Abstract

E-learning is mostly acknowledged as a type of learning that is facilitated by electronic media typically connected to the internet. It has been continuously promoted as an alternative to adult learners enrolled in higher education, especially during the pandemic outbreak. Upon its implementation, many consider the electronic learning option benefits them, while others argue it raises inconveniences. These opposing views certainly stimulate associated lecturers and learners in English language teaching and learning to give different responses as well. Thus, the exploration of their perceptions towards e-learning implementation is highlighted in this article through a case study carried out at one of the private universities in South Sumatera. The participants were two lecturers and ten students from two different courses. Open-ended questionnaires and interviews were conducted to obtain the data and analysed using thematic analysis. A member checking was done to measure the credibility and control of biases in this study. The findings recapitulate that e-learning was implemented to facilitate three main activities, namely administrative task fulfilment, teaching-learning process, and teaching-learning preparation. Besides, the perceptions from all participants showed that online learning classes generated some benefits and drawbacks.

Abstract

The comprehension of overarching principles in texts for elementary and junior high school is deficient. The objective of this study is to create an instructional plan for understanding the notion of square and rectangular regions using GeoGebra as a tool. This study employs a didactical design research methodology with a descriptive-qualitative approach. The didactic design discussed in this study pertains to the acquisition of knowledge regarding square and rectangular regions in junior high school. The study was carried out in a public junior high school located in Sungai Raya Kubu Raya. The data sources consist of primary and secondary data. Primary data is collected firsthand from sources in the field, directly from the research subject. The data is derived from test results and observations of eighth-grade students and mathematics teachers, which serve as the foundation for the development of didactical design. The secondary data consists of a literature review, which is derived from relevant literature sources that provide support or relevance to this publication, such as earlier research. The findings revealed that students had difficulties mostly in identifying flat shapes, calculating the area of squares and rectangles, understanding the correlation between square and rectangular areas, and utilising the notion of square and rectangular areas to solve problems. This learning impediment is surmounted by implementing a didactic design. The resulting didactic design incorporates the utilisation of GeoGebra software to address and overcome students' learning hurdles in the context of square and rectangular materials, with a focus on problem-solving.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of the Dilemmas approach, rooted in transformative learning, on enhancing critical thinking skills in buffer chemistry subjects among high school students. Employing a mixed-methods design and purposive sampling, the research involved 34 eleventh-grade students from SMAN 1 Surakarta. The implementation of dilemma stories integrated with a 5E learning cycle was scrutinized using various data collection methods, including observations, student reflective journals, pretest-posttest assessments, the Constructivist Chemistry Values Learning Environment Survey (CCVLES), and interviews. Observations assessed the application of the dilemma stories and the 5E learning cycle. Pretest-posttest evaluations measured changes in students' critical thinking abilities, while reflective journals and CCVLES questionnaires captured students' perceptions of their critical thinking skills and their learning experiences. Interviews were conducted to validate the findings from the tests, journals, and questionnaires. Data analysis involved reduction, display, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The findings suggest that the Dilemmas approach significantly fosters students' ability to think critically and apply chemical concepts practically. This was evidenced by students' analyses of dilemma stories and responses in interviews, CCVLES questionnaires, and reflective journals, indicating a deeper engagement with and understanding of the subject matter through this innovative learning strategy.
