Abstract

Communication was the foundation of human interaction through language, and sociolinguistics studied how language worked in society, including how speakers employed dysphemism to express social identity, emotion, or intention through harsh or offensive language choices in specific contexts. This research examined the dysphemism expressions uttered by PJ and Josie as the main characters in Bottoms (2023) film, using the theory from Allan and Burridge (1991) to identify eight types of dysphemism and to describe the seven motives of dysphemism used in the main characters’ utterances. This research used a qualitative descriptive method to display and analyze the data, and found a total of 76 data in the main characters’ utterances. There were only five types of dysphemism identified within the characters’ sentences: obscenity with 54 data, dysphemistic epithets with 14 data, profanity with 3 data, “-ist” dysphemism with 3 data, and dysphemistic euphemism with 2 data. On the other hand, there were only six motives: to humiliate with 11 data, to express strong emotion with 26 data, to emphasize with 18 data, to state a bad situation with 7 data, to show astonishment with 8 data, and to create humor/show intimacy with 6 data. The findings revealed that dysphemistic expressions used by the main characters were not solely intended to insult but served a variety of communicative purposes, with expressing anger and adding emphasis being the dominant motives. The main characters’ utterances illustrated how dysphemism worked with diverse motives in casual conversations, highlighting its role beyond mere offense to expressing emotion.

Abstract

Pemerolehan bahasa pada anak terjadi secara alamiah. Seiring dengan pertambahan usia, kematangan alat ucap, kondisi organ pendengaran, serta tidak ada masalah pada sistem neuromuscular, maka seorang anak akan mampu memproduksi bahasa. Seorang anak bernama Kenneth telah mampu melafalkan dan membedakan rumus bangun ruang, di usianya yang belum genap dua tahun. Selain itu, dia juga dapat membedakan fungsi organ dalam manusia seperti jantung, paru-paru, dan ginjal. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan faktor pemerolehan bahasa pada Kenneth Kalkulus. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian studi kepustakaan dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah tuturan Kenneth Kalkulus dari video-video yang diunggah oleh TikTok @imchika21, sepanjang tahun 2023 dengan penonton mencapai angka jutaan. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian menggunakan metode simak dengan teknik dasar sadap dan teknik lanjutan berupa SBLC dan teknik catat. Selanjutnya analisis data yang digunakan adalah metode agih dengan menggunakan teknik dasar BUL. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pemerolehan bahasa Kenneth Kalkulus dipengaruhi oleh faktor lingkungan keluarga dan faktor perkembangan otak dan kecerdasan.

Abstract

This research analyzes the forms and meanings of hyperbolic expressions found in the lyrics of the album A Beautiful Blur by LANY. It employs a descriptive qualitative method with Claridge’s (2011) theory of hyperbole as the main theoretical framework, which categorizes hyperbole into seven forms such as single word hyperbole, phrasal hyperbole, clausal hyperbole, numerical hyperbole, the role of superlative, comparison, and repetition. The data were sourced from 13 songs on the album and collected through lyrical analysis. The study found data of hyperbolic expressions, divided into six forms, phrasal hyperboles, clausal hyperboles, single-word hyperboles, numerical hyperboles, comparison hyperboles, and the role of superlative. The findings of this research show that hyperbole in the lyrics of A Beautiful Blur serves as an effective expressive tool for conveying deep emotions. Moreover, the use of hyperbole in this album does not merely beautify the lyrics linguistically but plays a crucial role in reinforcing the emotional meanings conveyed, such as heartbreak, longing, uncertainty in love, and self-acceptance. The songwriter prefers a poetic approach to expressing emotions by using more than one word to create exaggerated effects that are not realistic but possess strong expressive power.Key Word: Expression, Figurative Language, Hyperbole, Lyric

Abstract

The joint meeting of Congress in Washington, DC, is a congress used by Benjamin Netanyahu to seek US support, defend himself, and also convey his ideology regarding Israel's aggression against Palestine. the main focus of this research is to see how a speech can impact the socio-culture that exists in society in the economic, political, and cultural aspects. This research is taken from Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the Joint Congress meeting in Washington, DC, 2024, which is taken from words and phrases, and by using the theory of one of the dimensions of critical discourse analysis from Norman Fairclough, namely, socio-cultural. The method of the research is qualitative as an instrument. The result of this research shows that language functions not only as a medium of communication but also as a tool of power to shape perceptions, justify actions, and influence public opinion. In his speech, Benjamin Netanyahu constructed a narrative framing Israel’s action against Palestine as a truth based on religious texts, while presenting peace as a rhetorical strategy to gain U.S. support and legitimize his political agenda. This research provides an understanding of language in the socio-cultural dimension and shows how Netanyahu uses political discourse as an instrument of power to justify Israeli aggression against Palestine and respond to international criticism.

