Abstract

Kyai Badranaya is another name for figures in the purwa puppet show which is a symbolic figure for Javanese people. The special symbolic means to have variations, concepts of life, and beliefs in Javanese society. In the Javanese purwa puppet show, Semar figures are representations of good and wise qualities in human beings. Real Semar figures are also gods who transformed into commoners and became servants, protectors, and also knights of Pandawa namely Yudhistira, Bima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sadewa in the Javanese version of the Mahabharata epics. The musical composition of Kyai Badranaya is part of the four musical compositions of Kidung Semar by the author, who presents musical performances with ideas from the values and semar phenomenon of Semar figures in the purwa puppet show in Java. The method is carried out through stages, namely the alignment process, and sound training. With this method, the music composition of Kyai Badranaya is compiled and presented in the form of a musical repertoire, which proposes reflection and thoughts about how one becomes a leader who applies the life concept of Semar, namely tepa selira, lembah manah, and andhap asor. The purpose of various organizations is the application used as a learning medium for the general public in the form of new music works. The result of the creation of this musical composition work is to contribute scientific thinking on how to create new music works by utilizing work from traditional sources of Javanese musical music in particular, as well as archipelago music.

Abstract

This study investigated about persuasive power and rhetorical style in Barrack Obama’s and John McCain’s speeches to answer two problems: how Barrack Obama’s and John McCain’s political speeches conveyed persuasive power as reflected in their rhetorical styles and what the differences of Barrack Obama’s political speeches from John McCain’s speeches are in terms of: persuasive power of the message conveyed and the rhetorical style from eighteen speeches during Presidential Election Campaign of United States in 2008. The researcher used rhetorical criticism as the technique in analyzing the data. The data of the present study were sentences which were considered to have persuasive power that were created by using rhetorical style. Having analyzed the data, the researcher revealed the following findings: (1) The researcher found that both Obama and John McCain used rhetorical style to convey the meaning in their speeches. Yet, they produced the rhetorical style differently in case of the time they brought into the speeches; Obama brought the future but McCain brought the past; (2) Obama had more persuasive power in his speech comparing with John McCain since he produced more frequent and more various rhetorical style.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penggunaan istilah 4 Pilar MPR RI yang terdiri atas Pancasila, UUD 1945, NKRI, dan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. Penggunaan istilah 4 Pilar MPR RI mulai populer sejak MPR RI melakukan sosialisasi program 4 Pilar MPR RI ke berbagai elemen masyarakat dan akademisi. Istilah 4 Pilar MPR RI mulai diperkenalkan oleh MPR RI sejak tahun 2009 sebagai salah satu bentuk penamaan program kegiatan kebangsaan. Namun, istilah ini menjadi polemik di masyarakat dan akademik karena penggunaan istilah 4 pilar MPR RI tidak lazim untuk menyebut Pancasila, UUD 1945, NKRI, dan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika sebagai kategori varian yang sama disebut pilar. Penelitian ini merupakan bagian dari penelitian disertasi yang mengkritisi dan menganalisis terkait problem istilah dan makna bahasa dalam 4 Pilar MPR RI secara filsafati dengan kerangka teori language game Wittgenstein. Data penelitian ini diperoleh melalui kajian pustaka. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis verstehen dan interpretasi bahasa untuk mengungkap latar belakang dan problematika penggunaan istilah 4 Pilar MPR RI. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan istilah 4 Pilar MPR RI telah menyebabkan distorsi pemaknaan atas Pancasila, UUD 1945, NKRI, dan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika dan istilah ini tidak mengikuti permainan bahasa yang baik dan benar. This study aims to analyze the use of the terms 4 MPR RI Pillars which consist of Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Republic of Indonesia, and Unity in Diversity. The use of the term 4 The MPR RI pillar began to be popular since the People's Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) disseminated the 4 MPR RI Pillars program to various elements of society and academia. The term 4 MPR RI Pillars began to be introduced by the MPR RI since 2009 as one form of naming the national activities program. However, this term is a polemic in society and academics because the use of the terms of the 4 pillars of the MPR RI is not unusual to refer to Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, NKRI, and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika as the same variant category called pillars. This research is part of a dissertation research that criticizes and analyzes the problems of language terms and meanings in 4 MPR RI Pillars philosophically with the Wittgenstein theory of language game framework. The data of this study were obtained through literature review. The method used in this study uses verstehen analysis methods and language interpretation to uncover the background and problematic use of the term 4 MPR RI Pillars. The results of this study indicate that the use of the term 4 MPR RI Pillar has caused a distortion of the meaning of Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, NKRI, and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika and this term does not follow the game of good and correct language.

