors: fishers, raw material suppliers, smoked fish producers, retailers, and end consumers, supported by secondary actors providing production facilities and supporting services. Smoked fish producers serve as the central actors by transforming fresh fish into value-added smoked fish products. Product flows move from fishers and suppliers to producers and subsequently to retailers and end consumers. Information flows occur bidirectionally among supply chain actors, while financial flows move upstream from consumers through predominantly cash-based transactions founded on mutual trust. The business processes encompass raw material procurement, production, inventory replenishment, and customer order fulfilment. FSCN analysis identified raw material supply as the primary key bottleneck, primarily due to dependence on capture fisheries, where seasonal variation and adverse weather conditions disrupt the continuity of fresh fish supply. This bottleneck is further exacerbated by limited processing technology and quality deterioration during product distribution. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening raw material supply continuity, enhancing coordination among supply chain actors, and improving institutional integration to increase the resilience and sustainability of the traditional smoked fish supply chain in Bone Regency
