Abstract

This study analyzes the meaning of Luna Torashyngu's Last Melodi novel. The theory used is the semiotic Charles Sanders Peirce focusing on the meaning of icons, indices, and symbols in the novel Melodi Pertama. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and the technique of collecting data from the Last Melody was obtained by reading and taking notes. The analysis technique uses the Peirce sign typology technique based on icons, indexes, and symbols. In research into the analysis of the meaning of the Last Melodi novel by Luna Torashyngu, many signs that resemble, existence causes cause and effect, and have been agreed upon. The results of the study are an icon as an object that resembles its original shape as GPS, Rina's photo, and Jeannie's photo. The index as a causal relationship was found in the form of fainting, fire, road signs, smoke, taxis, pale faces, and ambulances. Symbols are conventions that are shown in the form of songs at night, roosters crowing, horns, police logos, secret writings, stage lights, applause, stately houses, black, blue, and red. The results of the Last Melody novel research found emotive meanings, connotative meanings, and proctical meanings.Penelitian ini menganalisis makna pada novel Melodi Terakhir karya Luna Torashyngu. Teori yang digunakan adalah semiotik Charles Sanders Peirce berfokus pada makna ikon, indeks, dan simbol dalam novel Melodi Terakhir. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan teknik pengumpulan data novel Melodi Terakhir diperoleh dengan cara mebaca dan mencatat. Teknik analisis menggunakan teknik tipologi tanda Peirce berdasarkan ikon, indeks, dan simbol. Dalam penelitian analisis makna novel Melodi Terakhir karya Luna Torashyngu banyak ditemukan tanda-tanda yang menyerupai, keberadaan menimbulkan sebab akibat, dan telah disepakati. Hasil penelitian adalah ikon sebagai suatu objek yang menyerupai bentuk aslinya ditunjukkan sebagai GPS, foto Rina, dan foto Jeannie. Indeks sebagai hubungan sebab akibat yang ditemukan berupa pingsan, api, rambu jalan, asap, taksi, wajah pucat, dan ambulans. Simbol adalah tanda bersifat konvensi yang ditunjukkan berupa nyanyian di malam hari, ayam berkokok, suara klakson, logo polisi, tulisan rahasia, lampu panggung, tepuk tangan, rumah megah, warna hitam, warna biru, dan warna merah. Hasil penelitian novel Melodi Terakhir ditemukan makna emotif, makna konotatif, dan makna proktikal.Kata kunci : analisis makna, ikon, indeks, simbol