Abstract

In the new era of audiovisual translation (AVT), identifying the translation of wordplay from English into Indonesian in various English comedy movies and series is a massive task as the wordplay is a form of humor which quite problematic to translate. The fundamental issue in translating humor is about the diversity of languages and different linguistic typology. This paper is to investigate types of wordplay found in the subtitles of Friends and strategies applied to translate English wordplay into Indonesian. The data of this study was collected from a long American series entitled ‘Friends’ from season one to ten. Hence, the most appropriate method employed is qualitative. The sampling technique applied is purposive sampling. The total four types of wordplay found in an American series entitled ‘Friends’ to create laughter, namely: phonological and graphological structure (consists of homonymy, paronymy, and homophony), lexical structure (polysemy), morphological structure, and syntactic structure. In the translation strategies, there are three dominant ways used by the translator, namely: wordplay to wordplay, wordplay to non-wordplay, and editorial technique. However, most of the translator whom sub movies or series used wordplay to non-wordplay strategy. This technique has a significant effect in rendering the meaning to the target text that affects the audience when they watch the film whether to laugh or not to laugh. Pada era modern di mana bidang penerjemahan audio visual (AVT) berkembang, mengidentifikasi terjemahan wordplay (permainan kata) dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia dalam berbagai film dan serial komedi Barat merupakan tugas yang tidak mudah, mengingat permainan kata adalah salah satu bentuk humor yang cukup sulit diterjemahkan. Kendala dasar dalam menerjemahkan humor adalah mengenai keragaman bahasa dan tipologi linguistik yang berbeda. Tulisan ini membahas mengenai jenis wordplay dan strategi yang diterapkan untuk menerjemahkan wordplay dalam subtitle serial ‘Friends’. Data penelitian ini berasal dari serial Amerika berjudul 'Friends' dari season 1 hingga 10. Oleh karena itu, metode yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah metode kualitatif. Teknik sampling yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah teknik purposive sampling. Terdapat empat jenis permainan kata yang ditemukan dalam serial ‘Friends’, yaitu: struktur fonologis dan grafologis (terdiri dari homonimi, paronimi, dan homofoni), struktur leksikal (polisemi), struktur morfologis, dan struktur sintaksis. Sementara, dalam strategi penerjemahan, terdapat tiga cara yang paling dominan digunakan oleh penerjemah, yaitu: wordplay to wordplay, wordplay to non-wordplay, dan editorial technique. Namun, sebagian besar penerjemah subtitle dalam film atau serial komedi ini menggunakan strategi wordplay-nonwordplay. Teknik ini mempengaruhi efek kelucuan yang signifikan pada teks subtitle di bahasa target sehingga berpengaruh bagi penonton saat film atau serial ditonton.

