Abstract

Chemistry learning should not only emphasize theoretical concepts but also connect learning with real environmental problems and sustainability issues. However, most teachers still use generic teaching materials that are less relevant to local potential and contextual learning needs. This community service activity aimed to improve teachers’ understanding of green chemistry, contextual learning, and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) through training on developing green chemistry teaching materials based on coastal local potential. The activity involved members of MGMP Kimia Tanjungpinang and applied a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach combined with project-based activities. The implementation stages included preparation, training, mentoring, and evaluation. Data were collected using competency assessment sheets, observation sheets, product assessment rubrics, and participant response questionnaires administered before and after the activity. The results showed measurable improvements in teachers’ competencies. Teachers’ understanding of green chemistry concepts increased from 68.75% to 100%, the ability to develop contextual teaching materials increased from 68.75% to 100%, competence in integrating coastal local potential into chemistry learning increased from 56.25% to 87.5%, chemical literacy in learning increased from 56.25% to 87.5%, and understanding of the relationship between chemistry learning and SDG 4 increased from 50% to 87.5%. Participants also successfully developed green chemistry teaching materials based on local coastal potential that were ready for classroom use. The activity contributed to SDG 4 by strengthening teachers’ professional competencies and improving the quality of contextual chemistry learning materials. These findings indicate that contextual green chemistry training effectively enhances teachers’ chemical literacy, understanding of SDG 4, and competency in developing meaningful and contextual teaching materials.

Abstract

This community service activity was conducted to improve early childhood learners’ railway safety awareness in Madiun City, where children are frequently exposed to railway environments but have limited understanding of railway safety practices. The activity aimed to introduce age-appropriate railway safety education through community-based socialization conducted at Politeknik Perkeretaapian Indonesia (PPI) Madiun. The participants consisted of 120 early childhood learners, 12 teachers, and 70 parents from several early childhood education institutions in Madiun. The activity was implemented through four stages: preliminary preparation and needs assessment, digital dissemination through WhatsApp and Instagram, experiential learning-based socialization, and reflection and evaluation. Learning activities included storytelling, animated educational videos, interactive discussions, role-play simulations, and demonstrations using miniature railway models. Data were collected using observation sheets, field notes, oral questioning, and feedback questionnaires from teachers and parents. The findings showed measurable improvements in children’s railway safety awareness after the activity. Understanding of railway warning symbols increased from 28% to 87%, awareness of safe behavior near railway tracks increased from 35% to 89%, and the ability to repeat key railway safety messages increased from 22% to 81%. Teachers and parents also reported positive evaluations regarding the relevance and effectiveness of the learning materials. These findings indicate that experiential and participatory learning approaches conducted in a vocational railway environment effectively improve railway safety awareness among early childhood learners and provide a replicable model for community-based railway safety education.

Abstract

Climate change and environmental degradation have become urgent global challenges, marked by the significant rise in average global temperatures due to human activity, industrialization, and carbon emissions. The low level of environmental concern in Indonesia worsens this challenge, as reflected by the Environmental Care Behavior Index (ECBI/ IPRLH) of only 0.57 (low category). Furthermore, only 38% of Indonesian adolescents are actively involved in environmental preservation. Initial observations at Pesantren Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah Medan indicate that high institutional compliance does not fully translate into individual pro-environmental actions by santri (students). This is evidenced by inconsistent waste segregation, reliance on single-use plastics, and limited water conservation. This community service activity aimed to enhance religiosity toward environmentally friendly behavior among adolescent santri. The CBPR model was implemented from July to October 2025 at the pesantren. The results indicated that the santri’s level of religiosity was in the high category across all dimensions, and their pro-environmental behavior was categorized as good to very good, especially concerning waste disposal discipline and water conservation. Spiritual values (such as amanah and ihsan) have reached affective and behavioral stages. However, personal initiatives, such as sorting waste or reducing single-use plastic, require further strengthening. It is concluded that pesantren hold significant potential as a foundation for forming religiously rooted pro-environmental behavior.

Abstract

This community service aimed to help rural culinary MSMEs strengthen their ability to use digital marketing for wider market reach and consistent branding. The program applied a participatory approach through digital literacy training, logo creation, and the use of social media and marketplace platforms. The main beneficiary was Resty Catering & Cake, located in Pesisir Selatan, Indonesia. Activities included on-site training, mentoring, and follow-up monitoring. The results were observed qualitatively and through performance indicators, such as activating two marketplace accounts, publishing promotional content, and initiating online transactions. Within two weeks, the partner recorded five online sales and recruited ten resellers, demonstrating better digital engagement and market access. The results show that digital literacy, combined with technology-based empowerment, has become the primary driver of rural business. The mentoring model introduced here combines branding and digital marketing, offering a practical approach that can be replicated for similar MSMEs to support inclusive economic growth.