Abstract

This study examines the symbols that used, the meanings of symbol, and the roles of symbol in The Queen of Spades short story. To identify the symbol, the researcher used the theory by Griffith; public symbol and private symbol. To reveal the meanings of symbol, the researcher used the theory of ‘symbolic reference’ by Whitehead. Then, to find out the roles of symbol in building the story, the researcher analyzed through plot, character, setting, and theme in the story. The method of this study used descriptive qualitative method and the data of this study based on words, sentences, and narration which reflected symbols throughout the story. Furthermore, the result of the research showed cards of three, seven, aces categorized as public symbol and the queen of spades categorized as private symbol. The number three reflected to love triangle which happened between Hermann, Lizaveta, and Lizaveta’a husband. Then, seven reflected Hermann who obsessed to know the secret of lucky card. At last, aces reflected to karma that must be accepted by Hermann and the Countess. Meanwhile, the queen of spades as private symbol reflected to the Countess Anna Fedotovna and as a symbol of the key issue on the secret of lucky cards in the story. Then, the roles of symbols reflected through plot that showed to express the disquieting effect, character that showed to express the strength qualities, setting that showed to express the strength atmosphere, and theme that showed to express the wisdom lessons.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the types of rejective behaviours portrayed in Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country novel and to discuss the portrayal of African-American characters’ responses to rejective behaviours. This research is a descriptive research that uses a mimetic approach and multicultural criticism to conduct the investigation. The data source of the study is Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country novel. The data are acquired from the narration and dialogues related to the mistreatments toward the African-American characters and their responses that are suitable to the criteria of Allport’s theory of rejective behaviours and Mellor’s responses to racism theory. The results show that verbal rejection (antilocution), discrimination, and physical attack are all portrayed in this novel albeit with different frequencies for each African-American character.  It is also discovered that the characters have depicted defensive response, controlled response, and confrontational response in dealing with rejective behaviours.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini membahas tentang alih kode dan campur kode bahasa Arab pada pembelajaran di Pondok Pesantren Ibadurrahman. Tujuan penelitian yaitu: menemukan bentuk alih kode dan campur kode bahasa Arab yang terjadi pada pembelajaran di Pondok Pesantren Ibadurrahman dan menguraikan faktor-faktor terjadinya alih kode dan campur kode bahasa Arab yang terjadi pada pembelajaran di Pondok Pesantren Ibadurrahman. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian lapangan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dekskriptif. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah bahasa Arab pada tuturan guru dan santri di Pondok Pesantren Ibadurrahman. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah pengajar dan santri kelas IX Madrasah Tsanawiyyah Ibadurrahman dalam pembelajaran Muthala’ah, di Pondok Pesantren Ibadurrahman. Lokasi penelitian ini di Pondok Modern Ibadurrahman beralamatkan di Jalan K.H.A. Tsani Karim, L III, Blok C, Kecamatan Tenggarong Seberang, Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara, Provinsi Kalimantan Timur. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan meliputi: Observasi, rekam, teknik catat. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini yaitu: reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Adapun hasil penelitian ini yaitu: alih kode dan campur kode bahasa Arab pada pembelajaran di Pondok Pesantren Ibadurrahman. Peristiwa yang terjadi berupa alih kode dalam wujud intern dengan bentuk alih kode bahasa Arab kiasan ke bahasa Arab fashih. Alih kode ekstern dengan bentuk alih kode bahasa arab ke bahasa Indonesia. Campur kode yang terjadi berupa campur kode ke dalam berupa sisipan kata bahasa Arab kiasan ke bahasa Arab fashih dan campur kode ke luar berupa sisipan kata, frasa, dan klausa. Kata Kunci: alih kode bahasa Arab, campur kode bahasa Arab, sosiolinguistik

Abstract

This study aimed to identify types of rejective behavior that depicted in Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and analyzed how the African-American slaves react toward these rejective behaviors. To conduct this research, the researcher used qualitative method, content analysis approach and multicultural criticism. The data source of this research was The Underground Railroad novel written by Colson Whitehead. The data were taken in the forms of words, sentences, clauses, phrases and narration that related to act of rejective behaviour experienced by African-American slaves and their reaction toward this rejective behaviour that suitable with Allport’s rejective behaviour theory and responses to rejective behavior theory. As analyzed, the results showed that all types of rejective behaviors were depicted in the novel. First, verbal rejection where in the action there were an indication of verbally insult like name calling, making fun of cultural makers and joking about physical attribute. Second, discrimination where in the action there were an indication of segregation and unfairly treatment between whites and blacks. Last, physical attack where in the action there were the indications of violence acts. Furthermore, the result also showed how African-American slaves react to these rejective behaviors that they experienced.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types and the purposes of conversational implicature uttered by all characters in In The Heart of The Sea movie by using pragmatics approach. The design of this research is qualitative research employing content analysis approach that focused on textual investigation. The data of this research is utterances, which contains conversational implicature spoken by the characters in that movie. This research has one data source which is the movie script of In The Heart of The Sea movie. The data of this research are categorized as types of conversational implicature are analyzed based on Grice’s theory (1975) and the purposes of conversational implicature used theory by Brown and Levinson (1978). The result of this research shows that two types of conversational implicature are found in the utterances of the characters in that movie, they are particularized conversational implicature and generalized conversational implicature. Five purposes of conversational implicature also found in this research, they are to protect speaker itself, to show power and politeness, to give information, to entertain the audiences (humorous) and to have lack specific information.

