Abstract

The influence of the English language in a globalized world has been acknowledged internationally. This widespread use underscores the importance of imparting English skills to individuals from a young age. However, recent changes in the Indonesian curriculum reflect ongoing debate, as primary school students are no longer mandated to learn English. This leads to the inquiry “Is English not that important for children?” and “Should we teach English to young learners?”. The study delves into the discourse on teaching English to young learners in Indonesia, aiming to understand English teachers’ perspectives on this matter. Two experienced English teachers who specialize in instructing young learners in Indonesia were engaged using interviews. Employing the narrative inquiry technique, the study seeks a comprehensive exploration of their educational experiences (Baden & Niekerk, 2007). The study's findings reveal a consensus among the teachers that teaching English to young learners in Indonesia has more advantages than drawbacks. Both educators argue that early exposure to the language enhances children's confidence and vocabulary knowledge, fostering a solid foundation for their future endeavors. This insight challenges the recent curriculum change and prompts a reevaluation of the decision to exclude English from the mandatory syllabus for young students. In conclusion, the study advocates for reconsidering the current educational approach in Indonesia, emphasizing the benefits of introducing English to young learners. It highlights the positive impact on children's linguistic development and overall educational trajectory, suggesting that early English education contributes significantly to their long-term success

Abstract

The student's critical thinking skills in Ngada Regency are still relatively low, with an average test score of 44,9. Critical thinking is a fundamental skill that students must possess to face future challenges in the era of global competition. Initial classroom observations indicate that teachers need more facilitation in developing students' critical thinking. Several issues identified include: (a) the provision of information sources is still limited to textbooks, (b) teachers have not facilitated students in asking critical questions (teachers ask more questions, and students answer), (c) teachers lack in providing opportunities for students to conclude in Worksheets or summarize learning outcomes, and (d) student Worksheets mainly involve filling in or explaining terms, lacking opportunities for students to strategize problem-solving. These issues can be addressed through focused and continuous mentoring, necessitating a school learning community. This study investigates the influence of the Community of Lecturers, Teachers, and Colleger (CLTC) on teachers' professional development in enhancing students' critical thinking skills. The study employs a mixed methods case study (MMCS) design to investigate the influence of CLTC on teachers' professional development in improving the critical thinking skills of 8th-grade students in science subjects. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and critical thinking skills tests. Qualitative data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, while quantitative data were analyzed using paired t-tests. The results showed increased teachers' professionalism in enhancing students' critical thinking skills during CLTC activities. Statistical tests also showed significant differences in students' critical thinking skills before and after teachers participated in CLTC, with a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0,015. Classroom observations and sharing during learning evaluations were the most effective activities based on qualitative findings. These findings have implications for universities and schools to create mutually beneficial partnerships to enhance teachers' professionalism and students' experience. The practical implications of this research include recommending that teachers conduct peer teaching observations and sharing sessions within schools routinely. Colleger must also be involved in the learning community at school early in order to form professional teacher candidates earlier

Abstract

This study reveals listening relationship patterns in the information approval process used to improve the quality of learning dialogue, especially in science learning. A qualitative method with a case study approach was used to analyze listening relationship patterns in science learning during one semester. A total of 3 science teachers, 31 students, and two academics involved in lesson study for learning communities were selected to capture a mutual listening relationship pattern in receiving information with a natural performance and not tense when observing. Observation, documentation, and clinical interviews were used as data collection techniques. Video and audio recorders were involved as documentation tools for this study. Transcript-based lesson analysis (TBLA) was included in conducting data analysis. The listening relationship patterns analysis results in classical discussion sessions in cycles 1–3, which tend to have semi-equal listening relationship patterns. Meanwhile, the listening relationship pattern in group discussion sessions in cycles 1 to 3 tends to be the isolated listening relationship group pattern. The shift in the pattern of listening relationships in group discussion sessions is caused by several factors, including student collaboration awareness, heterogeneous composition of students, tasks, and questions that challenge students, and appropriate interruptions of teacher direction. The research results provide a reference for reflection on developing teacher professionalism to improve more effective and meaningful learning.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship is becoming an increasing topic of discussion. It has attracted the attention of academics worldwide due to its beneficial impact on economic and social development worldwide. For this reason, it is essential to stimulate the intention to engage in entrepreneurial endeavors as early as possible, preferably while still a student. Unfortunately, no research has explored the role of higher education, such as universities, as providers and supporters of a supportive environment in fostering entrepreneurial intentions, which can ultimately produce entrepreneurs. Based on these problems, this research examines essential factors such as entrepreneurship education and lecturers' competencies, which influence students' entrepreneurial intentions. Using a quantitative method involving 314 respondents through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis, this research concludes that entrepreneurship education and lecturers' personal competencies positively and significantly influence students' entrepreneurial intention. This research also offers educational institutions and the government an increase in students' intentions to become entrepreneurs. On the other hand, this study suggests that both the mixed methods approach and longitudinal models should be expanded to provide a more thorough knowledge of the readiness of individuals to engage in entrepreneurial enterprise.

Abstract

This study intends to analyze the religiosity of high school students using the Glock-Stark theory and its impact on curriculum development and Islamic Education learning. The research utilized a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design. The data show that the level of religiosity among students differs. The ANOVA test indicates that there are substantial differences in religiosity levels across 9 high schools in West Java. Research shows that variations in students' levels of religiosity are shaped by internal factors like cognitive abilities and external factors like the religious environment of families, schools, and communities, including the characteristics of teachers. The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive examination of both internal and external factors influencing religiosity and its specific focus on the implications for curriculum development in Islamic Education. This study's findings have significant implications for curriculum development and school physical activity instruction, encompassing planning, execution, and learning assessment

Abstract

Success in learning mathematics can be measured through five aspects called the five strands of mathematical proficiency. These five aspects need to be taught fairly, resulting in a change in students' mathematical attitudes where this aspect is still minimally looked at and researched. Therefore, the research aims to analyze changes in students' mathematical dispositions by reviewing the role of e-comics in Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). This context-based mathematics learning approach is assumed to provide meaningful learning for students. This mixed-methods research with a sequential explanatory research design was carried out on 30 elementary school students by combining quantitative data collection and analysis techniques with qualitative data support. The research showed that using e-comics in RME learning significantly improved students' mathematical dispositions with a large effect size (Cohen’s effect size = 0,98). In a qualitative review involving data triangulation, evidence was found that using e-comics in RME learning has a role in facilitating the development of each student indicator, as evidenced in the high students’ enthusiasm or response in learning both in observations, questionnaires, and documentation studies. In this way, it is hoped that this innovation can be researched and developed further on a more diverse scale and content. In addition, this research provides further opportunities for research and teacher training related to developing RME learning designs and e-comics in learning.
