Abstract

Farmers’ capability determines the effectiveness of resource management and the sustainability of smallholder beef cattle enterprises. This study aimed to assess farmers’ capability in managing beef cattle among livestock groups in Timoreng Panua Village, Panca Rijang District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. A survey was conducted from July to August 2024 involving 17 farmers selected from 116 members of eight livestock groups. Primary data were collected through structured interviews using a questionnaire and field observations, while secondary data were obtained from village records and relevant agencies. Five aspects were assessed: farming experience, husbandry performance, farming success, capacity to cope with production constraints, and access to capital. Each aspect was measured on a five-point Likert scale and analyzed descriptively using frequencies, scores, and achievement indices. All aspects were classified as moderate. Farming experience obtained the highest score of 57, equivalent to 67.1% of the maximum score, followed by husbandry performance at 53 (62.4%), farming success and capacity to cope with constraints at 52 each (61.2%), and access to capital at 50 (58.8%). The overall capability index was 62.1%. These findings indicate that relatively long farming experience has not been fully accompanied by stronger capital access and business management. Capacity-building programs should prioritize financing access, farm record keeping, feed management, animal health, and continuous group-based extension.

Abstract

Rice is a major food crop in Indonesia, but its productivity fluctuates partly due to pest and disease attacks. Tungro disease, transmitted by the green leafhopper (Nephotettix virescens), can significantly reduce rice yield. This study aimed to determine disease incidence, disease severity index, and plant height reduction caused by tungro disease in different rice varieties and lines. The study was conducted in the greenhouse of the BRMP Aneka Tanaman Umbi, Lanrang, Sidenreng Rappang Regency, using a Completely Randomized Design with five rice genotypes: Tukad Unda, TN1, Mekongga, Ciherang, and MR219. Each genotype had three replications, resulting in 30 test plants. The results showed that Ciherang and TN1 had the highest disease incidence, reaching 100%, and were classified as highly susceptible to tungro disease. Mekongga had an incidence of 83.33% and was classified as susceptible, while MR219 showed an incidence of 50% and was classified as moderately resistant. Tukad Unda showed no disease symptoms, with 0% incidence, and was classified as highly resistant. The highest disease severity index was recorded in Ciherang (9.00), followed by TN1 (7.00), Mekongga (6.33), MR219 (4.67), and Tukad Unda (1.00). The greatest plant height reduction occurred in Ciherang (16.00 cm) and TN1 (9.00 cm), while Mekongga, MR219, and Tukad Unda showed reductions of 2.33, 0.33, and 0 cm, respectively. Overall, Tukad Unda showed the highest resistance to tungro disease among the tested genotypes.

Abstract

Vines (lianas) are a type of biological resource used by communities as traditional herbal medicine. This study aimed to identify the types of vines used as herbal medicine by the people of Enrekang Regency, the parts of the plants used, the methods of processing, and the types of illnesses treated. The study employed a descriptive-exploratory method with a qualitative approach through field surveys, ethnobotanical interviews, participatory observation, and visual documentation. A total of six informants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of sanro, community leaders, farmers, and residents with knowledge of medicinal plants. The results showed that 12 species of climbing plants are used as herbal medicines, namely Momordica charantia, Tinospora crispa, Cucumis sativus, Centella asiatica, Anredera cordifolia, Passiflora foetida, Piper nigrum, Piper ornatum, Abrus precatorius, Piper betle, Sechium edule, and Clitoria ternatea. The most commonly used plant parts are the leaves and fruits, while the predominant processing methods are boiling and direct use. Use Value (UV) analysis shows that Piper ornatum has the highest use value (UV=2.00), indicating the highest level of use by the community. Knowledge regarding the use of medicinal plants has been passed down from generation to generation and is still preserved as part of the community’s local wisdom.

