The Prasasti: Journal of Linguistics (PJL) is devoted to the problems of general linguistics. Its aim is to present work of current interest in all areas of linguistics. Contributions are required to contain such general theoretical implications as to be of interest to any linguist, whatever their own specialisation. PJL, previously known as UNS Journal of Language Studies, is a journal of linguistics to accommodate scientific articles from Descriptive Linguistics, Pragmatics, and Translation Studies.

Abstract

Many exposure of foreign languages, in this case is English, in daily communication could give significant impact towards oral and written language to the Indonesian speech community. That phenomenon was the result of language contact which is widespread in this digital era. This research aimed to identify English vocabulary which found in the caption on social media Instagram account of Ministry and Non-Ministerial Government Agencies in Indonesia. Data in this research were the English loanwords vocabulary and interference which are obtained by applying observation method with screenshot and note taking technique. Data source used is the social media Instagram account of Ministry and Non-Ministerial Government Agencies in Indonesia, such as @bekrafid, @kemdikbud.ri, @ristekdikti, @kemlu.ri, @kemenpar, @infobmkg, and @kemenhub151. The results found of this study were loanwords, loanblends, and loanshifts, also phonological, morphological, and lexical interference.

Abstract

In the language competence that is inseparable from the speech act strategies, the socio-pragmatic transfer ability of second language learners can be explored in the use of speech acts which were currently examined through the use of complaints. This study aimed to describe what are the differences of speech act strategies in complaints used in English and Indonesian by International students and how pragmatic transfers in complaints are used by foreign students in producing languages. The data collection used Discourse Completion Test (DCT) with 4 International students in Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Gadjah Mada who stayed less than 6 months in Indonesia. The threat strategies were generally used to the hearer who have lower social status even with intimacy. However, when social status is aligned, the choice of complaint strategies switched to explicit strategies, on the other side, when the status of interlocutors is higher than the speaker, the use of the speech act strategy was replaced by implicit strategies.

Abstract

Nebeng Boy is one of the most popular YouTube content created by Indonesian YouTuber and an ex-Video Jockey from MTV, Boy William. The participants in this YouTube content are divided into two; the Host and the Guests. This research aims to find out the code choices chosen by the participants of YouTube content “Nebeng Boy” and the reasons why the participants choose the different codes.This research was a case study of sociolinguistics which employed a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher has done a few techniques namely taking notes from observing the conversation, transcribing the dialogues between participants, and classifying the data. The researcher used total sampling technique and took the whole part of dialogue from six videos of “Nebeng Boy”.The results of this research show that the code choices employed by the participants of Nebeng Boy are informal variety from Bahasa Indonesia and English which resembles of high social class or high social status. Each participant has different way in using the codes and also has different reason behind it. The Host of the program uses informal code choices to show solidarity, express emotions, show intimacy, changing topics, and including another person to the conversation. Meanwhile, the factors that the guests use the code choices are the background of the person, the profession, function of the conversation, topics, the situation of conversation, and to include another person.

Abstract

In Eka Kurniawan’s novel, Lelaki Harimau, incoherent story telling is one of its most visible characteristeristic. Incohorent story telling is used by Eka kurniawan not only to pique the reader interest but also to emphasise cause and effect in every action that characters do in the novel. With a theory offered by Genette, this study tries to explain the order of event in Lelaki Harimau to show the causality that Eka Kruniawan use as the core theme in his novel. This study also tries to show how structural theories can be used as a foundation to interpret novel. From the explanation of causality in Lelaki Harimau novel, it is found that violence only begets violence.

Abstract

This study attempts to compare between Anies Rasyid Baswedan and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in terms of speech act as their reaction of the attacks in Christchurch New Zealand particularly: a) the kinds of expressive speech act used; b) the intended meaning of expressive speech act; and c) the personality differences between them seen the use of speech act. The qualitative method was used to fulfil the three objectives of the study. The data was collected from document that was taken from the utterances used by the two public figures. It was transcribed and then analysed descriptively. The results show that the speakers used three kinds of expressive speech acts, namely: condoling, deploring, and lamenting. Condoling is an expressive speech acts were mostly used to communicate by the speakers. The intended meaning of expressive speech act used by the speakers are determined by interpreting and determining what speakers means in the context. In addition, the personality characters of Anies Rasyid Baswedan are kind, clever, and soft, whereas, the personality characters of Recep Tayyip Erdogan are courageous, influential person, and clever.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the comparison of the translation results of two translation machines, Google Translate and Bing Translator. The object of this research is the hedging words contained in one of the opinions in The Jakarta Post's online newspaper entitled Why Indonesians should write about Indonesia in English more often. The types of hedges that appear in the article and become the object of research are in four types, namely: lexical verb, modal auxiliary verb, compound hedges, and adverb of frequency. From the analysis conducted, the writer found that the translation of hedging words with two translation machines assisted different results of the translation are identical. The method used by the two translation machines is literal translation so that the form and meaning of the source text is equivalent to the form and meaning of the target text. The author believes that the artificial intelligence developed in those two translation machines has different abilities and can be proven by research with wider and more varied sentence objects.

