Abstract

This study aims to improve the language ability of foreign learners through the use of puzzle media in BIPA learning in Matthayom 2 class at Sangprathif Wittaya School, Thailand. In this study, the language ability referred to in the title refer to the reading skill component. The research method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was implemented in two cycles through the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects consisted of 15 BIPA learners, with data collected through tests, observation, and documentation. The results of the study showed a significant increase in reading skills, especially in the aspects of word recognition accuracy, understanding of meaning, and spelling and sound relationships. The average score increased from 60 (pre-action) to 74 (cycle I) and 87 (cycle II). The percentage of learners with the very good category increased from 0% in the pre-action to 20% in cycle I and 33% in cycle II. Thus, the use of puzzle media has proven effective in improving the language ability of foreign learners in BIPA learning, especially in the aspect of reading skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh kebutuhan media pemelajaran inovatif yang dapat membantu pemelajar Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) level dasar dalam meningkatkan keterampilan menulis. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan media Treasure map berbasis plurilingual yang memadukan unsur visual, budaya, dan permainan untuk memfasilitasi proses pemelajaran menulis secara kontekstual dan menyenangkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Research and Development (R&D) dengan model Borg and Gall yang dimodifikasi menjadi tujuh langkah, yaitu potensi dan masalah, pengumpulan data, desain produk, validasi desain, revisi desain, uji coba produk, dan revisi akhir. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Universitas Negeri Surabaya dengan subjek 9 pemelajar BIPA level dasar (A1) dari berbagai negara. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, angket validasi, observasi, dan tes tulis dengan instrumen berupa lembar validasi, angket respons, dan tes menulis. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa media Treasure map berbasis plurilingual memperoleh nilai kevalidan 84% dari ahli bahasa dan 90% dari ahli media (kategori sangat valid), keefektifan sebesar 84,5% (kategori efektif), dan kepraktisan 91% (kategori sangat praktis). Dengan demikian, media ini layak digunakan sebagai alternatif pemelajaran menulis bagi pemelajar BIPA level dasar karena mampu meningkatkan motivasi, partisipasi, serta kemampuan menulis kalimat dan paragraf sederhana. Penelitian ini menyarankan pengembangan lanjutan berbasis digital agar media lebih interaktif dan mudah diakses.

Abstract

The current Indonesian Language Program for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) plays a crucial role in advancing Indonesia by increasing the interest of other countries in learning Indonesian culture and language. The scarcity of available listening skill teaching materials for educational purposes poses a challenge to the teaching and learning process of Indonesian culture and language. This research aims to develop teaching materials for listening to Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) based on the Millealab Virtual Reality application. The research method employed is Research and Development (R&D) using the Borg and Gall model. Of the ten steps, this study adopts only five: (1) potential and problems, (2) data collection, (3) product design, (4) design validation, and (5) design revision. The research instruments include observation activities, questionnaires, interview guides, and expert validation sheets to obtain the desired data. The teaching materials developed in this study are prototypes of BIPA listening teaching materials based on Millealab Virtual Reality. The research output, a prototype of Millealab Virtual Reality-based BIPA listening teaching materials, has been validated by experts, indicating that the developed Millealab Virtual Reality-based listening teaching materials are feasible for use.

Abstract

Indonesia's economic and political development has sparked global interest, contributing to the increasing status of Indonesian as an international language. This has led to a growing number of learners in the BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers) program. While many studies have focused on learning materials, media, models, and evaluation tools, research on foreign language anxiety in the BIPA context remains limited. This study investigates the effectiveness of cooperative strategies in reducing language anxiety and improving speaking skills among BIPA Level 1 students. Using a quantitative Single Subject Research (SSR) method with an A-B-A design, the study involved three purposively selected students at the UPI Language Center. Results indicated that the implementation of cooperative strategies effectively reduced anxiety and enhanced speaking performance. Subject 1 showed an increase from a baseline (A1) average of 57.5 to 82.3 during intervention and 86.5 in the second baseline (A2). Subject 2 improved from 71.5 (A1) to 77 (intervention) and 78.5 (A2). Subject 3's scores rose from 59.5 (A1) to 65.6 (intervention) and 74 (A2). These findings suggest that cooperative strategies are a promising approach to addressing language anxiety and improving speaking skills in BIPA learners.

Abstract

In 2019, there were 63.022 learners of Indonesian as a foreign language in Victorian schools, Australia. They were facilitated by 263 Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) local teachers. Due to a shortage of BIPA local teachers, the Department of Education and Training Victoria had recruited language assistants from Indonesia. This study is aimed to describe the required skillsets of BIPA language assistants to support their duties. The data were collected through interviews, an inventory, observations, and stories of eight Indonesian language assistants with one year of experience. The findings reveal that the language assistants need to develop bicultural, personality and pedagogical competences. These competences should become the reference for developing workshop materials for future BIPA language assistants.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk, fungsi, dan efektivitas penggunaan media berbasis budaya dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) serta membandingkannya dengan pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia reguler. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kepustakaan (library research) dengan menganalisis sepuluh artikel ilmiah yang terbit pada periode 2020–2025. Data diperoleh melalui penelusuran jurnal nasional dan internasional dengan menggunakan kata kunci media pembelajaran BIPA, budaya lokal, dan pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia untuk penutur asing. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan media berbasis budaya seperti cerita rakyat, gamelan, wayang, kuliner tradisional, angklung, serta kesenian daerah lainnya mampu meningkatkan motivasi, keterlibatan emosional, dan kompetensi interkultural pembelajar asing. Media berbasis budaya tidak hanya berperan sebagai alat bantu belajar, tetapi juga sebagai sarana diplomasi budaya yang memperkenalkan nilai-nilai lokal Indonesia secara kontekstual dan menarik. Dibandingkan dengan pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia reguler yang cenderung fokus pada aspek linguistik dan akademis, pendekatan BIPA berbasis budaya menekankan pengalaman komunikatif yang autentik dan kontekstual. Implikasi penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengintegrasian media berbasis budaya dapat dijadikan dasar pengembangan kurikulum, desain materi ajar, serta pelatihan pengajar BIPA agar lebih adaptif terhadap kebutuhan pembelajar asing. Selain itu, strategi ini berpotensi memperkuat citra positif Indonesia melalui diplomasi budaya di kancah global.

