Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the EFL learners’ writing anxiety. Being more specific, the researcher was interested to measure the EFL learners’ writing anxiety levels, to find out types of writing anxieties (i.e., Somatic Anxiety, Cognitive Anxiety, Avoidance Behavior), and elaborate the triggering factors of writing anxiety. The research subjects were 28students who registered for Essay Writing in English Study Program; Two different questionnaires were administered to gather the data; SLWAI questionnaire designed by Cheng (2004) and another questionnaire developed by Zhang (2011). To investigate the level of writing anxiety and its types, the data from the SLWAI questionnaire were analyzed and calculated to find the mean. Moreover, to find out the causes of writing anxiety, the data from the second questionnaire were ranked from 1-7 based on the most chosen items. The findings showed that students experience high level of anxiety (M=65.86, >65). Then the most common type of anxiety was Cognitive Anxiety, and the mean score is 23.9 in which it was the highest of all the types. Furthermore, linguistics difficulties (82%), lack of topical knowledge (68%), and insufficient writing technique (60%) were the dominant sources of students’ writing anxiety

Abstract

Arbeit, as one of the themes of culture is considered relevant and representative in the study of foreign literatures. Three german novels that were written in the second decade after reunification (2000–2010) and that have Arbeit as their main theme were selected as the material object of this research: Das Jahr der Wunder by Reiner Merkel (2001), Wir schlafen nicht by Kathrin Röggla (2004), and Mobbing by Annette Pehnt (2007). This research's main goal is to obtain a greater understanding of Arbeit as presented in these three novels, and to see how authors have responded to dynamic developments within the workplace in Germany, particularly since reunification. This study utilized a perspective of sociology of literature by summarizing various theories that mainly related to the conception Arbeit to become a major foothold in elucidating various aspects based on the objectives of this study.This research shows that, Normal workplace relations have slowly shifted to anomalous workplace relations, and as a result workers have lost an ever increasing number of rights. Workers have been consciously exploited within the workplace, and the social inequalities within the workforce have challenged not only workers' dignity, but also their very existence. As such, the three writers discussed here have promoted a more humanized Arbeit—one which recognizes human dignity as central to its conceptual framework—for modern society.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the verb conjugation process of German, Bahasa, and English. This study used a contrastive analysis which is one of approaches in applied linguistics. Data consisted of words and sentences in German, Bahasa, and English, and were analyzed descriptively. This article is a preliminary study which aims to do need analysis in developing German grammar book based contrastive analysis approach. Finding shows that there are 4 factors causing verb of a sentence should be conjugated: 1) Verb Conjugation Adjusted with Person as Subject,  2) Verb Conjugation Adjusted with active-passive voice sentence, 3) Verb Conjugation Adjusted with tenses of sentence, 4) Verb Conjugation Adjusted with quantifier factor of sentence subject.

Abstract

 The purpose of this study was to compare Chinese and Indonesian passive sentences. This article belongs to the description of qualitative research. The research methods used in this paper are description and contrastive analysis method.  The data source of this research is the Chinese and Indonesian references. The data of this research are in the form of descriptions of Mandarin passive sentences and Indonesian passive sentences. Data collection techniques in this research is to collect data relevant to research from various sources then arranged, analyzed, and drawn conclusions. First of all, describe the syntactic structures of Chinese and ndonesian passive sentences. Then comparing the syntactic structures of Chinese and ndonesian passive sentences to find out the difference of syntactic structures between Chinese and Indonesian passive sentences. The same point between Chinese and Indonesian passive syntactic structures is that both languages can change from active sentences to passive sentences, and sometimes there is no promoter. The difference between Chinese and Indonesian passive sentences lies in the position of the promoter; the morphology of predicate verb of Chinese passive sentences and Chinese active sentences are same, while the morphology of predicate verb of Indonesian Passive Sentences active sentences is different; and passive sentences in Indonesian can carry single verb. The predicate verb of the passive sentence in Chinese cannot be a single verb.