Abstract

Enhancing shallot productivity should focus on efficient, environmentally sustainable cultivation practices. Innovations in cultivation, such as the use of liquid organic fertilizers and plant growth regulators like Benzyl Amino Purine (BAP), represent a promising approach to sustainably improving yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of liquid organic fertilizer and BAP on the growth and yield of shallot plants, and to examine the interaction between different liquid organic fertilizer doses and BAP concentrations. The experiment was arranged using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two treatment factors. The first factor consisted of four levels of liquid organic fertilizer: 0 mL L?¹, 50 mL L?¹, 100 mL L?¹, and 150 mL L?¹, applied to the growing media. The second factor was BAP concentration, with three levels (0 ppm, 100 ppm, and 200 ppm), applied via foliar spraying. The combination of these factors resulted in 12 treatment combinations, each replicated three times, yielding a total of 36 experimental units. Each unit consisted of two plants, resulting in a total of 72 plants. The results indicated that the application of 500 mL L-1 liquid organic fertilizer combined with 200 ppm BAP significantly affected plant height at 5 weeks after planting (WAP) and had a significant single-factor effect on root number. A significant interaction effect was observed on plant height at 5 WAP. However, no significant effects were found on the number of tillers, stomatal number, stomatal density, bulb diameter, and overall shallot productivity.

Abstract

The Talakayya Farmers’ Group in Mandalle Village, West Bajeng Subdistrict, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, uses combine harvesters during the rice harvest to improve cost efficiency and reduce labor requirements. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of farmers’ adoption of combine harvesters in terms of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and the economic and social impacts resulting from their use. This study employs a qualitative case study approach. There were eight informants, all of whom were members of the Talakayya farmers’ group. Data were analyzed descriptively through observation, interviews, and documentation. Specifically, social impacts were analyzed through coding and visualized using NVivo version 12. The results indicate that farmers understand the machine’s functions and benefits and hold a positive attitude toward it, as the machine saves harvesting time and reduces labor costs from an economic perspective. However, in terms of skills, they are not yet able to operate the machine independently. The social impact has led to a decline in mutual assistance and social interaction. The conclusion of this study is that farmers’ adoption of the combine harvester is limited to their knowledge and attitudes toward its use in agricultural mechanization and has not yet reached the level of technical skills required to operate it. The government is seen as needing to facilitate technical assistance and training.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper is a high-value horticultural commodity, but farm income is sensitive to output-price and production-cost changes. This study analyzed cost structure, revenue, income, profitability heterogeneity, financial feasibility, and switching values for cayenne pepper farms in Bululoe Village, Jeneponto Regency. The survey involved 34 farmers selected by simple random sampling from a population of 137; sample size was determined using Slovin's formula with a 15% error tolerance. Individual one-season observations were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the R/C ratio, simple accounting break-even points, unit production cost, and switching values. The pooled R/C ratio was 3.07, while the mean individual R/C was 3.34 (SD 0.63; range 2.62-4.95); all 34 farms had R/C > 1. Mean individual farm income was IDR 24.39 million per season, ranging from IDR 8.49 to 53.77 million. Re-summing individual land records produced 13.14 ha and an aggregate productivity of 4.68 t/ha. Pooled production cost was approximately IDR 6,525/kg, while individual unit costs ranged from IDR 4,040 to 7,647/kg. Labor accounted for about 78% of recorded total cost. Holding other factors constant, the pooled selling price could fall by 67.38% or total cost could rise by 206.52% before R/C reached 1; individual price-decline thresholds ranged from 61.77% to 79.80%. Results should be interpreted as financial feasibility based on recorded costs because the same IDR 20,000/kg price was used for all respondents and family labor was not fully valued at opportunity cost.

Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems are part of the components of tropical coastal ecosystems that have high ecological and economic functions. They provide habitat for marine biota, act as sediment stabilizers, and are very effective blue carbon storage. This study aims to analyze the structure of seagrass communities in the waters of Sembilan Island, Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi. Data collection was conducted at six stations using quadrat transect and line transect methods to identify species and calculate ecological indices. These indices include Shannon-Wiener Diversity, Pielou Evenness, and Simpson Dominance. The identification results showed that there were seven seagrass species, namely Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Syringodium isoetifolium, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule pinifolia, Halophila minor, and Halophila ovalis. The diversity index value was 1.579 (moderate category), uniformity 0.811 (high), and dominance 0.244 (low), describing a relatively stable and ecologically balanced community. Inter-station correlation analysis showed r values ranging from 0.89 to 1.00, indicating high spatial homogeneity and strong ecological connectivity between observation sites. The resulting community structure is a combination of long-lived climax species (E. acoroides, T. hemprichii) and short-lived pioneer species (H. pinifolia, and H. ovalis), which together maintain regeneration dynamics and ecosystem function. These findings indicate that the seagrass meadows on Sembilan Island are healthy, stable, and functioning optimally as a blue carbon ecosystem, playing a crucial role in storing carbon, stabilizing sediments, and supporting coastal resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Abstract