Abstract

Cirebon yang merupakan pusat penyebaran Agama Islam di Pulau Jawa, memiliki masyarakat yang dinamis dan heterogen. Percampuran budaya pada masyarakat Cirebon menjadikan Cirebon sebagai wilayah yang memiliki budaya campuran. Di Cirebon, percampuran budaya ini menghasilkan pergeseran yang dikenal dengan istilah Srabad yang memiliki arti mingser saking abad artinya bergesernya abad, dari masa klasik menuju masa Islam. Penelitian ini akan mengurai kaligrafi Arab yang terdapat pada jimat melalui perspektif seni, magi dan religi. Ketiga komponen ini akan berelasi satu dengan lainnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan visual metodologi dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis elemen-elemen visual yang terdapat dalam jimat melalui pendekatan estetika serta pendekatan budaya. Hasil dari penelitian ini akan mengungkap bahwa makna seni, magi dan religi pada kaligrafi Arab yang terdapat dalam jimat merupakan cerminan ideologi dan budaya masyarakat Cirebon. Cirebon as the center of dissemination of Islam in Java Island, has a dynamic and heterogeneous society. Multicultural influence in the Cirebon community develops Cirebon as an area that has a mixed culture. In Cirebon, the mixture of culture resulted in a social change in the area which is known as Srabad or mingser saking abad means the shift of the century, from the classical age to the time of Islam. This research will break down Arabic calligraphy found in jimat through artistic, magic and religious perspectives. These three components will relate to one another. This study uses visual methodology with the aim of analyzing the visual elements contained in the talisman or jimat through aesthetic and cultural approaches. The result of this study shows that the meaning of art, magic, and religion found in Arabic calligraphy contained in the talisman or jimat is a reflection of the ideology and culture of Cirebon society.

