Abstract

This study aims to explore the potential and implications of implementing blockchain technology in the context of elections and governance. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, including expert interviews, stakeholder surveys, and case studies from various countries, the research provides in-depth insights into how blockchain can revolutionize electoral processes and governance. The findings indicate that blockchain implementation in elections has the potential to enhance the integrity and security of voting processes, though significant challenges exist in terms of existing technological infrastructure and public acceptance. In governance, blockchain offers improvements in transparency and efficiency, yet faces obstacles in scalability, integration with existing IT systems, and data security and privacy. The study also reveals an urgent need for the development of appropriate legal and regulatory frameworks to support blockchain implementation while ensuring data security and privacy. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach and public education in deploying blockchain in the public sector to achieve beneficial and sustainable changes in the digital era. This research contributes significantly to the literature on blockchain, particularly its application in elections and governance, and provides guidance for policymakers and practitioners in effectively integrating this technology.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the ‘Desak Anies’ political campaign strategy run by Anies Baswedan in the 2024 Indonesian General Election, focusing on the use of social media and direct interaction to increase young voter engagement. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through analysis of mass media sources, literature reviews, and interactions on Twitter social media, which were then processed using Nvivo 12 Plus software. The data analysis technique in this study uses an interactive model technique developed by Miles, Huberman, & Saldaña which consists of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. This research applies four main theories namely Democracy Theory, Political Communication, Social Media, and Political Participation to examine the impact of the campaign on political participation and public communication. The results show that ‘Desak Anies’ succeeded in creating active participation and open dialogue among young voters, but also revealed the limitations of social media in presenting political issues in depth and the risk of polarising opinions. The article also highlights the challenges of using social media in simplifying complex political issues and the risks of polarising opinions. Through this exploration, this article provides insights into the potential and limitations of social media as a tool for political mobilisation in the digital age.

Abstract

Ritual ceremonies are the core and main thing in the life of Balinese Hindu society. Ceremonies have become part of everyday life that cannot be separated from Balinese life, and ceremonial rituals become the main needs that must be fulfilled as Balinese Hindus. Ritual ceremonies greatly influence the power system that exists in Bali. The growing political trend is that religion has become a key instrument in gaining political support. The purpose of this research is to look at the relationship between religion and the state in the context of local politics in Bali. This research is a qualitative research with literature review technique that examines various relevant literatures. The data used is secondary data derived from journals, websites, newspapers, and archival reports related to the object of research. The data validity technique uses data triangulation which aims to compare different data sources, so that the data produced is valid. The results show that the relationship between religion and the state lies in the attractiveness that religion offers in the electoral process. Balinese Hinduism provides room for politicians to exercise influence. Religious politics that is able to accommodate the ideological and economic needs of society through ritual ceremonies is seen as being able to become a powerful weapon to achieve political support.

Abstract

This study offers a political science analysis of border management policies in Indonesia and Australia, focusing on security, community welfare, and international relations. Indonesia adopts a development-oriented approach aimed at enhancing infrastructure and economic access in border areas, promoting national integration but facing coordination and surveillance challenges. Australia, in contrast, implements a security-driven approach, particularly through Operation Sovereign Borders, effectively preventing illegal immigration yet criticized for its stringent, less humanitarian stance. Employing qualitative methods, including literature review and online media analysis, this study examines the political implications and geopolitical context of each policy. Findings suggest that Indonesia could enhance border security by integrating advanced technology, while Australia might benefit from a more cooperative, humanitarian approach to improve regional relations. This analysis contributes to political science discussions on border governance, proposing a balanced model that addresses both security and welfare in managing national borders.