Abstract

Novel sebagai salah satu bentuk karya sastra yang mampu menggali kompleksitas kepribadian dan psikologi manusia secara mendalam, sehingga menarik untuk dikaji melalui pendekatan psikologi sastra. Salah satu teori yang relevan untuk mengkaji permasalahan tersebut adalah psikoanalisis Carl Gustav Jung. Novel 49 Hari Kisah Penantang Gelombang merupakan objek yang berpotensi mengungkap struktur kepribadian tokoh-tokoh dalam cerita. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan struktur kepribadian tokoh utama I, baik struktur kesadaran maupun ketidaksadaran dengan menggunakan psikoanalisis Carl Gustav Jung. Jenis penelitian ini adalah studi pustaka dengan pendekatan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian diambil dari kalimat dan paragraf yang terdapat dalam sumber data yaitu novel 49 Hari Kisah Penantang Gelombang karya Nuril Basri. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik baca dan catat. Teknik analisis data penelitian ini menggunakan kajian psikoanalisis Carl Gustav Jung melalui langkah-langkah analisis yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Struktur kesadaran tokoh Aku terdiri atas tipologi-tipologi kepribadian yang terbentuk dari sikap jiwa dan fungsi jiwa. Terdapat tujuh tipologi kepribadian pada tokoh Aku, yaitu: mind-introversion, mind-extroversion, feeling-introversion, feeling-extroversion, sensory introversion, sensory extroversion, dan introversion-intuition. Tipologi kepribadian yang paling aktif pada tokoh Aku adalah introversion-feeling. (2) Struktur alam bawah sadar tokoh Aku terdiri atas alam bawah sadar pribadi dan alam bawah sadar kolektif. Alam bawah sadar pribadi tokoh Aku muncul dalam bentuk kenangan-kenangan buruk yang pernah terjadi padanya. Alam bawah sadar kolektif tokoh Aku terbentuk karena adanya 5 arketipe, yaitu: persona, shadow, anima, dan self.

Abstract

ABSTRAKBahasa merupakan sebuah hal penting dalam kehidupan manusia untuk berinteraksi satu sama lain. Sebagian orang hanya mengucapkan apa yang mereka inginkan dan terkadang menggunakan kata-kata yang tidak sopan. Penggunaan kata-kata tidak sopan oleh mereka adalah untuk mengejek orang lain, dan kata-kata tersebut tidak nyaman didengar oleh orang lain. Beberapa faktor menyebabkan orang bertindak tidak sopan, terutama dalam ucapan mereka, kekuasaan, usia, dan cara-cara lain yang membuat orang berpikir mereka memiliki lebih banyak kekuatan daripada yang lain. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, terdapat sebuah teori yang berfokus pada bagaimana orang menggunakan kata-kata tidak sopan sebagai strategi dalam berkomunikasi. Strategi ketidaksopanan yang dikemukakan oleh Jonathan Culpeper digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk menjelaskan bagaimana ketidaksopanan digambarkan dalam film. Penelitian ini berfokus pada Film Fury (2014). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana tokoh utama menggunakan strategi ketidaksantunan dalam percakapan, yaitu teknik strategi ketidaksantunan negatif. Don sebagai tokoh utama lebih banyak menggunakan strategi ketidaksantunan negatif dengan merendahkan, mencemooh, dan menyerang ruang pribadi orang lain sebagai strateginya untuk mendapatkan kekuasaan ketika berbicara dengan orang lain. Kata kunci: bahasa, tuturan, kata-kata tidak sopan, strategi ketidaksantunan, Fury(2014)ABSTRACTLanguage is an important thing in human life to interact with each other. Some people only speak anything that they want and sometimes use impolite words. The use of impolite words by them is to mock others, and those words are not comfortable to hear by others. Several factors cause people to act impolite, especially in their utterances, power, age, and other ways that make people think they have more power than others. According to that, there is a theory that focuses on how people use impolite words as a strategy in communication. Impoliteness strategies proposed by Jonathan Culpeper are used in this research to explain how impoliteness is portrayed in movies. This research focuses on Fury Movie (2014). The results of this study show how the main character uses impoliteness strategies in conversation, namely negative impoliteness strategies. Don, as the main character, mostly uses negative impoliteness strategies technique by condescending, mocking, and invading others' personal space as his strategies when gaining power when speaking with others.Keywords: language, utterance, impolite words, impoliteness strategies, Fury(2014)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the anxiety and defense mechanism depicted in Puss as the main character from the novel Puss in Boots: the last Wish using theory of anxiety and defense mechanism from Sigmund Freud. The researcher employed descriptive qualitative method within psychoanalysis approach. The research data are words, phrases, and sentences referring to the Puss’s experinces of anxiety and defense mechanism that collected through reading, highlighting and note-taking. The results of this study show that Puss experiences anxiety namely: realistic anxiety from his environment and the Big Bad Wolf; neurotic anxiety from the thought of Big Bad Wolf would punishing him; and moral anxiety from violating moral codes. Then, Puss defense mechanisms to cope with his anxiety were: repression through running away and gaining comfort from Dog; denial to reject bitter reality; sublimation by change his hesitation into positive mindset; rationalization by justifying his action; and compensation to surpass his weakness in other area. Therefore, these mechanisms are able to help Puss getting out of his fearful state and eventually step forward to live his final life bravely.

