Abstract

The student’s critical thinking skills in social studies education in Public Junior High School 14 Bandung is still low. This can be seen from the observation of the researchers, which shows that the students’ critical thinking skills in the superior classes are far more prominent compared to the regular classes. The students'critical thinking skills in the superior classes are not only fixated on the problems in their handbooks, but it also has started to recognize about contextual, and even contemporary issues. Furthermore, the learning method used in the superior classes are actually the same as in the regular classes; the only difference is that students in the regular classes are less able to explore broader information/phenomena. They only absorb information obtained from their handbook. This research tries to analyze the controversial issues model, and this research used problems from the controversial and critical issues. The research method is processed with a quasi-experimental research, with non-probality sampling technique. The controversial issues model is compared to the think pair and shared model. The analysis results from the measurements in the experimental and control class before the treatment, showed that there is no difference between the two. However, there is a difference in the students’ critical thinking skills between before and after the treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is an effectiveness from the controversial issues learning model, which affects students' critical thinking skills in social studies education.

Abstract

With the rise of technology, market manipulation among kids -- the intenful propaganda to skew sales -- has risen significantly as well. Companies advertised as ‘for kids’ are deliberately pushing out content towards these impressionable children to bait them, or rather their parents, into buying kids advertised items. This study recognized, however, that not all parents fall for this scheme and some often deny their children these products. It aimed to study the causes that propelled parents to deny their children these products, and whether the parents felt any guilt after the fact. It was hypothesized that parents who denied products due to monetary concerns would associate guilt with this act, over their inability to pay for all of their child’s wishes, whereas those who denied items for the wellbeing of their child associated no guilt due to their conviction that these steps were for their child’s benefit. The study analyzed publicly available data on parents and their reaction to these constant advertisements and concluded results in support of the hypothesis -- there was a moderately strong association evident between the reason for denial and parental guilt associated as a consequence. The results of this study can help provide insight into the thought processes of parents as well as hint at growing parenting trends, to better inform development of resources.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Traditional communication platforms and virtual digital learning could mitigate the closure of schools during COVID-19 and any other pandemics to enhance effective management of quality education. This study observed the relationship between traditional communication, virtual digital learning and management of quality education in public senior secondary schools in Nigeria. Purposive sampling techniques was used to select 140 principals and 280 teachers from 14 States that have commenced the use of traditional communication platforms and virtual digital learning for teaching students during the lockdown period in Nigeria. Data was collected using Covid-19 Pandemic Issue and Management of Quality Education Questionnaire (CPIMQEQ). The data was analysed using descriptive statistics and t-test statistical analysis. The results revealed that there was significant relationship between traditional communication platforms, virtual digital learning and management of quality education. It was recommended that government should make adequate provision for the use of traditional communication platforms as part of methods of teaching students rather than concentrate on only face-to-face traditional method of teaching to prevent total lockdown of education institution during pandemic so as to improve access to education. Also, government should make provision for necessary tools needed for effective use of virtual digital learning in teaching students and this will in turn help to address problem of school closure during pandemic as well as provision of training and retraining of teacher on digital skill in order to increase the students’ engagement and encouraged interaction towards achieving quality education.
