Abstract

This article examines how presidential candidates have produced legal discourses that are used as political instruments in winning the political contestation of the Indonesian national presidential election in 2024. Through political discourse, Prabowo Subiyanto aimed to influence the public for his victory. As a result, he emerged victorious, proving that political discourse in public debates can successfully deconstruct, influence, and steer the way of thinking and can lead voters’ preferences. The main argument in this article is that discourse as a political instrument is not empty, but behind the discourse is a form of political truth operation produced for certain goals. In this study, the method used is qualitative with discourse analysis to uncover the ideal of truth behind discourse. The researcher applied Van Dijk’s discourse theory which uses three analyses; text, social cognition and social context. Therefore, the use of Van Dijk’s critical analysis method is the author’s position as a novelty in the midst of several discourse studies that emphasise more on content analysis. Based on the results of this study, the researcher found several results from the direction of legal politics, namely that it offers law as a priority, law enforcement and economic growth, independence of law enforcers, and law based on the principle of justice.

Abstract

TikTok as a platform has become an ideal environment for political discussions and even plays a role in spreading false information. Malaysia, a country with diverse ethnicities, has experienced the impact of viral political misinformation on societal harmony. Thus, this study aims to enhance our understanding of how political misinformation on TikTok can exacerbate ethnic differences in Malaysia by highlighting its potential social implications. The study adopts the Uses and Gratifications Theory as a foundation for developing a framework. A quantitative survey method was employed, with data collected via Google Forms from 407 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS software. The findings reveal that the majority of respondents are highly aware and knowledgeable about various aspects of political fake news on TikTok. Specifically, understanding of fake news on TikTok is notably high, with an overall mean score of M=4.17, indicating strong comprehension among respondents. Similarly, exposure to political content on TikTok recorded a high average score of M=3.33, reflecting frequent interactions with such material. Furthermore, perceptions of political fake news had an overall mean of M=3.79, showing that respondents generally acknowledge and recognize the presence of misinformation. Lastly, the perceived impact of political fake news on interethnic relations was significant, with a high average score of M=3.99, highlighting concerns about the potential exacerbation of ethnic tensions due to misinformation. These findings underscore the critical need to address the spread of political fake news to mitigate its adverse effects on social cohesion.

Abstract

Climate change has exerted significant social, economic, and environmental pressures on small-scale coffee farmers, particularly those living near protected forest areas. Declining yields, land limitations, and restrictive conservation policies have created complex tensions related to resource access and survival strategies. This study aims to analyze the political discourses embedded in the dynamics of land rights disputes and climate adaptation strategies of small-scale coffee farmers. Using a qualitative approach and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study explores how farmers negotiate, reject, and reinterpret state environmental regulations through everyday practices and narratives. This study’s findings reveal that coffee farmers’ adaptation strategies are not merely technical responses to climate change, but also reflect resistance to dominant power structures. This process includes contesting land authority, territorializing space within the conservation framework, and recognizing the often marginalized identities of farmers. The conclusion of this research shows that the resilience of coffee farmers can be understood as a form of resistance, reflecting negotiations and opposition to dominant discourses, as well as their efforts to reclaim their living spaces increasingly threatened by exclusive conservation policies.

Abstract

This study investigates the politicization of security issues in Indonesian electoral politics through the construction and mobilization of the “Asing dan Aseng” narrative—a rhetorical strategy that depicts foreign influence and ethnic Chinese communities as existential threats to national sovereignty. The research aims to understand how political actors strategically use this narrative to mobilize voter support and legitimize their leadership. Using the theoretical lens of securitization and the politics of fear, the study applies a qualitative method based on critical discourse analysis of purposively selected campaign speeches, media coverage, and propaganda materials from the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections and the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. The analysis reveals three dominant narrative frames: the portrayal of foreign economic control, ethnic scapegoating of Chinese Indonesians, and the betrayal of national interest by political elites. These narratives are conveyed through speech acts, media framing, and disinformation, transforming political competition into perceived national emergencies. The findings indicate that while effective in galvanizing electoral support, this strategy intensifies political polarization, delegitimizes opponents, and reinforces exclusionary populist nationalism. The study concludes that the instrumentalization of fear and identity in electoral politics poses serious threats to democratic integrity, social cohesion, and institutional legitimacy, calling for greater media literacy, counter-disinformation efforts, and democratic safeguards.