Abstract

The livestock subsector in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) contributes 28.51% to the regional GDP and employs 51.4% of the workforce; however, its economic growth remains slow, ranking only seventh among 17 economic sectors. One of the primary causes of this slow growth is low livestock productivity, which is largely attributed to poor feed processing practices that limit nutrient absorption and result in suboptimal average daily weight gain in cattle. To address this root cause, students at Politeknik Pertanian Negeri Kupang introduced Rabal Probiotics to farmers in Rado Village through the Student Community Service Program (KKBM). Rabal Probiotics, a locally developed probiotic containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus casei, improves feed digestion and nutrient absorption, thereby directly enhancing livestock growth rates. The students conducted training activities comprising lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice to increase farmers' understanding and practical skills in producing Rabal Probiotics, promote sustainable livestock practices, and demonstrate successful project-based learning implementation. The results showed that all participating farmers (100%) mastered the theoretical aspects, while practical understanding of proportional scaling increased to 70%.

Abstract

Educational inequality for persons with disabilities in Indonesia remains a major challenge, with approximately 40% of individuals with disabilities never having received formal education, while visual impairment represents the highest disability category, at 64%. Despite the increasing number of Special Education Schools (Sekolah Luar Biasa/SLB), many schools, including SLB Negeri Jember, still rely on conventional and monotonous teaching methods with limited interactive learning facilities, creating a gap between the learning needs of visually impaired students and existing educational solutions. This community service project developed PELITA (Personalized Ethnographic Learning with Interactive Table-Based Audio Game), an audio game–based educational platform designed to improve inclusive learning experiences for visually impaired students. The project applied a participatory community engagement approach involving teachers, students, parents, and school administrators through field observations, focus group discussions, co-design activities, product trials and iterative evaluations. PELITA was developed using the Octalysis Framework for gamification and integrates a joystick, touchpad keyboard, mini PC, stereo speakers, and monitor to support interactive and contextual learning based on real-life scenarios. Product testing involving visually impaired students demonstrated improvements in spatial orientation ability (37.1%), fine motor skills (22.1%), listening ability (24.3%), problem solving(29.2%), self-confidence(36.5%), social interaction(22.4%), and learning motivation (39.1%). These findings indicate that gamification-based assistive technology can effectively support inclusive education and provide adaptive learning experiences for students with visual impairment. Furthermore, PELITA offers a scalable and replicable innovation model that can be implemented in other regions through collaboration among schools, universities, local governments, and communities by adapting ethnographic learning content to local cultural contexts.

Abstract

The increasing number of bullying cases in Indonesian educational environments has a serious impact on children's emotional, social, and creative development. This condition demands interventions that are not only curative but also preventative, by strengthening emotional bonds between children, peers, teachers, and parents. The Nusantara Arts Innovation Program (PISN), implemented in collaboration with the Kupu-Kupu Learning Center in Sidan, Gianyar, Bali, designed the Expressive Innovation Medium (MIE) as a collaborative arts approach that integrates art, design, and psychology to strengthen emotional engagement while encouraging creativity. The main activities included screenings of educational anti-bullying animations and a series of art activities: tie-dye, ecoprinting with natural dyes, paper waste processing, and painting on t-shirts with Balinese art and culture themes that are close to children's daily lives. This community service research used a descriptive qualitative approach through participatory observation, brief interviews with teachers and administrators, and documentation of the work and activity processes that were analyzed thematically. The results showed increased active participation, children's courage to express their opinions, the emergence of spontaneous discussions about bullying, and a warmer, more collaborative, and more supportive learning atmosphere. The resulting works showcased diverse and original explorations of color, shape, and local cultural motifs. Teachers and administrators considered MIE relevant as a medium for dialogue about empathy, diversity, and how to respond constructively to bullying. These findings strengthen the evidence that arts-based interventions and social-emotional learning can be effective preventative strategies to reduce the risk of bullying while fostering creativity, self-confidence, and social connectedness in children in non-formal education settings. Furthermore, the program has produced a model of good practice with the potential to be replicated in other educational institutions through the development of modules, thematic animations, and collaborative arts activity guides.