Abstract

Literary works are created for enjoyment and as a means of authorship. Mommy ASF's novel "Layangan Putus" describes a strange problem in household life experienced by a woman as a wife and mother. The novel was very famous at the beginning of 2022 and has attracted much attention of Indonesian public in particular to the problems experienced by the main woman in the story, named Kinan. The study aims to describe the reader's response to the female protagonist in Mommy ASF's novel "Layangan Putus" through a literary reception study. This research is a kind of field research with a qualitative descriptive approach and using the Sinkrois reception method. The research data is a survey of readers from Eastern Kalimantan, in Samarinda Seberang district, with 20 respondents. The results of the interview were subsequently submitted and a summary withdrawal was made from the literary reception analysis. In this study the object used is the reader's response to the novel through the results of the interview.Based on the results of the research concluded the reaction of most of the respondents to the novel "Layangan Putus" by Mommy ASF assumed that the main character of the woman in the novel is inherent a strong, wise, self-sufficient and patient attachment in the face of the test. In the analysis of the attachment, the main characters of women belong to the round characters who have a good character, firm, religious, but have a soft weak side easy to frail in silence which makes her more likely to mimic complex life. It was revealed to readers as proof that readers succeeded in accepting, appreciating and giving statements of admiration for the main character of the woman in the novel "Layangan Putus" by Mommy ASF.

Abstract

In a world where not all desires can be fulfilled, Ariel attempts to overcome those limitations in any way she can. The Little Mermaid (2023) tells the story of a young mermaid who dreams of living in the human world. Her desire for acceptance and curiosity about life on land drive her to defy the norms and rules of the underwater kingdom. Through the narrative of this story, this study aims to analyze Ariel’s fulfillment of needs based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, ranging from physiological needs to self-actualization. Additionally, the study explores the application of this theory in examining character development in literary works. This research uses qualitative content analysis to investigate Ariel’s psychological experiences and her character development. Characterization theory and plot structure are utilized to trace Ariel’s character transformation and reveal how each stage of need manifests throughout the storyline. The results indicate that Ariel successfully fulfills all five levels of needs, with the need for love and belonging emerging as the most dominant driving force behind her decisions and transformation. Her strong attachment to the human world and longing for acceptance lead her to take significant risks, which allow her to fulfill her needs progressively, from the most fundamental to the highest level of self-actualization.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bentuk, makna dan fungsi onomatope pada Webtoon 'Who's mr. President?' Karya S.M.S. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Data diambil dari Webtoon dan sumber data berasal dari keseluruhan 68 episode Webtoon 'Who's Mr. President?' Karya S.M.S. Metode pengambilan data yang digunakan adalah teknik studi pustaka dan dokumentasi. Peneliti menggunakan metode padan dan agih untuk melakukan analisis bentuk, makna, dan fungsi dari onomatope. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat empat bentuk onomatope dalam Webtoon 'Who's Mr. President?'. Di antaranya ditemukan 4 onomatope suara hewan, 5 onomatope suara alam, 93 onomatope suara manusia, dan 64 onomatope aneka ragam imitasi suara. Kemudian, terdapat 4 makna kontekstual yang terkandung di dalam Webtoon 'Who's Mr. President?', yaitu makna kontekstual waktu, suasana hati, situasi, dan tempat. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan 3 dari 4 fungsi yaitu fungsi menambah informasi pada sebuah tulisan, fungsi memberikan kesan yang kuat bagi pembaca dan fungsi memaksimalkan realitas dalam suatu peristiwa. Kemudian, terdapat anomali onomatope suara manusia yang direpresentasikan oleh karakter hewan dalam Webtoon 'Who's Mr. President?' Karya S.M.S.