Abstract

This study investigates student activism in post-authoritarian Indonesia, focusing on the interplay between higher education reform, movement dynamics, and evolving political narratives over the past decade. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we surveyed 497 undergraduates from social and political science faculties at 26 Indonesian universities and supplemented our analysis with a document review of student movements from 1999 to 2021. The study examines the transformation of Indonesia’s higher education system, the defining characteristics of contemporary student activism, and the predominant socio-political issues driving post-authoritarian student movements. Our findings show that student activism primarily occurs through various platforms, including social media, organizational participation, public discourse, and street demonstrations. Strategic alliances between campus-based groups and external civil society actors have become increasingly important in facilitating these movements. These movements have increasingly focused on issues such as justice, civil liberties, and welfare, while the rise of anti-oligarchy sentiments highlights ongoing dissatisfaction with the unfinished process of democratic consolidation. The analysis further uncovers a shift in political narratives, reflecting the changing priorities of the student movement in response to Indonesia’s political evolution. This study offers valuable insights into the role of student activism in shaping the state’s post-authoritarian trajectory, contributing to the broader understanding of the youth movement in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines religious polarization in North Maluku, proposing moderated identity politics and a hybrid representation model to explain post-conflict electoral behavior. It highlights local leaders who strategically balance identity appeals with cross-group alliances, integrating structural and agential factors to advance electoral theory and offer a replicable model for mitigating identity-based conflict in plural Indonesian regions. Using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, quantitative data were first collected from 100 proportionally sampled respondents. Subsequently, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 17 key informants. Data triangulation, comparing survey results with interview findings, ensured consistency and strengthened the validity of the research conclusions. The study presents four novel contribution findings. First, it challenges conventional religious voting, demonstrating Sherly Tjoanda’s Catholic victory in a Muslim-majority province, attributed to economic pragmatism, political legacy, and networks over religious affiliation. Second, it introduces the Hybrid Representation Model, combining development performance with a moderate religious figure. Third, it refines voter decision-making through Post-Conflict Electoral Rationality and welfare populism, illustrating how trauma fosters pragmatism. Finally, it develops Moderated Identity Politics, integrating local factors like Nahdlatul Ulama’s influence and conflict trauma to reduce polarization and promote electoral pragmatism. The 2024 North Maluku gubernatorial election, with the Sherly-Sarbin ticket’s victory, exemplified pragmatic considerations outweighing religious identity. This model outcome establishes Moderated Identity Politics that can depolarize elections by endorsing competence-based, cross-faith alliances, and prioritizes a competence-plus-credibility approach. In contexts with a dominant, moderate Islamic organization and where economic competition is not a zero-sum game.

Abstract

This article reviews the presence and progress of the Labour Party in Indonesia in the Reformation Era (1999-2024). Labour and political dynamics in Indonesia have emerged since the Dutch colonial period. In the postcolonial era, the relationship between labour and politics was also dynamic. In the 1950s and 1960s they followed a political trend dominated by political parties. During Soeharto’s New Order political regime since the late 1960s, professional organizations, including labours, were not allowed to participate in politics. The state only approves one labour organization with limited space for movement. Entering the post-1998 Reform Era, labour organizations are no longer single, with the presence of several labour unions. Apart from that, the party experiment with a labour label is back. Even though it has mass numbers spread across many cities, the Labour Party has always failed to win seats in parliament. However, labour union actors continue to engage in politics, including by selling support for certain candidates in presidential elections. In fact, the Labour Party’s re-participation in the 2024 General Election also recorded its failure to become a political party that won seats in parliament (DPR/MPR). Why political experiments with party labels always fail in Indonesia in the Reformation Era is a question that will be answered in this research.

Abstract

This article examines the factors that led the Prabowo-Gibran pair to reach the door of victory in the 2024 elections. The twists and turns of the long process can be navigated with various smooth strategies that demonstrate the pair’s expertise in politics, ultimately leading to a one-round victory. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing data collection techniques that include a literature study and observation. The results showed that various factors contributed to the Prabowo-Gibran pair’s victory, starting with the role of President Jokowi as an incumbent who had a significant influence on Prabowo-Gibran’s electability, often referred to as the Jokowi Effect. In addition, proficiency in identifying opportunities and managing situations is a key collaboration, such as the formation of “Gemoy” framing, success in reaching Gen Z preferences, and reversing propaganda tactics. The victory was also supported by the TKN’s expertise in gaining the support of various political parties, mass organizations, and volunteers. Effective management of situations and opportunities is key, as well as a strategy to stay one step ahead of rivals to achieve success. This research contributes to the field of political communication and highlights the importance of forming public opinion as a key factor in the success of political contestants in democratic elections.

Abstract

Local Political Dynamics in the Implementation of the Program for Innovation in Regional Development and Empowerment (PIPPK) in Bandung City examines how local political dynamics influence the implementation of the PIPPK policy. This study focuses on analyzing the interactions among stakeholders, including the Regional Governance Section of Bandung City, subdistrict heads, community leaders, and local political actors, as well as the challenges arising from these dynamics. The research qualitative primary data from in-depth interviews and field observations with secondary data from media documentation and previous studies. The findings indicate that local political dynamics affect decision-making processes, resource allocation, and the effectiveness of PIPPK implementation. Consistent support from the city government and synergy among stakeholders are key to the successful implementation of this policy. The study also emphasizes the importance of strategic approaches to enhancing transparency, decentralizing authority, and actively involving the community to address existing challenges. The findings of this study reveal that the interactions between local government, subdistrict heads, community leaders, and local political actors in the implementation of PIPPK in Bandung City are often shaped by political interests and power dynamics. Local government officials and subdistrict heads coordinate the program, while community leaders help facilitate its implementation. However, political actors sometimes influence decision-making, prioritizing political gains over program objectives. The main challenges include political fragmentation, limited community involvement, and the dominance of patronage networks, all of which can hinder effective collaboration and the achievement of the program’s goals in community empowerment and regional development..

Abstract

This article investigates the weakening of legislative oversight by The House of (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat, DPR) during President Joko Widodo’s tenure from 2014 to 2024. Despite the expanded constitutional authority granted to the DPR following the 1998 political reforms, the quality of oversight function has diminished markedly in the Jokowi era. Drawing on theoretical and empirical literature, the article argues that this erosion is not solely the result of institutional shortcomings or inadequate reform, but is primarily driven by pervasive clientelistic relationships between the president and party elites. Such clientelism entrenches political patronage, enabling the executive to exert significant influence over legislative behavior and undermining the DPR’s independence. This study uses a qualitative, interpretivist approach, employing in-depth interviews, observation, and literature review within real social contexts. This study aims to provide a critical assessment of how clientelism has reshaped the balance of power between executive and legislature.