Abstract

This study This study aims to develop Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) teaching materials based on Bangka Belitung culture to prepare students of English Language Education (TBI) at IAIN Syaikh Abdurrahman Siddik Bangka Belitung as prospective BIPA teachers. The research employs a qualitative descriptive design with a research and development orientation. Data were collected through a needs analysis using questionnaires and interviews with fourth-semester TBI students and lecturers, as well as document analysis of existing BIPA syllabi and teaching materials. The needs analysis examined students’ language skills, language components, learning motivation, teaching styles, classroom management abilities, and familiarity with instructional strategies. Based on the findings, culture-based BIPA teaching materials were designed by integrating Bangka Belitung cultural content into listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Local cultural elements, including traditions, social practices, and regional values, were embedded to enhance communicative competence and intercultural awareness. To ensure the quality of the developed materials, content validity, design validity, and construct validity were applied through expert judgment and revision processes. The results indicate that the Bangka Belitung culture-based BIPA teaching materials are pedagogically appropriate, culturally relevant, and feasible for classroom implementation. This study concludes that integrating local culture into BIPA teaching materials not only supports effective Indonesian language learning for foreign speakers but also contributes to the internationalization of the Indonesian language and the preservation of regional cultural identity

Abstract

Pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) telah mengalami pertumbuhan signifikan seiring dengan peningkatan minat peserta dari berbagai negara. Lagu tradisional berfungsi sebagai alat yang efisien untuk menggabungkan pengajaran bahasa dan budaya. Namun, implementasinya dihadapkan pada sejumlah hambatan yang membuat pemanfaatannya belum sepenuhnya optimal. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menguraikan tantangan penggunaan lagu daerah sebagai sarana pendidikan untuk menjadi landasan evaluasi dan perbaikan di masa mendatang. Temuan penelitian mengidentifikasi tiga hambatan utama dalam penerapan lagu tradisional sebagai media pembelajaran BIPA, yaitu: variasi latar belakang budaya peserta, keterbatasan sumber daya dan materi ajar BIPA yang disesuaikan dengan tingkat kemampuan bahasa dan konteks budaya, serta keterbatasan fasilitas seperti audio-visual dan teknologi. Fokus kajian ini berbeda dari penelitian sebelumnya yang lebih menekankan efektivitas penggunaannya, sehingga memberikan kontribusi penting sebagai dasar untuk pengembangan strategi dan solusi. Temuan ini diharapkan menjadi panduan bagi pendidik dan pengembang materi ajar untuk memaksimalkan potensi lagu tradisional sebagai sarana pendidikan yang efektif dan kontekstual.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pola struktur kalimat tunggal dan kategori pengisi fungsi predikat pada tulisan mahasiswa BIPA tingkat pemula di Universitas Trunojoyo Madura. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan sumber data berupa hasil analisis tulisan mahasiswa yang dikumpulkan melalui LKPD BIPA berbasis QR Code. Data dianalisis berdasarkan teori mengenai pola fungsi atau susunan unsur sintaksis dan teori tentang kategori pengisi fungsi predikat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pola kalimat yang paling dominan digunakan oleh mahasiswa adalah pola S–P dan S–P–K. Dominasi pola ini mencerminkan kemampuan sintaktis mahasiswa BIPA yang masih berfokus pada konstruksi kalimat sederhana sesuai dengan tingkat kemahiran A1–A2. Sementara itu, kategori pengisi fungsi predikat yang paling sering digunakan adalah verba, diikuti oleh nominal, numeralia, dan frasa preposisional. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa BIPA tingkat pemula lebih mudah mengungkapkan tindakan atau aktivitas konkret daripada bentuk deskriptif atau konseptual. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi bagi pengembangan materi ajar BIPA yang menekankan latihan struktur kalimat sederhana sesuai tingkat kemahiran pembelajar.

Abstract

Purpose of the Study: This study explores the implementation of differentiated instruction in teaching Bahasa Indonesia to foreign speakers, focusing on how adaptive teaching strategies address linguistic and cultural barriers while enhancing learners' communicative competence. Differentiated instruction allows educators to modify content, processes, and assessments based on students’ varying proficiency levels, learning preferences, and cultural contexts creating an inclusive and engaging language-learning environment. Methodology: A qualitative case study approach was employed to provide an in-depth understanding of instructional practices. The participants were 20 foreign students (8 males and 12 females) from diverse countries enrolled in a Bahasa Indonesia course at the State University of Surabaya. Data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns in instructional adaptation, learner engagement, and classroom implementation challenges. Main Findings: The results demonstrated that differentiated instruction significantly improved students’ language acquisition, participation, and motivation. Learners benefited from varied learning activities, technology-enhanced tools, and flexible assessment approaches that accommodated different linguistic abilities and cultural backgrounds. Nevertheless, the study identified challenges in lesson preparation time and teachers’ capacity to maintain instructional consistency. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This research offers one of the first comprehensive examinations of differentiated instruction in the context of Bahasa Indonesia as a foreign language. It offers a culturally responsive pedagogical model that bridges linguistic diversity with inclusive education principles, providing theoretical and practical guidance for educators seeking to enhance equitable, learner-centered language teaching practices in multicultural classrooms.