Abstract

This study examines how Open Government initiatives enhance the effectiveness of the Independent Farmer Card (KPM) Plus Program and their subsequent impacts on Food Security and Food Independence among rural communities. The research problem of this study is that some farmers lack an understanding of how to access support and follow application instructions for agricultural aid through the KPM Plus Program. The research analyzes the impact of transparency, participation, and collaboration within government frameworks on agricultural support. The findings highlight that Open Government initiatives significantly enhance the effectiveness of the KPM Plus Program, leading to better food security and independence for farmers. While SEM results confirm that strong governance positively influences agricultural programs, the model’s fit indices indicate a need for refinement to capture the underlying dynamics better. The study recommends strengthening Open Government practices to enhance program effectiveness and food security in rural areas. Future research should consider additional variables and refine the model for deeper insights into the relationship between governance and agriculture. This research contributes valuable perspectives on rural development, highlighting the importance of transparent and participative governance in advancing agricultural support and food sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the SRIKANDI e-government policy in Indonesia, focusing on six critical elements: information exchange, information security, citizen engagement, human resources, inter-agency services, and policy-related decision-making. Employing a qualitative research methodology, NVIVO software was used to conduct thorough data coding and content analysis. Data were collected through literature reviews, non-participant observations, in-depth interviews, and analysis of official government documents, ensuring robust triangulation and comprehensive understanding. The findings reveal significant challenges in information security, particularly with system vulnerabilities that pose risks to data integrity. The level of citizen engagement remains low, with existing regulations limiting public participation in the development and use of the G2G system. Human resource issues, especially in regional areas, highlight gaps in both technical skills and staffing adequacy. System reliability, a crucial discovery, emphasizes the need for stable microservices architecture and proper integration of blockchain technology development to ensure seamless operation. Moreover, political commitment emerges as the primary driver in policy-related decision-making, with clear discrepancies between regional leadership affecting implementation success. The study finds that stronger political will and alignment between government levels are necessary for realising SRIKANDI’s full potential. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities of e-government policy implementation in Indonesia. It offers key recommendations to address political alignment and technical infrastructure challenges, with broader implications for optimizing e-government policies in developing nations.

Abstract

This study critiques the phenomenon of surveillance capitalism in the digital era, focusing on its impact on digital democracy or e-democracy in Indonesia. Drawing from Shoshana Zuboff’s framework, surveillance capitalism leverages human behavioural data as raw material for commercial predictions, threatening privacy, fostering polarization, and weakening the digital public sphere. Using a qualitative literature-based approach and semi-structured interviews with experts and practitioners, the research validates its findings through data triangulation across journal articles, policy reports, and interview insights. The results indicate that social media algorithms contribute to the spread of disinformation, political polarization, and the manipulation of public opinion. For instance, during the 2024 elections in Indonesia, algorithms were found to amplify echo chambers, reduce exposure to diverse perspectives, and promote sensational content. The study concludes that technology’s negative impacts are shaped by the economic structures and designs underlying its use, underscoring the need for regulatory frameworks and public awareness to address these challenges.

Abstract

This research explores the phenomenon of empty boxes and millennial participation in the 2024 Lampung Provincial Election. It highlights the constitutional concern of single-candidate elections, where a win means no competition, but an empty box win results in a government-appointed leader. This issue follows the Constitutional Court Decision Number 60/2024, which eased candidacy requirements. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data was gathered through interviews and FGDs. The findings show that millennials dominated the 2024 Lampung voter list, making up 55% or 3,641,169 of 6,515,869 total voters. In Lampung Barat, Parosil Mabsus-Mad Hasnurin, the only pair running against an empty box, won 87.79% of the vote. At the provincial level, Rahmat Mirzani Djausal and Jihan Nurlela were declared Governor and Deputy Governor for 2025-2029.The study recommends raising public awareness that voting for an empty box is a valid option under election law, allowing voters to voice dissatisfaction with a single candidate. This supports a more democratic process, ensuring elected leaders are accountable to the people.

Abstract

The Bandung Conference 1955 is an essential foundation of Indonesia and Eastern African nations under the scope of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Nairobi, Kenya. Yet, contemporary trends in trade, investment, and diplomatic engagement indicate that revitalizing this spirit requires new approaches amid a global economy driven by pragmatic interests. Therefore, this paper studies how the Bandung Conference spirit of solidarity is exercised in the contemporary Indonesia and Eastern Africa nations relations especially in terms of economy and politics. The paper uses the perspective international cooperation theory in scope of the global political economy which emphasizes that there are essential reciprocal relations between aspects of politics and economics between two actors in global politics with the insight from postcolonialism. Furthermore, this paper utilizes a qualitative research approach based on qualitative data for both primary and secondary data with direct observation as paramount data collecting method. This paper contributes to the academic discourse by bridging historical ideals with contemporary realities, offering a refined framework that extends traditional notions of solidarity to address modern economic imperatives. The findings suggest that although the Bandung legacy remains a pivotal theoretical foundation, its principles are inadequately reflected in both state and non-state interactions, as evidenced by limited trade volumes, modest diplomatic initiatives, and weak reciprocity in business relations. The study concludes that actualizing the Bandung spirit in contemporary Indonesia–Eastern Africa relations should prioritize enhancing collaboration among business sectors and other non-state actors.