Abstract

Compounding is a common word-formation process in Bahasa Indonesia (BI) and English (EN) as it can be found in constructions of the words headline, headmaster, and kepala berita, kepala sekolah in BI, which are widely used by the speakers of the languages. This study scrutinizes the constructions and the senses of lexeme HEAD and KEPALA from contrastive linguistic perspective. It aims at describing (1) The constructions of compound words containing lexeme HEAD and (2) the extended senses of lexeme HEAD in the compound word constructions in BI and EN. The data, taken from Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia and Cambridge Online Dictionary, were collected and analyzed using contrastive analysis. The data were collected and analyzed through observation and close reading techniques. The discussion highlighted the similarities and differences of the constructions and extended senses of compound words containing lexeme HEAD. In BI, lexeme kepala is combined with nouns, adjectives, while in English lexeme HEAD is combined with nouns, adjectives, gerunds, and prepositions. In BI the extended senses of lexeme head refer to leader, hair, the most important, the tip of things, and personality, while there are six extended senses in EN, namely leader, hair, the most important part, the tip of things, personality, and movement. The extensions show human creativity to produce and comprehend metaphors and metonymy in context to express ideas that are abstract with something more familiar and concrete

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing and contrasting sentence pattern differences in both English and Sigulai languages. The study intends to find out the differences in sentence pattern between English and Sigulai language and how the sentence pattern of two languages are different. This current study was conducted by employing the qualitative method by using the contrastive analysis approach. Purposive sampling was used to select samples comprising two native-Simeulue students studying in Banda who speaks Sigulai. The findings show that there were contrast differences in verbal and nominal sentence patterns between English and Sigulai. Moreover, it can be concluded that Sigulai language has a non-configurational sentence pattern as many other Austronesian languages in Aceh and Indonesia in general.

Abstract

This research explored the use of the ICARE Model to studying the writing ability at the Senior high school in Parepare. ICARE includes five essential elements of a good learning experience, can be applied to children, teenagers, and parents, namely Introduction, Connection, Application, Reflection, and Extension. This research involved a population from Senior high school in Parepare in the academic year 2015/2016. The students consist of two classes, an experimental class, and a control class. Each class consists of 36 students. This research utilized a cluster random sampling technique to select the sample. The instrument used in this research is the writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. The research reveals that there was a significant increase in students writing ability. This finding indicates that the mean score of the post-test of the experimental group is getting much better than the control class. It meant that using ICARE developed the students' ability in writing, and the writing component increased the highest is in the vocabulary aspect.

Abstract

Fostering ecological awareness in studying economics is important, bearing in mind that business today is to maintain the sustainability of the earth’s resources. This study examines Heinrich Böll’s “The Balek Scales” and Tayeb Salih’s “A Handful of Dates” to see whether the two short stories are suitable for teaching business and environmental ethics to both students of English and economics. Using content analysis method, this library research uses principles in sustainable business ethics to interpret the two stories. Data analysis shows that both stories exemplify concepts such as autonomy, integrity, justice, professionalism, and environmental awareness. This study concludes that the short stories discussed provide pedagogical tools to teach the basic concepts of professional and environmental ethics in the business world all students today need to know.

Abstract

Lewis gives some type of writing errors. Those type of errors are omission, overuse, meaning, and errors related to forms. The aim of this study is to explain kinds of writing errors, as proposed by Lewis, occurs in language acquisition of English language in elementary school level. In this research researcher mainly used the qualitative research design in the strategy of descriptive. The subject in this research is writing errors. Meanwhile, the data or object is written language related to English language which is taken from elementary students note in English subject. The students are vary from grade four to grade six. The method and technique in collecting data is metode simak or by reading attentively specifically in noting technique and the technique for analyzing data is metode agih or distributional method. Research instrument is human instrument. Based on the findings, the kinds of errors which occurs in students writing are omission type of writing errors, overuse type of writing errors, meaning type of writing errors, and related forms type of writing errors. The writing errors that mostly occurred is related forms of writing errors. In the findings, the related forms writing error which found is specifically in pronunciation and spelling.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate problems faced by Indonesian students in learning German translation subject. This study uses a qualitative approach with the aim of discovering the problems experienced by students in-depth during the translation course. Data collection techniques used were interviews and observation. The research respondents were students majoring in German language education who were programming courses in translation. After the data is collected, the data is analyzed descriptively qualitatively. Data that has been analyzed are then verified again by conducting Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to several students. The purpose of this FGD is to check the data collected. Finding shows that there are several difficulties or problems faced by students during their translation courses, both related to the lack of vocabulary, the lack of mastery of source language culture, and the low understanding of translation material. However, the most fundamental problem is the lack of mastery of the source language culture
