Abstract

This article studies al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī’s viewpoints toward understanding hadith on his work “Nawādir al-Uṣūl fi Ma’rifat Aḥādīth al-Rasūl.” Using the content analysis approach, this study reveals that the primary purpose of transmitting hadith is that the hadith’s message is supposed to be practiced so that happiness in the hereafter can be achieved, not just transmitting hadith from one person to another without any practical implication. So, it not only orients on the chain of transmission but also profoundly understands the matan or its contents. He quotes some hadith in his works to expose the meaning and the essence contained in every hadith and hopes that it can be a guideline of sulūk for those who intend to get closer (taqarrub) to God. Hence, the Sufism viewpoint becomes his basic epistemology in understanding the hadith.Contribution: This article provides a new perspective of the hadith transmitter requirement according to al-Tirmidhī, namely, having a critical view towards everything that is heard and accepted. It also shows that understanding hadith is not just to reveal its meaning but a sulūk for those who want to get closer to Allah.

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to analyse the context of the analogies used by Ḥamzah Fanșūrī in teaching wujūdiyya doctrine in his work, Asrār al-‘Ārifīn. The importance of this study is to reveal how he easily taught complex metaphysical concepts in Sufism. He used objects easily recognised by the Malay community as analogies. This article is a literature study using an analytical-descriptive approach. This study found that the metaphors used by Ḥamzah Fanșūrī in teaching the relationship between singularity and plurality in ujūdiyya doctrine were clay and earthen vessels, sun and its light, wood and chess pieces, and sea and wave. In comparison, secondary analogies such as fruit, seeds, mirrors, people, rivers, stones, and iron were used to explain the various dimensions of wujūdiyya teachings. His approach is therefore easy to understand.Contribution: This article opens a new perspective in understanding Sufism, especially the wujūdiyya doctrine in Ḥamzah Fanșūrī’s teaching. The analogies used are easy to understand. The analogy proposed by Ḥamzah Fanșūrī can be used as a reference to reveal the metaphors used by other Sufis in teaching wujūdiyya.

Abstract

Sufism is widespread in Turkey, and most Turkish people sympathise with the Sufis even if they do not adhere to particular Sufi orders. Sufism has been rooted in Turkish society throughout history and has experienced ups and downs. This article is a literature study that used a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis. Data were collected from documents, literature, and journals. This study found that Sufism was not entirely swept up by secularisation, particularly in rural areas. Even in urban areas, many still adhere to Islamic traditions, including Sufism, passed down from generation to generation. Furthermore, Sufism influenced the political world in Turkey and the period preceding the Ottoman Empire's collapse. Even after that, a new pattern of Sufism emerged, namely Sufism without order, which resulted from understanding the Risale-i Nur, written by Said Nursi.  Contribution: This article is expected to explain the role of Sufism in Turkey during the classical period as an agent of moderate Islam propagation who built a spirit of struggle. This study shows that Sufism in Turkey has different understandings from others that distance themselves from political matters, social activities, and state affairs.

Abstract

The issue of human behaviours is still engaging to discuss as human behaviour constantly changes. This study aims to reveal the problem of the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud, which has been the primary reference in the discussion of modern psychology. Modern psychologists tend to neglect the role of religion due to secularization in various aspects of life. This paper is library-based research that employs a comparative-analysis method. This study reveals that personality studies in modern psychology disregard the role of God. Humans deny God's power outside themselves, leading to modern man's spiritual crisis. In addition, the psychoanalytic theory does not deal with the spiritual aspect, so this theory is no longer relevant as a solution to modern human personality problems. Third, the concept of tazkiyat an-nafs and insān kāmil in the Islamic tradition can guide human life amid a spiritual crisis and guide humans to return to their God.  Contribution: This article reveals that the most effective solution in dealing with modern humans' personality and spiritual crises is to return to the initial nature of humans as creatures of God who are always obedient to Him.

