Abstract

This paper sheds light on Ibn Arabi’s philosophy of journey, which takes place in an empty space where mystical characters, noble saints, Prophets and Messengers of God are given a chance to communicate and interact peacefully. Considering the hermeneutics’ approach to Sufi discourse and Gilles Deleuze’s concept of nomad thought, we aim to showcase that Ibn Arabi regards the Sufi wayfarers as “nomadic subjects” as long as they can journey to the inward and outward realms. The intersection of these two antagonistic realms— the realm of Seen (al-hiss) and Unseen (al-ghayb)— liberates the Sufi practitioners from spatio-temporal stagnation and transfers them to endless states and multiple becomings that later evolve into spiritual stations (maqāmāt) of stability and certainty.  Contribution: This article highlights the breadth of Ibn Arabi’s nomadic style of thought in shaping the spiritual journey, arguing that the need to unite with God is expressed through a new style of spiritual movement that occurs in an imaginal space where the Sufi is enabled to communicate via his/her heart with other absentees, including noble saints, Messengers of God and Prophets

Abstract

This study aims to discover the process of determining the direction of the qibla by Sunan Kalijaga (one of Walisongo), employing a mystical and intuition (divine inspiration) method. This study is a qualitative field research using a socio-cultural approach. The research objects are the Baiturrahim Gambiran Pati Mosque and Demak Grand Mosque, Central Java. These mosques were built by Sunan Kalijaga. The results of this study revealed why the people of Gambiran Pati and Demak Grand Mosque still use the Sunan Kaljaga version of the qibla direction compared to the qibla direction using scientific technology. Some factors that influence include, first, the historical value factor of the Baiturrahim Mosque and Demak Grand Mosque as the guardian mosque and also the legendary figure of Sunan Kalijaga. Second, The socio-cultural characteristics of the Gambiran Pati and Demak communities are familiar with the mystical Kejawen.Contribution: This research contributes to understanding the method of determining the direction of the qibla by Sunan Kalijaga using mystical and intuitive approaches. It focuses on two historical mosques, the Baiturrahim Mosque in Gambiran Pati and the Grand Mosque of Demak, considering their historical, religious, and socio-cultural factors.

Abstract

This article discusses the impact of digital media on Sufi practices, specifically in the context of conducting ijāza (authorization) for wird dhikr rituals through digital platforms. Traditionally, Sufi practices such as the ijāza involve direct teaching from teacher to student. However, with the rapid development of digital media, the ijāza process has undergone significant changes. This study adopts an eclectic approach, which combines digital ethnography to study online participant engagement and a comprehensive literature review to track and measure the transformation of ijāza through digital media. Data were gathered from various sources, including books, scholarly journals, and relevant digital content related to the research topic. The findings show that the evolution of digital media has transformed the implementation of ijāza for wird dhikr from direct (traditional) to indirect transmission through online media, and it is considered valid. Yet, ijāza is not merely dealing with the process of authorization but also the transmission of blessings and spiritual knowledge from the teacher to the student, which needs close engagement and relationships that can only be achieved with direct interaction.Contribution: This article provides an understanding of the impact and validity of ijāza conducted through digital media compared to traditional methods yet considered valid.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the interpretation of Ibn 'Aṭāillāh, spread in his Sufism books. Apart from a historical approach, this library research applies a hermeneutic approach to understand the form of Ibn 'Aṭāillāh's Sufistic interpretation. The results reveal that Ibn ‘Aṭāillāh's tafsir product includes 630 verses from 89 surahs. The tafsir epistemology applied by Ibn 'Aṭāillāh uses a Sufism approach to reveal the wisdom of the Qur'an. His motivation is to provide guidance for the salik or spiritual travellers and position the Quran as a source of wisdom and the basis for the concept of Sufism. Ibn 'Aṭāillāh Sufistic interpretation complements other tafsir products and emphasises that the style of interpretation is determined by the approach used by the mufassir and the importance of positioning the Qur'an as a source for understanding religion.Contribution: This research contributes to revealing the Sufistic style of interpretation, which is not limited to verses dealing with ethics. The interpretation style lies in the approach rather than in the theme discussed. All verses can be approached from a Sufistic perspective, as conducted by Ibn 'Aṭāillāh.

Abstract

The concept of God is essential for both Jews and Muslims. Instead of using the terms Judaism and Islam, this study considers the terms Jews/Jewish and Muslims as more proper to focus on human beings as the subject of religion who are open to dialogue and change. Loving God’s creations is a process of loving the Creator. Thus, this study tries to connect Jewish and Muslim understanding and belief in God’s Names and its implications for their actions concerning the humanitarian crisis, especially today’s Israel-Palestine relationship. This study applies the content and comparative analysis of the texts (documents, videos, and pictures) related to the issue, along with the teachings of Isaac Luria and Mulla Sadra. In addition, a phenomenological approach is also used as it leads to an effort to understand religious thought and behavior from the point of view of the religious person. This study revealed that how humans understand Divine Names is manifested in how they treat each other. As human beings are the best manifestation of God, how we see, treat, and interact with others reflects our understanding of God’s names and vice versa. God’s names are all beautiful. Therefore, those who believe in God will do good to themselves, others, and the universe.Contribution: This study provides insight into a correlation between one’s beliefs and actions among Jews and Muslims. One’s actions reflect one’s understanding of God and vice versa. Also, how we can try to stay physically, mentally and spiritually strong amidst the happening conflicts and chaos through the reflection on the topic.

