Abstract

ABSTRACT: “The Myths of Mother Representations from Time to Time”. In the past, mother gained the prominent place in human life, because she was regarded as the subject, the leader, the goddess, the source of life with great power, and other high positions. Differences in natural conditions, changes in social, and cultural dynamics have caused differences in typology, function, and meaning of mother from time to time in each place, both in the East and in the West, so that there is a certain stereotype and myths on mother figure. Representation is something that is deliberately created or held with the aim to represent an item, so that has the characteristics of whatever it represents. This study was intended to examine the grouping of maternal representations, the changes of the stereotypes, and myths of mother figure from time to time by using the method of historical literature review. Mothers have always been portrayed as a figure that is in touch with nature, life, and fertility. At first, the mother was considered as the only source of life that blends with the universe. Then, the glorious depiction of a mother turned into a part that must be mastered and controlled during the Greek and Roman era. Although presented as a goddess of the fertile and gave birth to the gods/great (super) descents, the mother was portrayed not as the major force. The portrayal of mothers in the East is still described as the great mother, fertile, and having multi-powers. While in Indonesia, the mother is still depicted with nature, the land where human life, that must be respected. KEY WORD: Mother, values, myths, representation, history, East and West worlds, Indonesia, natural conditions, social changes, and cultural dynamics.     About the Authors: Riama Maslan Sihombing, M.Sn. adalah Kandidat Doktor pada Fakultas Senirupa dan Desain ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung), Jalan Ganesha No.10 Bandung 40132, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: English language acquisition needs to be taught from a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural perspective, with the right teaching materials, when pursuing cultural sensitivity and equality. After a brief historical overview and an explanation of the various definitions associated with English language acquisition, English is described in its multiple varieties. It is increasingly contended that non-native English speakers outnumber native speakers in a rapidly globalising world. Case studies are used to justify the need for culturally appropriate teaching materials and the challenges that exist. Change has been slow in addressing the inadequacies in current teaching materials and this paper concludes by suggesting some bottom-up approaches will transform the teaching pedagogy and teachers’ attitudes. The professional development of teachers, together with the support of enlightened linguistic researchers can perhaps lead to an educational philosophy that cuts across colour, creed and race to bring about success to language learners. Thus, creating a better understanding of the English language in the context of cultural appropriateness.Key words: English language, non-native English speakers, bottom-up approaches, and better understanding of the English language.About the Authors: Dr. Vannessa Misso and Dr. Nina Maadad are Lecturers at the School of Education UOA (University of Adelaide), Australia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Purwakarta: From the Capital City of Karawang Regency Becomes Regency Independently”. History is a continuous process with all its dynamics, showing a causal relationship between an event with other events. The events have formed a structure in the history of a steady and fixed. In this context, Purwakarta Regency has had double status as the capital city of Karawang Regency, namely “District, Onderdistrict, Afdeeling, and Kontrole Afdeeling”. The developments of demography and infrastructure, and also changes of administrative region make this Purwakarta region highly dynamic. It is signed by the establishment of Purwakarta Regency independently. This article examines the history of the city of Purwakarta, from the beginning up to the Dutch colonial era (1816-1942), the time of Japanese occupation (1942-1945), the time of the Indonesian revolution (1945-1950), up to the latest development. By using the historical method, which consists of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this article shows that Purwakarta was built by traditional city pattern, signed by the establishment of “Pendopo” (Regent Palace) and Grand Mosque. Water requirements fulfilled by the establishment of “Situ Buleud” (Oval Lake), where in the middle of it was built “babancong”, a building like gazebo. Near to “Situ Buleud”, there is “Bumi Ageung” (Big House), where the Regent family live when the time of “Pendopo” was being built. For the moment, those historical heritages become a local pride as well as the administrative center of Purwakarta Regency.KEY WORD: Capital City of Karawang Regency, Purwakarta Regency; Traditional City Pattern; Social Change; Historical Heritages.About the Author: Dr. Leli Yulifar adalah Dosen Senior di Departemen Pendidikan Sejarah FPIPS UPI (Fakultas Pendidikan Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial, Universitas Pendikan Indonesia), Jalan Dr. Setiabudhi No.229 Bandung 40154, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: In this early of 21st century, Indonesians are currently facing weighty challenges. The social contract between the citizens and the government that was made during the establishment of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is now under a threat such as bleak economy caused by poverty and social problems. There is no other way to escape from the threat but to forestall by implementing integrated economic development plans nationally. The implementation of the economic plans aforementioned would not possibly be detached of the roles of human beings as human capital and man of culture that are involved directly in the process of developing and re-building the Indonesia nation. In relation to this matter, this paper discusses one part of the cultural dimension, i.e. ethos or characters possessed by a group of people and used as their foundation to work. In “re-building” the country, Indonesians are in need of a group of agents of development who can revive the new and better soul of age (zeitgeist) in this Reform era. The zeitgeist can only appear if those agents are familiar with ethos upheld by the former ones, that is Noblesse Oblige, which means that inside the specialty, power and authority are inherent with responsibility to the people.  