Abstract

This article aims to determine the symbolic reality and subjective reality of fanatic behavior of K-Popers in editing content on community and fan accounts on Instagram. This research uses qualitative research methods and a descriptive phenomenological approach. The data collection technique is observation and interviews with K-Pop account admins on Instagram. The informants for this research are admin @yoyuby93, @agustdmine93, @yoza_anjelisa, and @asrianisj. The data was analyzed systematically through the stages of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of this research show that (1) The fanatic behavior of K-Popers in editing content on the Instagram accounts of community account admins and BTS fans does not meet objective reality. Because some of the content created by the admin is the result of edits and illustrations according to his imagination, some are even not bound by the rules for creating content so the resulting content is uncontrolled and doesn't make sense. (2) The symbolic reality of the fanaticism of community account admins and BTS fans in editing content where admins always use certain symbols or elements to express their love, enjoyment, loyalty and pride towards K-Pop idols. (3) The subjective reality of the fanatic behavior of community account admins and BTS fans in editing content where the admin's feelings as a K-Pop fan influence the way he edits content because idols act as admin content ideas where they are inspired by the expressions, style and charm of their K-Pop idols.

Abstract

Gender communication plays an important role in shaping the dynamics of interaction in families, especially in broken home families. This study aims to analyze the role of gender in gender communication patterns of broken home families in Pampangan hamlet, A'bulosibatang village, Marusu sub-district. The research method used is a qualitative approach with in-depth interview techniques and observation of family members who experience parental separation. The results of the study indicate that the communication pattern applied is a balanced split pattern. Where communication in the family is divided equally, but family members tend to side with one parent. Children still have good communication relationships with both parents,s but are closer to one of them. Children who are raised by mothers tend to experience more emotional and open communication, while children who are raised by fathers more often experience instructional, limited, and less expressive communication. So that a mother only elaborates the feminine aspect more in communicating with her children, both girls and boys. Likewise, a father who is more dominant in actualizing the masculine aspect in interacting with children affects the development of the children who live with him. Communication patterns in broken home families in this area are still influenced by the dominant gender construction in society. Therefore, a more inclusive and supportive communication approach is needed to help family members deal with the emotional and social challenges resulting from parental separation

Abstract

The conflict between farmers and herders in Nigeria has, over time, impacted adversely on ethnic tolerance, agriculture, source of livelihood, sheltering and lives of many. In the process, the media have been noted to have exerted a great deal of influence on the perception of people on the array of issues reported by the media. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to examine the portrayal of Unrest forces farmers off their land, a documentary produced by Al Jazeera, on specific themes portrayed in the documentary, government responsibility towards the conflict, the portrayal of language in the documentary and to determine the consequences of the conflict portrayed in the documentary. A qualitative content analysis was performed on the documentary having determined the content categories. The study found that the documentary moderately portrayed peace journalism, government’s inability to do enough in curbing the conflict between farmers and herders, which affected the effectiveness and outcomes of the peace journalism. This is akin to the notation that the media engagement of the conflicting parties, in order to allow them to state their needs, wants and expectations from the other conflicting party and the government, will go a long way in the settlement of the conflict. Therefore, the media are one of the determinants of the escalation or de-escalation of conflict issues. The media should therefore practice continuity in the ways by which they handle conflict issues and to contribute immensely to conflict resolution, peace building of conflict-related issues, to prevent reprisal attacks. More so, the conflict between farmers and herders would subside if government gives adequate attention and act duly in resolving the conflict. Keywords:

Abstract

Air pollution in Riau Province is an environmental problem that has been going on for years, with significant impacts on public health, the environment, and the economy. One of the main causes of air pollution is forest and land fires (karhutla), which are generally caused by land clearing practices for agriculture and oil palm plantations. Although various efforts have been made to overcome air pollution, its implementation in Riau Province still faces a number of challenges, such as lack of socialization, suboptimal supervision, and weak law enforcement against perpetrators of arson. This study aims to examine how air pollution control policies are implemented in Riau Province through analysis of local media coverage from 2021 to 2024. The method used is qualitative research with a descriptive approach, which focuses on analyzing news content related to air pollution control policies. The results of the study show that although various policies have been implemented, challenges in supervision and public awareness still hinder the effectiveness of air pollution control efforts. This study provides recommendations for policy makers to strengthen coordination between agencies, increase public education, and improve supervision for more effective air pollution reduction in the future.

Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method, this research focuses on consumer interactions on TikTok, by analyzing four important elements of brand equity namely brand awareness, perceived quality, brand association, and brand loyalty. Data was collected from November 2 to December 2, 2024, using Brand24 for media monitoring. The results show that Maybelline leads in terms of brand awareness, perceived quality, and brand loyalty, while both brands show equally strong brand associations through their collaborations with international celebrities. Abstract

Music videos have become a popular medium for conveying social messages. This study analyzes the representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) messages in Taylor Swift's music video "You Need To Calm Down" using a semiotic approach. An in-depth analysis of the visual symbols, music, and lyrics in the video aims to reveal hidden meanings related to LGBT issues. The results of this study indicate the presence of visual codes that represent the LGBT community, such as the use of bright colors, eye-catching costumes, and scenes showing same-sex relationships, using John Fiske's semiotic analysis. This study makes a significant contribution to understanding how music videos can be used as a tool to campaign for social issues. The findings of this study can be a reference for other researchers who are interested in studying the representation of gender, sexuality, and identity in popular media.

Abstract

This research critically analyzes the representation of the Gunungkidul community in the short film Njagong. Employing a qualitative method with a critical paradigm from media and cultural studies, this study applies Gill Branston and Roy Stafford’s textual analysis. This framework investigates four concepts: semiotics, structuralism, denotation/connotation, and ideological codes. Semiotically, signifiers like bamboo houses, traditional utensils (e.g., kukusan, irik), dry fields, and salt connote poverty, constructing a social meaning of enduring impoverishment. Structurally, the film depicts a community without class division, where everyone exists in the same social stratum—impoverished farmers working barren land. Connotatively, rural women are portrayed as underdeveloped due to limited education access. The region itself is constructed as barren, dry, and non-modern, suggesting it is unfit for habitation. These representations are reinforced through ideological codes and myths: that villages are too harsh for a proper life and that rural women, expected to marry young, do not require higher education. This study contributes to media and cultural studies by demonstrating how rural representation in film extends beyond depicting material conditions to actively perpetuating ideologies and myths that sustain social inequality. It enriches the discourse on how film can simultaneously reproduce and critique stigmas against marginalized regions. Ultimately, the research underscores the importance of a critical perspective in viewing media as a contested arena where local identity negotiates with dominant discourses of poverty, gender, and modernity.
