Abstract

This research examines how fukubun (complex sentence) with transitive verbs is constructed in the utterance of Japanese language learners in universities. The fukubun constructions are described and analyzed through transformational generative grammar. This research method is descriptive-qualitative, with data collection techniques in the form of semi-structured interviews. Data analysis uses an analytical approach of transformational generative grammar, namely analysis of phrase structure rules and analysis of the transformation process. The results showed that there were 4 (four) types of B-derived constructs, namely: BB type, BB (1) type, BB (2) type, and BB (3) type. Among the four types of derivatives, type BB construction is dominant in the utterance of learners. This is indicated by the tendency to use the BB-type construction when describing various situations, even though the utterance events use various conjunctions. The dominance of the BB-type shows that the utterances by learners are still relatively simple because it only requires one object in the subordination clause and main clause. Furthermore, B fukubun found eight varieties of conjunctive transformation used in this type. All varieties of conjunctive transformation appeared in the BB-type construction, with relatively frequent use of causality, serial, selection/alternative, and temporal conjunctions. The T-process analysis shows several tendencies in the elementary transformation process in the utterance, namely the omission of the subject in both the subordination clause or the main clause, the merger of the subject or the predicate of the verb, whereas in causality conjunctive transformation learners showed a more varied and complex T-process.

Abstract

Gairaigo, or loanwords borrowed from foreign languages, have become a ubiquitous feature of the Japanese language, with English being the most significant influence. The use of English loanwords in Japanese advertising has become increasingly common, with many commercials and other promotional materials incorporating gairaigo in their messaging. This study aims to explore the prevalence and significance of gairaigo derived from English in Japanese advertising, examining its benefits and drawbacks, and its global implications. This study utilized qualitative approach. The method used was descriptive method. Data collection technique through literature study. Data obtained online through various academic database, a total of 19 books and 26 scientific articles, and be analysed using descriptive analyse technique. This study found important benefits of gairaigo in Japanese advertising, that are: increase product appeal to younger generations, more effective communication with international audiences, and enhanced global image of Japanese brands. However, there are also drawbacks, that are: limited accessibility for non-English speakers, potential language erosion and loss of cultural identity, and negative impact on traditional Japanese businesses. Furthermore, the global implications of gairaigo in Japanese advertising are also significant, with the influence of Japanese advertising on global marketing trends and cultural exchange and cross-linguistic communication. Overall, while the use of gairaigo in Japanese advertising can bring numerous benefits, it is important to carefully consider its potential drawbacks and cultural implications for both domestic and global audiences. By understanding the impact of gairaigo on Japanese advertising, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between language, culture, and marketing in a global context. Abstract

The integration between the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the education sector requires teachers and students to utilize nowadays technologies, one of them using Padlet. Padlet is a web-based application that enables users to write or pin-up files such as pictures on its’ virtual walls. This study aims the utilization of Padlet to enhance students' Japanese composition skills in a Japanese basic writing class (Shokyu Sakubun). Involving a class of 15 (fifteen) students enrolled in a basic writing course at a state university in Bandung, West Java, this study attained the data through pre-test, post-test, and students' essay observations during four times treatments and questionnaires. The findings showed that there is a significant increase in the average grades after using Padlet for collaborative learning in basic Japanese writing courses, which is seen from the results of the pre-test and post-test. It can be interpreted that Padlet was helpful for Japanese learners to improve their competence in Japanese writing skills. The findings also showed that the respondents gave positive responses to Padlet utilization. Further, Padlet can be used not only as a medium in teaching but also as a medium to store and distribute teaching materials from teachers to students or vice versa, hence it is useful as an application to enhance Japanese language learning in general.

Abstract

The article shows that W. B. Yeats' themes have drawn attention to how Ireland's history and culture have developed. Irish bard W. B. Yeats is a pioneer who is advancing his country's culture, society, and civilization. To maintain the political cacophony of his nation while maintaining the impression of Ireland's atmospheric layout in his literature, he is constantly seen upholding it. His philosophical thoughts and concepts soften the edge of Ireland's independence. He uses the themes to make a point about coming up with ideas. In his themes, he demonstrates his writing style and presentational structure. Yeats' perspective on politics systematizing literary themes has caught the enormity of writing impetus. This article shows a qualitative approach to the use of themes Yeats. The themes in W. B. Yeats' creation are on display, and the spontaneous attitudes that he used to shape the portrayal of Ireland are the presentation's heart and soul. The use of themes has been put to signify the motif of Yeats in Sherpur Sadar, Bangladesh. Astonishingly, the significance of Yeats influences the students living far away from Ireland. Here the concerned bodies opine on the various aspect of Yeats’ themes and a brief analysis of its’ connection with Japan’s Noh or Nogaku which essentially influenced Yeats’ works.

