Abstract

Through investigating the conception of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, it is obvious that the unity is the main factor that ensured the stability and security of the state members. Due to some political concerns, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), United Arab Emirates (UAE) and State of Bahrain launched boycott policies against the State of Qatar. Accordingly, Qatar has increased its alliance with Turkey and Iran to ensure its national security. The focal aims of this thesis are to explore the consequences of the Qatari Crisis on social, economic, political and mainly on the security sides. Moreover, identifying the key sources of friction between Qatar and the blockading states and how other factors, both historical and contextual have contribute and shaped these differences to the point that the states were willing to engage in such dramatic moves against each other. To achieve these objectives, the study applied qualitative method. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to conduct elite interviews. A semi-structured interview was developed by the researcher for collecting the required data. The interviews focused on the three main political levels which are the strategic, supervisory and executive level. The research provides important solutions for the states in the Gulf region and how to go about their diplomatic and political maneuvers given the significant risks that may be involved. This research used the Theory of Alliance to explore the attitude of the gulf countries along with the situations held on the blockade. The findings revealed that the root causes of the Qatari Crisis are multi-dimensional and include historical, political, economic factors and the media.

Abstract

This paper examines the evolution of Bung Karno’s Pancasila concept, tracing its origins from his pivotal June 1, 1945 speech and the comprehensive elucidation of Pancasila during the 1958 Pancasila Course, a crucial moment in shaping its official formulation. Pancasila has become an enduring cornerstone of Indonesian ideology. This prompts a closer examination of Sukarno’s political ideals. This study scrutinizes Bung Karno’s Pancasila ideology within the context of his political philosophy. Methodologically, this article employs a Qualitative-Descriptive approach, primarily drawing on literature and documentary sources. The concept of deconstruction has also used in this article. The findings underscore how Sukarno’s political convictions found expression in Pancasila. His political thought was deeply influenced by Indonesia’s social and political landscape, emphasizing the nation’s diverse yet interconnected destiny and history. Sukarno ingeniously infused this diversity with spiritual unity, encapsulated in the five principles known as “Pancasila.” For Sukarno, Pancasila wasn’t theoretical; it was his practical political tool to manage diversity and avert polarization among Indonesian citizens. The first principle, “Believe in One Supreme God,” was particularly pivotal, serving as the foundation on which the others relied to maintain their integrity. This study sheds light on how Pancasila became more than just a concept; it was Sukarno’s practical response to the complexities of Indonesia’s socio-political landscape, emphasizing unity amidst diversity.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of climate change campaign by Blackpink towards the Blink Official Indonesia (BOI) community. Currently, the modern diplomacy practice is no longer focusing on the state actor but more importantly, involving non-state actor, especially public figures or celebrities as the ambassador to carry out specific mission of the states or international organizations at the global level. An example of such development is the appointment of South Korea-based music group Blackpink as the goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Climate Change Conference 26 (COP 26) in 2021. The selection of Blackpink as the COP26 ambassador was intended to improve awareness on the global campaign against climate change, especially within the BLINK – Blackpink fans community – worldwide through #ClimateActionInYourArea campaign in the Blackpink official Youtube account. This study used a survey method of 203 sample respondents from a population of followers from BOI accounts on Instagram using probability sampling technique. The analysis results show that Blackpink’s celebrity diplomacy campaign encourages Blink Indonesia to develop interest in climate change issues by making donations and emphasizing the importance of climate action in their neighborhood. Such findings confirm the expected effect of attraction tactic of soft power strategy in the current diplomatic practice, that is to co-opt the perception of targeted audience towards specific issue in international relations.

Abstract

The role of women as political elites is increasingly important, which makes gender inequality widespread. This study examines the expansion, role, and contribution of DPD women of the Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) in the 2020 Medan City regional head elections with a case study on the Akhyar-Salman couple. Qualitative research was conducted by collecting data on the role of female PKS party members and leaders in winning the Akhyar-Salman pair through in-depth interviews with research subjects. sample determination using a purposive sampling technique. All data were processed descriptively. The results showed that the expansion of women in improving the quality and quantity of regional elections in Medan City is significant; this is indicated by the contribution of women’s political elites in mobilizing the implementation of campaigns in the community and attracting public interest from upstream to downstream to introduce the Akhyar-Salman couple. Women’s political elites have functions and responsibilities in winning candidate pairs through door-to-door campaigns to each household, creating work programs that attract women to join, such as carrying out women’s recitation (dakwah), helping communities affected by disasters, and carrying out approaches to the ulama. In addition, the most prominent expansion of women lies in the gender equality program and equal access to information, which have the most decisive influence on the campaign process. The work program launched by the mayoral and deputy candidate pairs is the result of preliminary studies of the community and data collection by the DPD PKS women’s political elites. Finally, the Japuan program (women’s network) indicates that voter accommodation and navigation can be appropriately managed by disseminating information related to candidate pairs by political elites from the PKS party.

Abstract

Over the past twenty-five years, gender and politics scholars have engaged in extensive theoretical and empirical discussions about women’s political representation. This article provides a comprehensive literature review of these studies. This study is divided into three themes: descriptive representation of women, substantive representation of women, and the correlation between descriptive and substantive representation of women. The literature review method is carried out by exploring and compiling studies on women’s political representation from various countries, classifying them based on specific topics, and mapping out what has been explored in these studies. The results of the study show that most of the research on women’s political representation is in the realm of women’s descriptive representation, which generally discusses the factors that affect the level of women’s political representation, obstacles and challenges in women’s political representation and the strategies used by women candidates in electoral politics. Meantime, studies on women’s substantive representation still need to be explored, especially in the context of countries in Asia, especially Indonesia. Then, studies on the relationship between descriptive and substantive representations of women show two debate patterns. Some experts believe a positive correlation exists between increasing the number of women’s representation and its substantive effect. Some others find no correlation between the descriptive and substantive representations of women.

Abstract

This paper attempts to reveal how the local media, Kedaulatan Rakyat, produces discourse on the Yogyakarta palace’s internal conflict involving Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X and his siblings. The Special Region of Yogyakarta as a province in Indonesia has a special government system that is different from other regions. The governor of Yogyakarta is not elected by the people like in other regions in Indonesia but is determined by the DPRD based on who serves as the King of the Yogyakarta Palace. This phenomenon becomes interesting when there are differences of opinion among the people and within the Yogyakarta Palace regarding the acceptance of women leaders. The conflict began to arise when Sultan Hamengku Buwono X issued the Sabda Tama and Sabda Raja (Sabda Raja) which were interpreted as the Sultan’s way to pave the way for his daughter to become heir to the throne. The Sultan’s younger siblings opposed the female king to rule in Yogyakarta, so an internal conflict arose. The research method used is a qualitative method with a critical discourse analysis approach using the Norman Fairclough model to analyze news texts related to the Yogyakarta Palace’s internal conflict from the Kedaulatan Rakyat Daily. From the results of the research, it was found that the Kedaulatan Rakyat Daily produced discourses on internal conflict in the Yogyakarta palace by representing the ideology and interests of Sultan HB X’s younger siblings. This local daily newspaper also commodified internal conflict in the Yogyakarta palace as events that were produced and disseminated to the public for the benefits media economy.
