Abstract

This paper presents a continuous improvement (CI) project based on the application of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology. This project was carried out at coffee manufacturing industry located in northern area of Malaysia. The focus of this presented CI project is to improve the weight inconsistency problem of coffee powder packaging. The presented CI project was mainly guided with Six Sigma methodology of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) steps, and related Lean tools applications. The step of Define summaries the overall view of CI project. In the step of Measure, current level of sigma based on defect per million of opportunities (DPMO) calculation was determined. Initially, 6% of rejected products were recorded, which it presents the sigma level at 3.1. In the step of Analyze, a series of team-based activities towards root cause identification was carried out. It included the applications of cause effect (CE) analysis and possible causes prioritization and close observations on packaging process. In the step of Improve, the related Lean tool was proposed to improve the problem under study. In the final step of Control, related supportive actions were suggested to sustain the effectiveness of the proposed solution. There are fourteen possible causes are initially identified in CE analysis and based on team’s evaluation process of possible causes prioritization four causes are collectively to be the most possible of root cause(s). Three close observation sessions were carried out to finalize the most possible root cause of the problem. Result strongly suggested that the high variation of coffee powder’s size and inconsistency is the root cause. An improvement strategy based on Lean Manufacturing approach called ‘poka yoke’ is proposed. The proposed improvement strategy was then validated based on real packaging process scenario. Result shows that the proposed improvement strategy is significantly effective to solve the problem with 0% of reject product was recorded so far, where it is not only produced the product within the acceptable weight of 215 and 208 grams, but also presents the reduction of weight fluctuation that close to ideal weight of 208 grams.

Abstract

This work presents the application of lean management principle in the area of waste elimination in a powder milk plant of a production company. The existing manufacturing procedure for the company’s plant was evaluated, and a lean manufacturing technique was developed for the plant. To achieve this, a time series analysis was carried out on the econometric data obtained, and a future forecast predicting losses and usage was predicted based on the practised manufacturing procedures. The econometric linear transfer function technique applied to the actual usage and actual loss data obtained filtered the waste in the production process and generated forecast values for actual loss and usage. This revealed that there had been poor manufacturing practices in the factory. The findings from this research can be used as a guide to managers on wastage control in a production system.

Abstract

After-sales service (ASS) is a product support activity provided to customers; after-sales service that focuses on quality can create a sustainable competitive advantage. This study aims to the ASS performance, analyze the causes of performance constraints that occur in ASS and recommendations for improving the performance of ASS conceptually. Service partner performance achievement can be assessed from four categories, i.e. very good, good, bad, and poor, based on the actual level of performance compared to performance targets. The sample of this research is 12 ASS partners in the electrical equipment industry in West Java and Jakarta. Factors causing failure were analyzed descriptively using the fault tree analysis (FTA) method, which involved experts in focus group discussions (FGD). Based on the evaluation, 25% of partners were rated good, 50% poor, and 25% very poor. Partner performance achievement is carried out on 22 performance indicators, of which 20 performance indicators have not achieved a good rating. These indicators relate to brand issues, warranty, training, parts control and stock management, pricing, and service systems, including service centers and service facilities. The proposed concept that becomes a recommendation for improving the performance of power tools ASS is improving the operating system and the selection of partners in the service center and service dealer categories with industrial customer segmentation.

Abstract

The quality of midsole products significantly impacts the quality, durability, and comfort of the users of shoe products manufactured by ABC company. The high percentage of the average number of product defects based on product yield data for 12 months is 3.1% which exceeds the average number of product defects required by the company by 2%. There are six types of defects in the midsole: yellowing, porous, bubbles, broken, over left material and trimming. Three types of midsole product defects from six types of defects are the focus of improvement based on the Pareto concept, the name of the type of defect is yellowing. Porous and over left material with a total defect percentage of 82.9%. This study aims to evaluate flaws in the midsole production process using a method that combines failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), fuzzy logic, and Pareto diagram analysis. FMEA is used in shoe manufacturing to identify failure modes, their causes, and their effects. In contrast, fuzzy logic methods for input factors, such as occurrence (O), severity (S), and detection (D), are used to obtain a fuzzy risk priority number (FRPN). The assessment using rule-based FRPN provides strong evidence that the proposed methodology is logically useful for prioritizing the value of the RPN.