Therefore, the agents are the people who have important roles and positions in re-building the economy of Indonesia in pursue of the realization of the nation-state aspiration to become a truly developed, harmonious, and free nation. Key word: economic crisis, to re-build the social contract among the citizens, positions and roles of the statesmen, and aspirations of Indonesian people in economy and politics. About the Author: Dr. Ir. Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Fun-Eco-Preneur Education: A Concept of Multicultural Education to Strengthen the Entrepreneurship Values in Indonesia”. Students’ character can be built by multicultural education, so that they can become more democratic, pluralist, and humanists in their environment. This paper tries to elaborate the concept of education for “fun-eco-preneur” as one of the approaches in multicultural education to enhance the entrepreneurial capabilities, to meet the weakness of our culture as a nation-state in Indonesia. This concept can be applied in Senior High School to build the students’ abilities and strong in entrepreneurship character, not easily discouraged, as well as they appreciate and respect of their families as consumers. As a concept, patterns of behavior such as prayer, attitude, knowledge, skills, and actions have proven to be successful to be applied in education; so, it takes a new combination method between multicultural education and the concept of entrepreneur. Implementation of this concept is proven that the diffusion between multicultural education and cultural entrepreneurship, based on the method of education “fun-eco-preneur”, it is able to give students the field experience that is important to understand and respect others and live in their culture. The implementation of the entrepreneurship program must consider the background of the school, the consent of parents and school owners, education stakeholders, and location of the school environment, and, above all, the willingness of the students themselves to be trained to become a good entrepreneur, fun, and professional.KEY WORD: “Fun-eco-preneur”, multicultural education, students in secondary schools, build an entrepreneurial culture, and people of Indonesia.About the Author: Dr. Suryaman adalah Dosen Pascasarjana UNIPA (Universitas PGRI Adi Buana) Surabaya, Jalan Ngagel Dadi III-B No.37, Surabaya 60245, Jawa Timur, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Education for Beggar Children: A Case Study on Beggar Family in the City of Banda Aceh”. The problem of beggars is a common phenomenon that occurs in urban areas in various parts of the world. This phenomenon also occurs in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The increasing number of beggars has become a social issue in the city of Banda Aceh. This phenomenon has become more worrying, because of the use of children for begging, whereas the children should be educated in the schools. The objectives of this study is to identify the children’s reason and motivation for begging, their educational condition, and the effort of parents toward their children’s education. The study was conducted by using a case study method, including observations, interviews, and document analysis as the instruments. Data triangulation was made to ensure the validity and reliability of the data. Purposive sampling was used to select the respondents. The findings showed that the main reasons why children were begging is to increase the familiy’s financial situation, and/or because they are left fatherless without a main source of income. Some of the respondents were school dropouts, while the other respondents continued their studying in primary school. The result also conveyed that the majority of parents want their children to beg and obtain their education at the same time. The parents are also not providing a good quality education school for their children, even though they have sufficient income from the begging .KEY WORD: Beggar children, beggar family, reasons to begging,  educational condition, parent effort, and bad quality in education.About the Author: Riki Taufiki ialah Pelajar Pasca Sarjana di Jabatan Sosiologi Pendidikan, Fakulti Pendidikan dan Pembangunan Manusia UPSI (Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris), Tanjong Malim, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This paper does not try to paint a bleak picture of e-Government initiative in developing countries or Malaysia in particular. Nonetheless, such limitations, if any, must not be left unnoticed. Indisputably, notions of “success” and “failure” are indeed highly subjective issues. The outcome of something as difficult and complex to achieve as government reform, or higher levels of civic engagement by means of electronic medium, may not be sensed immediately. These agencies must also be ready to transform mindsets, systems, and processes even if this may decrease their autonomy. Boundaries, silos, and counters will have to be torn down and done away as clients move online. Communications with the government via e-mails and other electronic channels will be made a mere routine norm, delivered to the public clients any time of the day across any time zone and in any continent. The implementation of a fully connected Malaysian government also requires empowering the government workforce. Bureaucratic agencies must focus their interest to empowering employees by providing them the tools to perform and deliver their duties better and from any workspace. Therefore, there is an urgent need to make human capital planning a strategic element in the agencies’ initiatives. An effective and fully connected Malaysian e-Government initiative poses challenges on how they might devise policies to spur and inspire local innovation and on how they might integrate which technology to achieve their objectives to a greater degree.Key words: e-Government, Malaysian nation-state, Information and Communication Technology, bureaucratic reform, and effective management.  About the Authors: Azizan H.