Abstract

AbstractStuttering is a speech disorder in which repetition and prolongation of syllables, sound, and phrase interfere with fluency. Someone who experiences stuttering will have a hard time to start the word because of disruption in repetition, vocals and articulation involve the throat, palate, tongue, lips, and teeth. Stuttering may be worse when the person is excited, tired or under stress, or when feeling self-conscious, hurried or pressured. A situation such as speaking in front of a group or talking to the phone can be particularly difficult for people who stutter. As a reflection of real life, a movie can also contain the phenomena of stuttering such as in Rocket Science movies. This research aimed to describe the types of stuttering and also the consequences of being stuttering in social life that experienced by Hal Hefner in Rocket Science movies. This research was conducted by using content analysis qualitative method. The data were generated from movie and movie script in the form of utterances, dialogues, words, and conversations. The result of this research shows that there are ninety-five data which are indicated as the types of stuttering experienced by Hal Hefner in Rocket Science movie. Besides, it was also found the consequences of being stuttering in social life experienced by Hal Hefner in the movie. The researcher shows that there are twelve data of consequences that the researcher found in the movie. The most common consequence that the researcher found in the film is fear to talk.  AbstrakGagap adalah gangguan berbicara yang mana terjadinya pengulangan dan perpanjangan suku kata, suara, dan frasa yang dapat menganggu kefasihan. Seseorang yang mengalami gagap akan mengalami kesulitan untuk memulai kata karena gangguan dalam pengulangan, vokal, dan artikulasi yang melibatkan tenggorokan, langit-langit mulut, lidah bibir, dan gigi. Gagap akan lebih buruk ketika bersemangat, lelah atau dibawah tekanan, atau ketika merasa sadar diri, tergesa-gesa atau tertekan. Situasi ketika berbicara didepan kelompok atau berbicara di telepon dapat menjadi sangat sulit bagi orang yag gagap. Sebagai cerminan dari dunia nyata, sebuah film juga mengandung fenomena kegagapan seperti dalam film Rocket Science. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis gagap dan juga konsekuensi dari kegagapan dalam kehidupan sosial yang dialami oleh Hal Hefner dalam film Rocket Science. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan analisis isi kualitatif. Data dihasilkan dari skrip film dan film dalam bentuk ucapan, dialog, kata-kata dan percakapan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada Sembilan puluh lima data yang diidentifikasi sebagai jenis gagap yang dialami oleh Hal Hefner dalam film Rocket Science. Selain itu, ditemukan juga konsekuensi kegagapan dalam kehidupan sosial yang dialami Hal Hefner dalam film tersebut. Peneliti menunjukkan bahwa ada dua belas data dari konsekuensi yang ditemukan oleh peneliti di dalam film. Konsekuensi yang paling banyak ditemukan dalam film tersebut adalah takut untuk berbicara.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the characters of the Dunbroch Royal Family members which consists of Merida, Queen Elinor, King Fergus, Harris, Hubert and Hamish  as well as their role in the plot of the Brave (2009) film. There are two data sources in this research. First is the Brave (2009) film, and the second is the script of this film itself. The data then categorized by using Reams’s characterization. The role of the characters the connected wirh Kenney’s plot development. The result of this research show that Dunbroch Royal Family member characters consist of four different kind of characters and all of them except for King Fergus have a significant role in the plot of the story.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find the depression symptoms of Virginia Woolf as the author portrayed in the characters Septimus Warren Smith and Clarissa Dalloway in Mrs Dalloway novel. It could be seen from the analysis of the data from biographical information of Virginia Woolf, narrations and utterances of the major characters Septimus and Clarissa. In order to determine the depression symptoms, Beck’s cognitive theory of depression was used in this research. This research belonged to qualitative method. The data sources were Mrs Dalloway novel and the biographies of Virginia Woolf. The data were the biographical information of Virginia Woolf, narrations and utterances in the novel refers to Woolf’s depression symptoms portrayed in the characters Septimus and Clarissa. The finding showed the depression symptoms of Virginia Woolf as were portrayed in Septimus such as negative expectation, self blame and self criticism, paralysis of the will, avoidance, escapist, and withdrawal wishes, suicidal wishes, loss of appetite, sleep disturbance, loss of libido, and hallucination.Meanwhile, the depression symptoms that were portrayed in Clarissa such as dejected mood, negative feeling toward self, low self evaluation, delusion of worthlessness, and suicidal wishes.
