Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted various aspects of life. Beyond the health sector, the pandemic has also caused significant economic downturns. This study aims to examine the struggles of poor families during the pandemic as represented in the film “Happy Girls Don’t Cry”. This research employs a qualitative method with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This approach is used to interpret the hidden meanings behind signs. It was found three scenes that represent the struggles of poor families. First, loan sharks as a practical solution in facing economic difficulties. Second, the commodification of poverty on social media. Third, selling valuable items to survive. The film represented the struggles of the lower-class society to survive during the pandemic.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores how Indonesia’s policy toward cross-border e-commerce platforms, particularly the rejection of TEMU from China, reflects the state's effort to renegotiate economic sovereignty amid the wave of digital globalization. Drawing on the theory of neo-mercantilism, the research argues that regulatory measures such as Trade Regulation No. 31 of 2023 serve as selective protection strategies to sustain domestic MSMEs and prevent market domination by foreign actors employing predatory pricing and cross-border trade. TEMU’s direct-to-consumer model and hybrid distribution channels bypass local value chains and create competitive distortions. The findings indicate that developing countries like Indonesia are not entirely passive under global economic pressure but instead actively shape regulatory space to enhance national competitiveness. The study concludes that Indonesia’s digital protectionism is not a form of anti-globalization, but a state strategy to address structural imbalances in global trade and assert digital economic sovereignty,

Abstract

This study aims to examine the integrated marketing communication strategy employed by Kedai Pempek Salisah in introducing pempek—a traditional Palembang dish—in Blitar, a city with a distinct cultural background. Drawing on perception theory and integrated marketing communication, and using a descriptive qualitative approach within a constructivist paradigm, the study finds that Salisah's success lies in preserving the cultural identity of pempek while adapting to local tastes. Consistent communication strategies through social media, word of mouth, taste adjustments, and relatable promotional language help build emotional connections with consumers. The study concludes that effective intercultural communication in culinary marketing requires a balance between cultural preservation and contextual adaptation.

Abstract