Abstract

Keberagaman masyarakat Kota Bandar Lampung menimbulkan ragam bahasa yang dipakai oleh masyarakat setempat dan mempengaruhi bahasa daerah yang ada di Kota Bandar Lampung itu sendiri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fenomena keberagaman bahasa yang terjadi di masyarakat Kota Bandar Lampung dan faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi adanya fenomena dari keberagaman bahasa yang hidup di Kota Bandar Lampung. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Objek Penulis menggunakan data sebanyak 61 data dan menggunakan teknik wawancara dengan penyebarkan angket atau kuesioner. Berdasarkan analisis data, ditemukan bahwa keberagaman bahasa yang terjadi pada masyarakat Kota Bandar Lampung disebabkan oleh mayoritas penduduk yang mendiami wilayah Kota Bandar Lampung berasal dari beragam suku. Dari hasil keseluruhan pada penelitian ini diperoleh data bahwa bahasa yang paling dominan dipakai di Kota Bandar Lampung adalah bahasa Indonesia 78,7%, Bahasa Lampung 11,5%, dan Bahasa Jawa 8,2%. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah penutur asal daerah Lampung tidak menjadi dominan di tempat asalnya serta fenomena keberagam bahasa di masyarakat kota Bandar Lampung disebabkan oleh masyarakat yang multikultural sehingga mendorong intensitas penggunaan bahasa Indonesia sangat tinggi dan menyebabkan bahasa daerah Lampung semakin lemah dalam penggunaannya dibandingkan dengan bahasa lainnya.

Abstract

In order to write an abstract that appeals to a broader audience, it is important to understand the vocabulary used in the context. By identifying words used in the abstracts of undergraduate thesis from Politeknik Negeri Batam students and comparing them with those used in other academic writings, this research attempts to show that developing student’s awareness of academic writing genre is critical for their progress. The data were taken from the abstract section of undergraduate thesis of Politeknik Negeri Batam students published in 2018, which were compiled into a corpus. From the corpus, the keywords and word profile would be identified, which could then be compared to other corpora. Two word lists (New General Service List and New Academic Word List) were selected as the level lists in carrying out word profiling during the analysis. The results show that the students lacked the necessary words and had not yet recognized the genre of academic writing.

Abstract

This article explores Pangudarasa’s editorial texts in the Panjebar Semangat magazine by using a systemic theory of functional linguistics particularly an appraisal analysis of texts. The objectives of this research are (1) to identify the appraisal tools in Pangudarasa’s editorial texts in a Javanese magazine called Panjebar Semangat, and (2) to describe the perceptions of Pangudarasa’s editorial text writers in the Panjebar Semangat magazine. This descriptive qualitative research used a qualitative method along with a content analysis platform. The data pertaining to words, phrases, clauses, and sentences coincided with appraisal tools. The data source was derived from the Panjebar Semangat magazine, which was published on December 21, 2019 entitled Kasus Garuda, Wanci Kang Pas Kanggo Ngresiki BUMN. The data analysis used a method of referential matching tools to determine a phenomenon beyond the language. The results of data analysis show that (1) appraisal tools in the editorial texts of Pangudarasa in the Panjebar Semangat magazine dominantly present appreciation (42.55%), judgment (36.17%) and affect (21.28%), and (2) the pattern of writers' perceptions to support the Minister Erick Thohir's decision in handling the Garuda Airlines case. This support is reinforced by the use of language functions to influence others by assessing a case directly and authors of editorial texts have a tendency to tell sensitive things or issues mainly concerned with events in the community.

Abstract

This research is aimed to identify the utterances of bald on record Face Threatening Acts, to analyze its translation techniques and its translation quality in the comic entitled Scrooge McDuck’s Greatest Treasure by Carl Bark. This research is a qualitative research. The source of research is the Scrooge McDuck’s Greatest Treasure comic with its translation and the informant who assessed the translation quality. The data is speech which represent the bald on record utterances. The data are collected using document analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The research found 84 data which represent bald on record utterance in the comic. The translation techniques is dominated by established equivalence. The translation quality shows that the accuracy is 2,85, acceptability is 3 and readability is 2,95.