Abstract

This thesis presents an analysis on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story entitled Murder in the Rue Morgue. The purposes of this thesis are, first, to know the intrinsic elements of Murder in the Rue Morgue such as setting, character, plot and conflict, and theme. Second, to find out the relationship among the intrinsic elements of the short story. The methods used in this thesis were library research method and structural approach method. The library research method was applied to get information to support the ideas of this thesis, in this research using Edgar Allan Poe’s Short Story. Meanwhile, the structural approach method was used to analyze the intrinsic elements and how they are related one to another. The result of the analysis shows how the intrinsic elements especially setting, character, plot and conflict and theme are described in Murder in the Rue Morgue. From the analysis above we know, that Murder in the Rue Morgue tells about thriller and massacre happens in Rue Morgue, fourth floor apartment. The writer makes conclusion that the theme is “analytic mind is useless without assistance and cooperation” The theme is based on the fact that the main character named Dupin has analytic mind, with his analytic mind, he can solve every case happens around him. When there is murder case in Rue Morgue, the cooperation and assistance are formed then the truth is revealed, and the murderer is Ourang-outang. Penelitian ini menyajikan analisis tentang cerita pendek Edgar Allan Poe berjudul Murder in Rue Morgue. Tujuan dari tesis ini adalah, pertama, untuk mengetahui unsur-unsur intrinsik Pembunuhan di Rue Morgue seperti seting, karakter, plot dan konflik, dan tema. Kedua, untuk mengetahui hubungan unsur intrinsik dari cerpen. Metode yang digunakan dalam tesis ini adalah metode penelitian kepustakaan dan metode pendekatan struktural. Metode penelitian perpustakaan diterapkan untuk mendapatkan informasi untuk mendukung ide-ide tesis ini, dalam penelitian ini menggunakan Cerpen Edgar Allan Poe. Sementara itu, metode pendekatan struktural digunakan untuk menganalisis elemen intrinsik dan bagaimana mereka terkait satu sama lain. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bagaimana elemen intrinsik terutama pengaturan, karakter, plot dan konflik dan tema dijelaskan dalam Murder in Rue Morgue. Dari analisis di atas kita tahu, bahwa Pembunuhan di Rue Morgue bercerita tentang film pembunuhan dan pembantaian yang terjadi di Rue Morgue, di depan apartemen. Penulis membuat kesimpulan bahwa tema adalah "pikiran analitik tidak berguna tanpa bantuan dan kerjasama" Tema ini didasarkan pada kenyataan bahwa karakter utama bernama Dupin memiliki pikiran analitik, dengan pikiran analitiknya, ia dapat menyelesaikan setiap kasus yang terjadi di sekitarnya. Ketika ada kasus pembunuhan di Rue Morgue, kerja sama dan bantuan terbentuk maka kebenaran terungkap, bahwa pembunuhnya adalah Ourang-outang.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the type of possessive construction and the possessive relationship between possessor/PR and possessum/PM in the possessive construction of English in short story There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury. The data were taken from sentences contained possessive construction in short story it. The data were collected by reading and noting and were analyzed by means of the distributional method to determine the type of possessive construction relationship and the correspondence method to determine the possessive relationships between the possessor and the possessed. The findings are as follows first, the type of possessive construction was found in short story it was attributive possession. Second, The relationships can be categorized into three possessive relationships, namely the ownership, part-whole, and abstract. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan tipe konstruksi posesif dan hubungan antara “pemilik” (possessor/PR) dan “yang dimiliki” (possessum/PM) pada konstruksi posesif Bahasa Ingris dalam cerita pendek There Will Come Soft Rains karya Ray Bradbury. Data diambil dari kalimat yang mengandung konstruksi posesif dalam cerita pendek There Will Come Soft Rains karya Ray Bradbury. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara baca catat sedangkan teknik analsis data dilakukan dengan metode agih untuk menentukan tipe kontruksi posesif dan metode padan untuk menentukan hubungan antara (possessor/PR) dan “yang dimiliki” (possessum/PM). Berdasarkan hasil analisis data ditemukan hasilnya adalah pertama, tipe utama konstruksi posesif yang ditemukan dalam cerita pendek There Will Come Soft Rains karya Ray Bradbury adalah dominan tipe hubungan atribut. Kedua, hubungan posesif antara (possessor/PR) dan “yang dimiliki” (possessum/PM) dalam konstruksi posesif yang ditemukan ada tiga unsur, yaitu hubungan Hubungan kepemilikan, Hubungan keseluruhan-sebagian, dan Hubungan sesuatu dan atributnya.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the translation techniques that caused loss is translation used by the translator in translating the smurf comic entitled The Jewel Smurfer into Pensmurf Perhiasan. The source of the data in this study is a comic entitled The Jewel Smurfer which has been translated into Pensmurf Perhiasan in Indonesian. The smurf comic actually is a Belgian comic, so the data used in this study is translated from Belgian to English. This research employed descriptive qualitative method. The result of the study shows that reduction technique, linguistic compression technique, and particularization technique used by translator in translating a comic entitled The Jewel Smurfer into Pensmurf Perhiasan. The loss in the translation of comic entitled The Jewel Smurfer appeared because of the space limitation in the comic. Other reasons are because the translator wanted to make a good translation, sound natural in the target language and acceptable by the readers.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan penerjemah saat harus mengurangi makna saat menerjemahkan komik berjudul The Jewel Smurfer yang diterjemahkan menjadi Pensmurf Perhiasan. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah komik The Jewel Smurfer yang telah diterjemahkan menjadi Pensmurf Perhiasan dalam bahasa Indonesia. Komik smurf sendiri sebenarnya adalah komik yang berasal dari negara Belgia, sehingga data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah hasil terjemahan dari bahasa Belgia ke bahasa Inggris yang kemudian diterjemahkan kembali ke bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif qualitative. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teknik reduksi, teknik kompresi linguistik, dan teknik partikularisasi digunakan oleh penerjemah saat menerjemahkan komik berjudul The Jewel Smurfer ke Pensmurf Perhiasan. Pengurangan makna dari komik berjudul The Jewel Smurfer yang diterjemahkan menjadi Pensmurf Perhiasan terjadi kerena batasan ruang di komik. Alasan lainnya adalah karena penerjemah ingin membuat penerjamahan yang baik, terdengar lazim di bahasa sasaran, dan dapat diterima oleh pembaca.