Abstract

Slang is one of the language styles used by young people, which is called Wakamono Kotoba in Japanese and Bahasa Gaul in Indonesian. One similar characteristic in wakamono kotoba (Japanese slang) and Bahasa Gaul (Indonesian’s slang) is the abbreviation. This research aims to compare Japanese and Indonesian slang abbreviations by explaining their origins, processes, differences, and similarities. This study was collected based on written language from Pergikuliner and Taberogu sites from March until April 2023, each taking a maximum of 50 reviews per restaurant. The review was gathered from 10 restaurants each from Indonesian and Japanese sites, meaning there are 500 data from each site and 1000 reviews from both websites. Then, the author conducted the research by analyzing the abbreviation process with similarities and differences between the two languages. The results show 398 data on slang abbreviations in wakamono kotoba and 244 data on slang abbreviations in bahasa gaul. The abbreviation process in the Japanese language mainly happens with the abbreviation of sentences or phrases, following that is an abbreviation at the end of the word, the abbreviation of two or more moras, omissions at the end of each term, the abbreviation of three words in a sentence or phrases, and abbreviations formed from initial letters of each word. On the other hand, the abbreviation process in the Indonesian language mainly happens as an omission of the word’s part, followed by shortened words from a combination of letters, acronyms of letters, combining from two separate forms, and abbreviation as letter symbols. The similarity between the two languages is used identical types of abbreviations (acronyms and toujigo), have the abbreviation process from another language, and have the same pattern in the abbreviation of the end of words. While the differences are from letters or syllables, the objects that went through the abbreviation process, changed in form in the Japanese source and tended to use foreign languages in the Indonesian source.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the formation and meaning of fukugoudoushi or compound verb formed from the Verb+ageru. This study is a qualitative descriptive research. The total of 35 data is in the form of sentences in data sources taken from the 2021 edition of the NHK Japan articles. The data collection method is the note-taking method. Data analysis uses the distributional method with advanced techniques for direct elements, namely by dividing the fukugoudoushi forming elements into front and back elements. Furthermore, it explains the characteristics of the front elements based on the theory of Kindaichi (1989) which divides doushi into 4 groups, namely joutaidoushi, keizokudoushi, shunkandoushi, and daiyonshu-doushi. The results showed that out of 35 data analyzed there were front elements of fukugoudoushi ~ageru in the form of tadoushi-keizokudoushi (20 data), tadoushi-shunkandoushi (9 data), jidoushi-keizokudoushi (1 datum), jidoushi-shunkandoushi (3 data), and futsuumeishi (2 data). The meanings resulting from the formation of fukugoudoushi ~ageru include showing direction, showing improvement, showing high value, expressing self-demeaning, and ending an activity.

Abstract

Japanese differs from Indonesian in letters, grammatical patterns, pronunciation, and vocabulary. These differences make students difficult to understand Japanese because some vocabularies are similar in pronunciation. For example, the word ichi which means one similar to the word shichi which means seven. Moreover, many students mispronounced long sound as short such as the word ohayou (good morning) which is pronounced as ohayo. Students also find it difficult to pause when pronouncing sentences in Japanese which produces unnatural accents. To overcome these problems, this study aims to use the OJAD (Online Japanese Accent Dictionary) website for learning Japanese, particularly to improve students’ speaking skills. OJAD is a website in which there are various features and one of the features is the Suzuki-kun Prosody Tutorial. Through this feature, students will be able to practice pronouncing words or sentences in Japanese according to pronunciation accuracy, including accents and intonations. This research employs a descriptive qualitative study, with participants from grade X students of a Vocational High School in Cilacap, Central Java. The results showed that after using the OJAD website, students’ Japanese speaking skills improved, and able to pronounce Japanese with better pronunciation and intonation. In addition, learning Japanese using the OJAD website as a media lesson makes students more enthusiastic and enjoy learning Japanese. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for improving proficiency in Japanese, especially in terms of Japanese speaking skills.

Abstract

Each song lyric has a message that the writer wants to convey to the listener about what the writer feels and thinks. This research discusses how Japanese female idols are represented in the opening soundtrack of the anime song “Oshi no Ko” which is currently being discussed among Japanese idol fans. The song titled “Idol” is the work of a duo band known as Yoasobi, telling a story of anxiety and sadness in the romance of Japanese youth life but accompanied by uplifting techno music. When song lyrics are made based on commercial interests, the meaning of the text should be criticized to find out who is in a dominating position and who is not. The song “Idol” in this research is analyzed using Sara Mills’sCritical Discourse Analysis (CDA) (1997) with a feminist perspective to analyze the presentation of the storyteller (subject) and the told (object). The results of this study show that the position of female idols as objects is shown as a figure who does not talk about herself much, her desires and feelings are less well conveyed. Female idols are shown more from the fans’ point of view as the position of the storyteller (subject). The position of female idols in the lyrics is only shown by stereotypical idol characters who are required to have a positive image, have high loyalty to fans, are required to be perfect by covering all flaws, and are prohibited from dating. Although the song “Idol” is an anime soundtrack that discusses the other side of idol life, in this song, the opportunity to voice the thoughts and what female idols want to express is not well displayed. Thus, the lyricist only presents female idols based on what they want for the sake of desire and sexual objects. This research only uses one main data source, namely song lyrics. It is hoped that future research can use a variety of main data sources such as anime or manga.

Abstract

This research is a continuation of previous research. In previous research, the author examined the effect of the theoretical explanation of the Japanese adnominal clause on the learners’ understanding. However, in this research, it was discovered that students’ knowledge of case particles in Japanese is a key determinant of understanding Japanese adnominal clauses. In this research, the author tries to examine the effect of students’ understanding of case particles in Japanese through the concept of Kou (argument) in verbs. In line with previous research, in this research, the author also tries to bridge the theoretical concepts of linguistics so that they can be applied to Japanese language learning in the classroom. In this research, the author took 20 second-year students as a sample and divided them into two groups. In the experimental group, the author used the Focus on Form (FoF) method to teach the concept of the verb “argument” so that students could determine the correct Japanese case particles. Meanwhile, in group control, they only do pattern practice exercises like a normal class. The test analysis results of the two groups after attending the experimental class did not show any significant differences. In future research, it is necessary to look at the long-term influence of applying linguistic theory in the classroom.