Abstract

Every human being looks for sa'āda (happiness) in this world. However, this paradigm has recently shifted. It is now emerging amid urban communities, especially among Indonesian Muslims searching for spiritual values. This qualitative study aims to answer the above argument using a sufistic approach by analysing human nature and the nature of happiness, which are the factors supporting the birth of urban sufism. Besides, it also uses a phenomenological approach to see urban sufism, especially in the cities of Jakarta and Bandung, as an example of the development of urban sufism. This study found that the paradigm shift was caused by the revival of human awareness that the spiritual aspect is a source of true happiness within human beings.Contribution: This article provides a rational reason to show that sufism is not only for certain circles but is universal and needed for every human being, especially for the conditions of this era. Every human needs sufism as it is a metaphysical human element consisting of Nūr Muḥammadiyy and Adamiyy

Abstract

Sufism is often understood as an approach to cleansing one's soul (tazkiyat al-nafs). Its infusion to human resource management is severely underutilised. This article aims to describe the managerial experience and services of a Sufism-based institution, namely the Faculty of Tarbiyya and Teacher Training UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri, Purwokerto. The faculty has implemented Sufism-based management to improve its employee performance in the industrial revolution 4.0. This paper is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Data are collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Twelve key informants comprising officials, lecturers, administrative staff, and students, were invited. The data were then analysed by employing Smith's model. The finding showed that spiritually clean and healthy officials could stimulate wiser organisational behaviour, stimulate bright ideas (innovations), and shape a stronger desire to follow up on problems. This Sufism-based management supports the improvement of the service quality of the institution internally, externally, and eternally.Contribution: This study contributes to the literature on Sufism-based management in the sense of providing practical implementation of takhallī, taḥallī, and tajallī in management

Abstract

Sufism has been trailed by different criticisms for a long period. Different Muslim communities across the Muslim world have experienced anti-Sufism drives but launched in Nigeria in the seventies as it was inaugurated and coordinated by Shaykh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, who acted under the guise and influence of Wahhābiyya-Salafiyya. As a result, Sufis across communities started responding by either preaching or writing. Sufi scholars in Ilorin, a border community between the North and South, were among the early responders to anti-Sufism who took to writing. Therefore, this paper is a critical analysis of the contents of Rafḍ al-Shubuhāt, written as a response to anti-Sufi waves in the city. An exegetical method of research was adopted to determine the appropriateness of the Sufi scholars to the anti-Sufism campaign in the metropolis. The findings revealed that most of the Salafiyya’s claims are unfounded and lack the proof to establish their genuineness, while the responses of the Sufi are not only appropriate but are also laced with evidence from the Qur’an, Ḥadīth, and submissions of different scholars, some of whom were Salafiyya scholars. The book is therefore recommended for the defence of Sufism in contemporary times.Contribution: This study contributes to revealing the efforts to tackle the anti-Sufism movement initiated by Sufis scholars in Ilorin Nigeria, by writing a book entitled Rafḍ al-Shubuhāt, as a counter-opinion.

Abstract

This article examines the contribution of Sufism to peace by studying the role of Shaykh Husamuddin Martin Mayer in the deradicalisation program in Germany. Shaykh Husam has a unique background as a convert (Muallaf), Sufi figure, anthropologist and peace activist. This study used a qualitative method in which the data were obtained through documentation studies and interviews. Data were analysed using the theory of the Sufism Peace Paradigm and the eight Stages of Psychosocial Development theory. This study revealed that Sufism correlates and could contribute positively to creating peace. This is evident in the profile of Shaykh Husam, a convert (muallaf) who then became a murshid of the Naqshbandi-Haqqani Order (NHO) and is active in the deradicalisation program in Germany. In his opinion, Sufism can function as a coping mechanism that is effective for today's social, political and religious challenges, including deradicalisation peace programs, such as peace-making, peace-building, and peace-keeping.Contribution: This study contributes to revealing the role of sufism in creating peace and a deradicalisation program initiated by Shaykh Husam in Germany.
