Abstract

Wax is one of the compounds that can be misused to be added to Gorengan, Indonesian fritter, to keep them crispy. Gorengan containing wax is difficult to identify visually, so a quick and easy method of detecting wax content is required. The purpose of this research is to develop and evaluate the analytical performance of detecting wax content in gorengan using smartphone. Gorengan sample was dissolved with hexane and then added reagent that will give discoloration followed by analysis using smartphone. Some analysis performance parameters were evaluated in terms of linearity and detection limit, qualitative analysis capability, precision, and selectivity test. The developed method was also applied in some gorengan samples. The result shows that the detection of wax content in gorengan can be conducted by using reagent consisting of NaOH, Schift, and curcumin (1 : 2 : 2). Performance analysis shows that the linearity measurement at concentration between 10% and 25% has correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9537 with detection limit at concentration of 2% and precision (%RSD) less than 3%. The developed method can be applied for the detection of wax content in gorengan in the market.

Abstract

Co-Processed Excipient (CPE) is technological innovation for tablet preparation through the direct compression method with a quick and straight forward manufacturing process because it improves the compressibility and flowability. This research aimed to formulate and evaluate of chlorpheniramine maleate tablets using spray dried CPE as filler and binder. The spray dried CPE containing MCC PH 101, and Kollidon K30 was made into tablets through a direct compression method. Meanwhile, Ludipress and Avicel PH 102 were used as filler-binder comparators. All the prepared tablet formulations were then evaluated for weight variation, hardness, friability, disintegration time, content uniformity of active ingredient, and dissolution test. The physical properties of tablets with CPE as a filler and binder produced an average weight of 151.65 1.53 mg, 5.92 0.38 kg of hardness, 0.06 0.051% friability, 520.00 2.00 seconds of disintegration time, and 99.24 0.15% content uniformity of active ingredient. The comparators indicated better disintegration time than CPE (p0.05), while the dissolution test showed that more than 80% (Q) of the amount of active ingredient was dissolved in 30 minutes. CPE could be successfully used to prepare tablet dosage form, and the tablets had fulfilled the standards of pharmacopoeia.

Abstract

Abstract: Inappropriate use of antibiotics, both prescribed and non-prescribed, is a globalpublic health problem. In Indonesia, there is an increase of self-medication with antibiotics in thecommunity in the last decade. Health practitioners are the main source of information and adviceon self-medication with antibiotics in the community. Therefore, it is important to investigateknowledge of antibiotics among students of health sciences because they are candidates forfuture health practitioners. This study is an observational cross-sectional survey using avalidated questionnaire. Respondents were 150 students of health sciences faculties at GadjahMada University Yogyakarta who were selected using a non-random convenience samplingtechnique. Of the 150 respondents, 79%(119) were familiar with antibiotics. Only these data (n=119) were subsequently analysed. Overall, they had appropriate knowledge about efficacy ofantibiotics for bacterial infections and risks of antibiotic use, i.e. allergic reactions and antibioticresistance. However, their knowledge about efficacy of antibiotics for viral infections and the useof antibiotics immediately for fever were not appropriate. In general, 34% of respondents hadhigh level of knowledge about antibiotics, 54% in the moderate level and 12% in the low level. Keywords: knowledge of antibiotics, health sciences students

Abstract

An analytical method based on combination UV-Vis spectroscopy and chemometric was developed for detecting commonly listed adulterants such as paracetamol and piroxicam simultaneously in traditional medicines. No complex sample preparation and separation are required except grinding, dissolving, and filtering. The spectral interferences were resolved by multivariate techniques. Wavelengths selection and number of components optimization were performed by a combination of Genetic Algorithm and Partial Least Square (GA-PLS) followed by backward elimination through Jack-Knife Partial Least Square Regression (JK-PLSR). The capability PLSR model for quantitative analysis was assessed from the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square of error prediction/cross-validation (RMSEP/RMSECV) dan predicted residual sum of square (PRESS). Classification performance of PLS Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) was evaluated from the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROCC). For ensuring the sensitivity of the method, the detection limits from the two pseudo-univariate lines were estimated. The R2, RMSEP, RMSECV, AUROCC, and detection limit obtained from the selected models of paracetamol and piroxicam were 0.999, 0.25 mg/L, 0.15 mg/L, 100%, and 0.4 mg/L respectively. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for the rapid screening of adulterated herbal medicine.

