Abstract

In recent decades places that use attractive urban lighting to attract visitors have emerged. This shows a shift in lighting, giving the impression of a place, nocturnal image, and attracting attention. The purpose of this paper is to explore places, activities, and impressions of attractive urban lighting to see its potential in improving city visuals at night. The data was collected through an online questionnaire distributed by a non-random snowball sampling method from 126 respondents. The analysis was carried out in stages, starting with content analysis and continued with correspondence analysis and hierarchical clustering. The results showed that places with attractive urban lighting could be grouped into seven categories of place, ten categories of activity, six categories of impression. Three models are formed from these themes, namely cognitive image, unique images, and affective image, which will form an overall image of attractive urban lighting as the new destination branding.

Abstract

To create a successful temporary public space that can sustain in dealing with the contemporary changes, particularly during this pandemic era which is full of uncertainty, the degree of people’s attachment to that place should be maintained. It is simply because the more the public space is needed, the more users will use the space, and a sense of belonging will grow to help maintain its sustainability afterward. The temporality aspect of time, nevertheless, can affect the growth of a person’s place attachment. Using Husserl’s phenomenological analysis of noema and noesis, this qualitative study intends to understand the place attachment development in one of the notorious temporary public spaces in Indonesia, a Ramadan street market, particularly in Batam. Direct observation and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the data regarding the theoretical framework of place attachment obtained from the literature review. This study reveals that, through the noematic synthesis, the external dimensions (physical characteristic) most likely lead to functional attachment or place dependence. Whilst through the noetic synthesis, the psychological attachment or place identity of the temporary public space can be influenced by the internal dimensions of place attachment (social intercourse, social cohesion, and social symbol).

Abstract

Residential houses such as flats located near industrial areas are vulnerable to the threat of high-intensity dust, thereby, exposing the occupants to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) in the form of health problems, especially in the upper respiratory system. Therefore, this research was conducted to find appropriate design solutions to minimize dust from entering buildings through the application of geometric planes as a form of defense. It is also important to note that dust is closely related to the direction of the wind which is its conveying medium. This led to the determination of the right geometric shape to be applied as a dust barrier in the building facade. Moreover, this research was based on the force-based framework which proposes a form-refine-assembly stage consisting of several methods to determine the shape through simulation and evaluation associated with existing theories. The results were able to determine the position and shape of the facade area to serve as the barrier to the arrival of dust. The design is expected to be integrated into the shape and landscape layout of buildings to reduce dust in the site area.

Abstract

Energy efficiency is important in saving energy needs and reducing budget funds for hospital operations. There needs to be an effort to save energy using renewable solar energy sources. This study aimed to determine the optimal energy gain, the Break Event Point value, and the PV efficiency on the facade and roof of the RSUP Trauma Center NTB. It was conducted using a simulation method with the Rhino Grasshopper application and Open Studio Sketchup. It also involved collecting data and creating 3D input models into the Grasshopper and Open Studio plugin. The next stage was simulating OTTV, Cooling Load, and Photovoltaic in the test room within a year. The optimal PV shading based on the simulation was applied to the facade of the Trauma Center building. The results showed that laying PV on the roof would be more effective within 20 years than on the façade. This is because the efficiency value on the roof is higher than on the facade. The PV system measuring at a distance of 0.8 m on the facade and roof is 4.21% and 8.82% efficient, respectively. The efficiency at a distance of 1 m on the façade and roof is 6.31% and 7.81%, respectively.

Abstract

With the lack of clarity on when the Covid-19 pandemic will end, there is a demand for a new design approach to the configuration of circulation paths in public open spaces. a design approach that can break up the crowd and form a space with a low-density pattern can be a new form of adaptation to new social arrangements and conditions after the pandemic. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research through simulations related to the spatial aspects of the configuration of public open spaces and the activities in them, to see how the form of space and the elements supporting activities in accommodating activities, and predicting what forms of intervention are appropriate in accommodating activities in the new normal period. This study uses an experimental-simulative method through simulation of space syntax on the circulation path through the DephtmapX 0.50, to identify opportunities for regeneration of new designs to respond to the spatial potential of existing urban areas. It can be seen from the results of the space syntax simulation that with the addition of activity spaces and new circulation paths with strong symmetry, it can form a more even distribution of visitors to all parts of public open spaces.

Abstract

Semiotics is a science of signs, which is found daily in public spaces, print media, literary works, and buildings. A building can convey value, story, philosophy, and meaning through signs expressed on its architectural elements. These signs are in form of shape, spatial arrangement, building ornaments, colors, patterns, textures, or other elements. Therefore, this study aims to determine the meaning and message expressed by the architectural form of the Al-Ahdhar Mosque based on Charles Sanders Peirce's Semiotics, which consists of three aspects, namely Representant, Object, and Interpretant with the concept of trichotomy. It was carried out using a descriptive qualitative method to determine more about the observed phenomena. The meaning and messages of the case study were conveyed in form of signs and symbols through architectural elements. The data obtained through observations, interviews, and documentation were translated using Charles Sanders Peirce's Trichotomy semiotics. The modern-style design of the Al-Ahdhar Mosque showed that the forms and architectural elements carry a certain meaning. The results also showed that Charles Sanders Peirce's Trichotomy semiotic theory can be used to reveal meaning through signs. This indicated that signs on building elements have a meaning, and the relationship of meaning, sign, and symbol is from a correlation between signs and omens, which is called the semiosis process.

Abstract

Spatial transformation and building layout of Balinese ethnic dwellings are influenced by the need for residential space and the occupants of the house. The increase in the number of family members in one dwelling impacts increasing the space for living. The development of architectural style as a trend is another factor that changes building layout. This change is a process from the initial state - the spatial and building layout concept of sanga mandala - towards contemporary architecture. These changes are characterized by architectural elements that are subject to change, and the elements that are persistent to change. This research aims to examine the meaning of dualism in the residents of ethnic Balinese residences as a transformation process. The method used in this research is qualitative content analysis, with demographic, economic, and architectural trends approaches and perspectives. The interpretation resulted from the occupants' perceptions of transforming the Balinese ethnic residence in Denpasar. This study's findings are the process of changing the spatial planning and architectural structure of Balinese ethnic houses based on the fundamental concept of dualism in a sanga mandala spatial layout through demographic, economic, and developmental approaches to Balinese architectural trends.