Abstract

The concept of Eco-Sufism, as an environmental ethic, believes that nature is the tajalliyāt and image of asmā and the attributes of God, all of which have theological and humanist sensibilities. The Qur’ān confirms this view, stating that all nature surrenders (aslama), submits to God’s laws (qāniṭūn), purifies (sabbaḥa), prostrates (yasjudu) and prays (ṣalāt). This library research focuses on analysing Tafsir Al-Mishbah by Muhammad Quraish Shihab as a primary source. The content analysis approach is used to uncover the mufassir’s views on Eco-Sufism in his tafsir. In contrast, the mauḍūʿi (thematic) method is applied to explore the concept of Eco-Sufism in the Qur’ān. The results showed that the religiosity of the universe expressed through paradigmatic dialectics and Eco-Sufism terms can be understood as a form of the universe’s submission to the system established by Allah the Almighty. The universe’s harmony, aptitude and discernment are clues to the Power and Oneness of the Creator. However, various natural activities such as tasbīḥ, sujūd, and ṣalāt are variously interpreted as majāzi or ḥaqīqī. However, the servitude of nature expressed through the activity of the universe is proof that nature also has a soul and spiritual dimension, just like humans.Contribution: This paper theoretically provides a holistic view of Sufism in building an ideal relationship among humans, God and the environment, which is expected to produce pragmatic results for the rescue and protection of nature and the environment.

Abstract

Javanese culture is rich. It has been practiced from generation to generation and still exists today. One kind of Javanese treasury in the form of work is Kitab Primbon (Book of forecasts), which is often used as a reference in various aspects of the life of Javanese people, such as marriage, business, work, predicting the future, and even knowing someone's character. This study aims to investigate the Kitab Primbon Betaljemur Adammakna, a book owned by Sultan Hamengku Buwono of Yogyakarta, which was rewritten by Pangeran Harya Tjakraningrat, regarding its epistemology and implications for inclusive attitudes. This study is classified as qualitative research, with the primary data collected from Kitab Primbon Betaljemur Adammakna. This study applies descriptive analysis. The results reveal that this book has Javanese mystical epistemology. Even though it is considered not to have a rational basis, it is believed to be valid among Javanese people and is thus still used as a reference for their lives. The book has profound implications for attitudes of tolerance in pluralistic Indonesian society. Through recognition of the plurality of spiritual paths, awareness of unity in diversity, karma, and compassion, and an attitude of humility and piety, this book encourages individuals and society to develop an inclusive attitude of tolerance and respect for the diversity of religions and beliefs.Contribution: This study provides an understanding of tolerance attitudes inspired by the local wisdom of Javanese people, i.e., Kitab Primbon.

Abstract

The relationship between Islam and the state is still debatable in Indonesia. Pancasila, as the foundation of the state, is also often contested, even though it was formulated by the Indonesian founding fathers through a very serious academic debate. This study will examine the role of K.H. Ahmad Asrori Al-Ishaqi (hereafter Kiai Asrori) Kedinding Surabaya as a Pancasilaist Sufi. This is qualitative-based research, where the data were collected from Kiai Asrori's works and his lectures uploaded on YouTube, observations, and direct and indirect interviews. The findings show that Kiai Asrori is a Sufi who is able to demonstrate that there are similarities between the teachings of Sufism and nationalism, especially with Pancasila. Both even have a symbiotic association. Kiai Asrori is an ulama and a Sufi who upholds the values of nationalism and democracy, which are reflected in the Majelis Lima Pilar (Five Pillars Assembly) he established. This assembly was built on two foundations, namely the practice and teachings of Sufism and nationalism and democratic values.Contribution: This study will provide new insights into Sufi practices and teachings that align with Pancasila values reflected in the figure of Kiai Asrori.

Abstract

For a servant, taking the mystical way to get closer to Allah is necessary to achieve perfection in this world and the hereafter. This study aims to reveal the mystical ways towards Allah from the perspective of Kyai Sholeh Darat, especially as elaborated in his book Minhāj al-Atqiyā' ilā Ma’rifati Hidāyat al-Adhkiyā' ilā Ṭarīqat al-Auliyā'. This study is qualitative-based research with a descriptive approach. The data were collected from library research. The data were then analysed using the Mile and Huberman analysis. The findings of this study reveal that 1) Kyai Sholeh Darat's book uses references from the Quran, hadith, and the trusted religious texts written by the taṣawwuf scholars; 2) the mystical way or sulūk that a spiritual traveller (sālik) undergoes to get ma'rifatullāh must go through sharī'a, ṭarīqa and ḥaqīqa; and 3) the methods used by Kyai Sholeh Darat in his book are bayānī and irfānī. Contribution: This study affirms that suluk to Allah must go through three paths, namely sharī'a, ṭarīqa and ḥaqīqa. Those three paths cannot be split from one another as there have been movements in which these three aspects are considered separated. For example, to pursue ḥaqīqa, the one only needs ṭarīqa without sharī'a, etc.