Abstract

Crowdfunding is one of the alternative sources of finance for product-based startups. Products are funded if the campaign is considered to be successful in reaching the target. The assessment of the success rate of product campaigns develops into three successive levels, namely overfunding, successful and unsuccessful. Due to the complication of setting up a product campaign on an online crowdfunding platform, a mobile application to aid campaigners needs to be developed. Moreover, it is essential to evaluate its ease to use. This study aims to (1) develop an android-based application, (2) evaluate the usability of the application based on user perceptions. The application ('POSCA') was developed by emphasizing user experience (UX), while the Use Questionnaire evaluated its usability. Ten participants were invited to evaluate the system usability and interface. The results suggest that 'POSCA' has good scores of usability: ‘efficiency’ = 49.11% in the fifth trial, ‘very-easy-to-learn’ (95%), ‘useful’ (85%), ‘easy-to-use’ (87%), and ‘satisfy-the-users’ (88%).

Abstract

The current industrial development is related to increasing global action and public awareness of environmental issues with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It makes the implementation of green supply chain management on Green Supplier Evaluation and Selection (GSES) more appreciated because it can affect the company's environmental performance. Companies that can improve their environmental performance will be able to increase their competitive advantage and have an impact on increasing revenue, market share, and a more positive green image of the company. Currently, there is no research about green supplier selection in the furniture industry, especially in Indonesia. So, it is necessary to research the industry because it hugely affects environmental performance. One of the companies engaged in the furniture industry is X company. They are selecting their suppliers only based on the ownership of the environmental certification of each supplier and the quality of the raw materials. Environmental criteria such as the green image in the community and environmental competency have not been considered. On the one hand, X company also wants to realize its mission of environmental sensitivity. This study aims to select the best green supplier of mindi wood raw materials by integrating fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS because these methods can make practical multicriteria decisions and obtain more valid results. The results obtained indicate that the 8th green supplier has the highest preference value of 0.777 so it is called the best alternative for mindi wood raw materials.

Abstract

This study aims to implement the Six Sigma method on formal men's jacket products in the garment industry to increase the level of sigma. The methodology is based on the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC) approach. The new approach in this study is the determination of 5W+1H using a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with five expert judgments. The design of this study has applied the Six Sigma method at the Measure stage. It is a measurement before improvement and after the Control stage as a measurement after improvement. The results of this study have increased the level of sigma from 3.5765 to 3.7839, so there is an increase of 5.48%. Increasing the sigma level contributes to a decrease in defects at the finish line by 44.09% every month. Implementing the Six Sigma method to the DMAIC approach has succeeded in increasing the level of sigma, automatically reducing the percentage of defects and increasing the productivity of formal men's jackets in the garment industry.

Abstract

Total Sulfur Analyzer (TS Analyzer) is one of the machines in the laboratory to test the total sulfur content contained in coal samples. Technically, specifications and use are regulated by international standards. In 2020, the downtime of these tools was very high, causing the productivity of surveyors to decrease. Low productivity will have an impact on the company's losses. The productivity of this equipment and machines is crucial to maintaining the company's success in its business processes. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of the operational performance of the TS Analyzer machine in the laboratory, analyze the causative factors and make improvements. This research uses the integration method of Failure Mode And Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Based on the analysis of the causes of the problem, the low OEE value is caused by the high breakdown loss. Based on the FMEA analysis, it was found that the operator was wrong in operating the machine with RPN 343, electrical instability with RPN 343, unstable temperature with RPN 343 and improper thermocouple installation. The results showed that the OEE value of the TS Analyzer machine has increased after the improvement.
