Abstract

Heavy metal pollutants contained in wastewater can cause health problems for living things around. Minor to fatal health problems can occur due to heavy metal poisoning, mainly caused by Pb(II) metal.. This study aimed to determine the optimum mass combination of rice husk and zeolite to adsorb Pb(II) metal ions in simulated wastewater, and to determine the sensitivity of the analysis method. This study used Solid Phase Spectrophotometry (SPS) to determine the decrease in Pb(II) metal ion levels after being adsorbed by activated carbon from rice husks and zeolites. This study used an experimental method with simulated wastewater samples containing Pb(II) at several concentrations. Pb(II) adsorption processes by rice husk and natural zeolite used various adsorbents' mass ratios. The adsorbents were characterized by using Fourier-Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) Spectrophotometry. Pb(II) analysis during adsorption processes used a single beam UV-visible Spectrophotometer for Solid-Phase Spectrophotometry. This study indicates that the combination of adsorbent from rice husk and natural zeolite can properly adsorb Pb(II) ions with an adsorption capacity of 0.75 μg g-1 and 0.025 μg L-1 for the LoD of the instrument.

Abstract

The study of exhaust H2S and NO2 gases using activated carbon has been conducted. In this study, activated carbon was prepared from mendong plant (Frimbistylis umbellaris), which was activated using zinc chloride (ZnCl2) with concentrations of 2.5; 5; 7.5; and 10 % w/v to determine the efficiency of H2S adsorption. Mendong charcoal was obtained from the process of using a modified tool. Activation was done by maceration using ZnCl2 activator (w/v) for 24 hours. The adsorption of H2S and NO2 was analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Determinations of H2S gas carried out using the blue methylene’s method for 1 hour showed the highest effectiveness of mendong activated carbon was of that at the concentration of 2.5 % ZnCl2 w/v with 80% of H2S removal. Further, the mendong activated carbon with the concentration of 2.5% ZnCl2 w/v was used for NO2 adsorption. The adsorption of NO2 gas was conducted for 1 hour using Griess Saltzman’s method. The result showed that the largest concentration of NO2 gas was adsorbed when the HNO3 concentration was 1.5 M (0.057 µg/mL). The percentage of NO2 efficiency adsorbed was at 28%.

Abstract

MODEL PROBLEM SOLVING DAN MODEL PROBLEM POSING DILENGKAPI MULTI REPRESENTASI TETRAHEDRAL KIMIA DALAM MENINGKATKAN PEMAHAMAN KONSEP SISWA AbstractA learning model has its characteristics with advantages and disadvantages. A Teacher has a particular way of delivering chemistry materials. This study aims to investigate the implementation of Thinking Aloud Pair Problem Solving (TAPPS) and Problem Posing (PP) to enhance students' conceptual understanding of the topic of the mole concept. The learning model implemented was enriched with the tetrahedral chemistry representation, which included levels of the human element, macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic. This research used a quasi-experimental method with a randomized pretest-posttest comparison group research design. Data collection used paper-and-pencil tests to sixty-four grade 10 students in a public high school in Sragen, Indonesia. Data analysis employed an independent sample t-test. The research findings indicated that the PP model was able to generate a higher degree of students' conceptual understanding than the TAPPS model and have more students with sound conceptual understanding than the TAPPS model. The chemistry teaching integrated with the tetrahedral chemistry representation increased students' sub-microscopic and symbolic levels of understanding. The new approach should be embedded in every chemistry learning model for enhancing students' understanding.AbstrakSebuah model pembelajaran mempunyai ciri tersendiri dengan kelebihan dan kekurangannya. Abstract

Critical thinking skills are important competencies that need to be developed in chemistry learning. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the guided discovery-based thermochemistry module in developing critical thinking skills based on gender differences. The subject of this research was 76 females and 20 males of class XI Mathematics and Nature Science from three high schools in Ponorogo, Indonesia. This study used one school for each category, namely high, medium, and low. The research method used a quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest. The data analysis technique used T-test with SPSS 21 software. The result showed that the average increase in student scores or normality gain score (n-gain) was 0.5050 to 0.6362, which means students' critical thinking skills improved after the implementation of guided discovery-based thermochemistry modules. T-test result in high category schools obtained T count > T table (2.142> 2.032), which showed that there are significant differences between the critical thinking skills of female and male students. Meanwhile, T count and T table in medium category school were 1.353 and 2.034, respectively. T count and T table in low category school respectively 1.106 and 2.068. Analysis of T-test results in medium and low school categories can be written -T table < T count < T table, is means there is no significant differences between the critical thinking skills of female and male students. Thus, guided discovery-based thermochemistry modules are effectively applied to high, medium and low school categories.

Abstract

21st-century learning presents chemistry teachers with new challenges in teaching abstract chemistry concepts with various technologies that continue to develop. One of the media that can visualize abstract chemical concepts is Augmented Reality (AR). AR media developed in chemistry learning needs to be valid so that it can be used properly. Therefore, this study aims to examine the validity of the Android-based AR media developed. Four education practitioners carried out the validation as experts, and 13 students participated as respondents. The instrument used is a questionnaire with a Likert scale. The data obtained were analyzed quantitatively with the Rasch model using the facet software. The results of the analysis show that the Exact Agreements are 41.10%, and the Expected Agreements are 42.20%. The most challenging aspect to achieve is media design, while profit is the most easily agreed-upon aspect. Based on this assessment, in the development of augmented reality media, it is necessary to pay attention to display aspects and 3D objects suitable for viewing a material so that it is easier for users to understand the material.

Abstract

Interference of iron, aluminum and silicon on the determination of mangan in laterite mineral by atomic absorption spectrometry has been investigated. Dissolution of laterite mineral into solution have been carried out by wet method destruction using combination of 7 mL of aquaregia, 7.5 mL of concentrated perchloric acid and 9 mL of fluoride acid 48% In sealed teflon flask heated at temperature of about 110 °C for 3 hours to determine the content of Mn element in laterite mineral directly. Interference of these three metals were carried out by evaluating the differences of Mn absorbance at wavelength 279.50 nm and slit width 0.2 nm between the solutions containing mangan only and those containing the some amount of mangan together with the interfering elements at those concentration range in laterite mineral. The result showed that both iron at concentration of 100 ppm until 500 ppm and aluminum at concentration at 3 ppm until 15 ppm caused significant and non-linear interference on the determination of Mn 2 ppm. Interference of iron was effectively eliminated by releasing action of aluminum. The signal depression reductional decrease due to 234 ppm of silicon on the determination of Mn 2 ppm can be eliminated by adding 2.30 mL of CaCl2 0.2% (m/v) into these solution. The content of Mn in the laterite mineral after and before adding of CaCl2 into solution were 2407.04 ± 59.26 μg g-1 and 2311.76 ± 23.61 μg g-1, respectively. This result was significantly different at confidence level 95% as shown by the value of tcalculated=4.91 that was higher than ttable=4.30.