The habit of consuming less nutritious snacks among children remains a contributing factor to low protein and essential nutrient intake. The development of healthy snacks based on local fishery resources is one effort to improve children's nutritional quality. This study aims to evaluate the nutritional content and acceptance level of tilapia-based fish sticks (Oreochromis mossambicus) as a healthy snack alternative. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one factor, namely the addition of tilapia fish meat of 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% with three replications. The parameters observed included water, protein, fat, ash, and carbohydrate content, as well as the level of panelist acceptance through a hedonic test. The results showed that the addition of tilapia fish meat had a significant effect (P<0.05) on increasing protein levels, with the highest value being 23.78% in the 45% treatment, and reducing carbohydrate levels to 49.43%, while water, fat, and ash levels did not differ significantly between treatments. The hedonic test results showed that all formulations were well-received by the panelists, with the formulation with 45% tilapia fish being the most acceptable for appearance, aroma, taste, and texture. This formulation has the potential to be developed as a healthy snack alternative with good nutritional quality and consumer acceptance to support children's nutritional status.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the morphometry of Dillenia in West Sulawesi and its relationship with abiotic factors in the Buttupuang Protected Forest. This species has ecological, economic, and cultural value, but its population in nature is thought to be declining due to overexploitation and low natural regeneration, putting it at risk of local extinction. Understanding morphological variation and response to environmental factors is important as a basis for taxonomic identification, conservation, and sustainable use. The research methods included measuring the morphometry of leaves, fruits, and stems, as well as abiotic factors, using a sample size of 9 with three replicates, then analyzed using PCA with the PAST application. The dendrogram results showed that the Dillenia population was divided into two clusters, namely cluster I (area A, separated as a distinct group) and cluster II (areas B–C with a similarity index of 96.7%). Biplot analysis revealed that the main abiotic factors associated with morphometric diversity were temperature, air humidity, and soil pH, with growth parameters more closely related to humidity. Area A was influenced by temperature, area B by humidity and growth, while area C was more inclined towards edaphic factors (soil pH) and leaf size.

Abstract

Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) is a pelagic fish that has oceanic characteristics that always migrate from one water to another that has oceanographic, biological and meteorological conditions that suit its habitat. Currently the use of geographic information system (GIS) technology is widely used in obtaining information about oceanographic characteristics, one of which is the use of satellite imagery data. With the collaboration between GIS and the latest satellite, namely Sentinel-3, it can determine potential fishing zones. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of sea surface temperature parameters on catches to determine the potential zone for skipjack tuna fishing in the Makassar Strait Waters. This study uses a quantitative method, namely using primary data, namely collecting coordinate points of fishing and catches of skipjack tuna in the Makassar Strait Waters and secondary data, namely oceanographic parameter data in the form of sea surface temperature data obtained from Sentinel-3 satellite imagery during January and February, data analysis through a histogram of the relationship between skipjack tuna catches and SST oceanographic parameters, making a map of potential areas for skipjack tuna fishing using ArcGIS 10.8 software. The results of the study showed the optimum sea surface temperature range for catching skipjack tuna is 29 - 30oC with a catch of 841 - 1010kg and is at the coordinate point 118.1o - 118.3o East Longitude and 2.2o - 2.5o South Latitude. The optimum chlorophyll-a range is 0.1 - 0.4 mg/m3 with a catch of 655 - 738kg located at the coordinate point 117o - 118o East Longitude and 2.4o - 2.5o South Latitude.