Abstract

Liposomes are a delivery system used in pharmaceutical products and cosmetics. Liposomes have many advantages such as increase stability and efficacy, can be targeted to reduce toxicity and increase accumulation at the target site and are biocompatible. Preparation of liposomes can be done by conventional or new methods which are still being developed. Conventional methods often require a long time and organic solvents which may be toxic. Heating (Mozafari method) is one of the new methods developed in the manufacture of liposomes without organic solvents. Mixing temperature can affect the physical properties of liposomes. The particle size has become one of the important physical properties because it affects the absorption of the drug. Sonication is an easy method of choice in reducing the size of liposomes. Optimization of mixing temperature and duration of sonication in liposomes preparation using new heating methods and sonication were performed by factorial design with 2 factors and 3-levels to obtain optimal liposome size. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA. The results showed that both mixing temperature and sonication duration significantly affect liposome size, but the interaction was not statistically significant. Data analysis also showed that mixing temperature, sonication, and their interaction do not affect the polydispersity index of liposome. Results showed the optimum mixing temperature and sonication duration that can produce liposomes with size below 100 nm is at 60C for 30 minutes.

Abstract

Oral fingolimod has been recently accepted as a treatment for relapsing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration. The number of MS patients is increasing in Indonesia. There is a critical need of systematically reviewing the new medication for both efficacy and safety. This review aimed to appraise the clinical evidences of oral fingolimod for the effective treatment of relapsing MS. We searched in Pubmed database. We limited our search to only articles that were in full text, published within the last 10 years, and in English. We used the Jadad scale to measure the quality of the evidences. We only found 3 trials, all conducted with randomized and double blind design. The three trials were: the FREEDOMS I, FREEDOMS II, and TRANSFORMS studies. The FREEDOMS studies compared with placebo, and the TRANSFORMS study compared with injectable interferon. All of the studies have good quality in methodology (Jadad scale 3). The results of the three studies showed the benefit of oral fingolimod in reducing MS relapse compared with placebo with relative risk reduction range from 48% to 54%, and also in reducing new lesions in T2 brain MRI with relative risk reduction range from 35% to 74%. Our critical appraisal found that oral fingolimod improved clinical outcomes. The availability of oral fingolimod in Indonesia makes it one of the options in treatment of MS relapse in Indonesia and has been demonstrated to be effective and safe with relatively small risk.

Abstract

Abstract : Research presented in this article investigated health seeking behavior among peoplein an urban area of Yogyakarta City Indonesia. The research was a cross-sectional surveyinvolved adults in Yogyakarta City who were selected using a cluster random samplingtechnique. Sample size was 640 respondents. Data were collected using a pre-testedquestionnaire during March to May 2010. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chisquare tests, and Logistic regression. A total of 559 questionnaires were completed, resulted in90% of response rate. Mostly respondents stated that they had one to three medical complaintswithin a month (51% of 559). The most popular health seeking behavioris a combination betweenself-care and consultation to health care providers (41%). Other options are self-care (36%),consultation to public health care centre (16%), and consultation to private health care (5%).Among the socio-demographic and economic characteristics, marital status is the only factorthat significantly correlated with health seeking behavior. Based on the results it can berecommended that programs for improving health behavior should consider self-care, includingno medication and self medication with modern and herbal/traditional medicines. The role offamily members (e.g. spouse) should also be considered as an important factor of health relatedbehavior. Keywords : Health seeking behavior
