Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine how university students feel about the use of slang. Even though slangs almost, always have negative connotations, it can be argued that they are not always used to offend people. Slangs are also used to express all kinds of emotions ranging from joy to grief, happiness to depression, pleasure to frustration. Mixed method was followed and a total number of hundred students from two private universities were selected as samples using the convenience sampling technique. The statistics demonstrated that the use of slang has become indispensable. On a conclusive note, the analysis of the data suggests, despite all the negative connotations, students use slangs inevitably as everyday language. Keywords: Slang; language; student; expression

Abstract

Podcasts have a become everywhere and easily accessible input for dialect learning it can enhance second the formal and semantic aspects of language. It learn aims to explore several unknown effects of podcast use through a metacognitive intervention for 12th grades of senior high school. This inquire about be valid the graphic quantitative strategy. This inquire about was collected online by utilize a questionnaire via Google Form that was distributed on WhatsApp and Instagram for senior high school students in Tambun Bekasi for the 2022/2023 academic year. Listening Exploratory approach and understanding of podcast using questionnaires, study diaries, and semi-structured interviews. Respondent of this study were 30 respondents, consisting of male 17 and female 13 senior high school students in SMK Karya Bangsa Tambun. The result find that language learners enjoy several benefits when using tuning usage podcasts. Additionally, learners have shown positive evaluations toward learning to listen through metacognitive techniques, indicating that it helped them become independent listeners. The findings of this research highlights the potency of applying technology-based listening learning in EFL contexts where are the many learners do not have sufficient authentic comprehensible. Abstract

The role of a teacher is very important because it is very influential in the development of students’ learning. Furthermore, teacher’s roles are very important because they can help teachers know students' understanding, help improve learning, and motivate students during learning process. The purposes of this study were to identify the types of teacher’s roles, to describe how the types are applied by the teacher, and to describe an active learning environment as the effect of the applied roles in The Queen’s Classroom series. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through observation sheets in the form of classifications of teacher’s roles in creating an-active learning environment in The Queen’s Classroom series. The results indicated that 3 types of teacher’s roles were found: teacher as controller, teacher as organizer, and teacher as assessor. Teacher as controller can be seen when Mrs. Ma created a group for this study material at the previous meeting. Mrs. Ma asked students to discuss it with their friends in a group. Teacher as organizer occurred when Mrs. Ma made the rule of class leader so that students scrambled to get excellent and satisfying grades. Teacher as assessor was exemplified when the teacher gave students better scores so that they were motivated to learn more actively. In learning process teacher can guide the students to express and think. Teacher roles can help students to active discussion and make interaction among others. Abstract

Globalization nowadays has significantly influenced the activity and endurance of organizations around the world; the business of dentistry has not been resistant. Dentists are the people who have to deal with various individuals during their practice, have to explain the treatment plans, instructions if any to the patients, and so on. Patients with multicultural backgrounds would need to be explained in the common connecting language; in India English is the connecting language. The difficulties faced by the dentists are that they are fluent in medical terms but have to be trained appropriately to explain in layman's terms to the patients for their better understanding in a place like Pondicherry (the study area) have patients from other countries also as it is one among the few places of Dental Tourism in India. Apart from this, there is no separate course in English prescribed for dental students in India. The General English Course which the students study till their senior secondary schooling would not be sufficient to understand a language like English and communicate. A Specific English course has to be the need of the hour for Dental students so that it could be useful and prepare them for their professional excellence. Hence, a study of this kind aims to identify the required communicative competencies for Dentists in practice. The findings will help in deciding the required skill sets for the recommendation of the ESP curriculum prescribed for Dentists. Keywords: communication, competencies, ESP, dentists, curriculum, etc.

Abstract

Speaking is the way of communicating to other people to exchange information. The human personality is seen as one of many factors that might affect speaking ability. Human personalities come in two varieties; introvert and extrovert. In this case, the researchers compared whether students with extroverted personalities would be more proficient in speaking than students with introverted personalities. The researcher used qualitative data with the use of a human personality questionnaire and followed by a speaking test interview with 30 respondents of Al-Chasanah Senior High School students. The findings found that there were 15 students with extroverted personalities and 15 students with introverted personalities. From that division, the researchers exposed only 3 students with extrovert personalities who got a low speaking score or below average compared with students with introvert personalities who got 7 students. It can be concluded that students with extroverted personalities are more proficient in speaking skills than students with introverted personalities.

Abstract

This research was aimed at improving students’ speaking ability using virtual role play. It was a virtual classroom action research conducted at 117 Junior High School Jakarta. The respondents of the research were 36 seventh grade students. The data were collected by using observation and giving speaking test. The learning syntax was designed for three stages, namely preparation, implementation, and reflection. The learning process related with preparing learning, organizing dialog scripts, giving the scripts to the students by WhatsApp, practicing the dialog, and assessing learning outcomes. To get the data of the research, the writer implemented virtual classroom action research for three cycles. In the first cycle, the students were practicing short dialogue scripts, and for the second cycle the students were given dialogue scripts in form of drama. Then, at the last cycle, the students were making and practicing their own dialog scripts. After conducting the research, the result showed that in the first cycle, the active students were 58% in which the average score is 68. In the second cycle, the active students were 74.%, and the average score is 75. In the last cycle the active students become 86.%, and the average score is 82. Finally, it could be concluded that by using virtual role play the active students were increasing during pandemic, and the students were able to create and practice new dialogs. Abstract

Using small group discussion as teaching method has been widely used by teachers but study about the use of small group discussion as part of Problem Based Learning in teaching speaking for ESP students in Indonesia context is quite limited found. Seeing the lack of the research the writer conducted it which has the aim to examine the effectiveness of using Small Group Discussion in teaching speaking skill for ESP students at UHAMKA. The research method used in this research was pre-experimental research. The sample was taken from the third students of Cardiovascular Engineering and Pre-test as well as Post-test were given to that class. The findings indicated t-is 9.69 and t- is 1.70, it means the Null Hypothesis ( is rejected and is accepted. In conclusion the Small Group Discussion as part of PBL is effective in teaching speaking skill for ESP students. Keywords: Problem based learning, Group discussion, ESP

Abstract

Both seeing and recognizing the crisis of moral values and character of students at the present time, absolutely, it becomes very important thing toward the educator. For instance, this happens to students entirely or partly at a certain school. In the future, it is expected to be a hope of the nation in leading the country. This research belongs to literature study. It means, it reviews of several sources of electronic books, electronic journals, and other references in supporting this article. Based on the results of the literature study, it can be concluded that character education needs to be strengthening by using SMART-based. SMART stand for: Setting-goal, Mannerly, Active, Respectful, and Thankful. So, the 21st century skills-based learning models used in the learning process as an effort to build the character of the student, of course, it is aligned to the needs and goals of learning. Then, the learning objectives can be done optimally. Thus, one of the goals of national education is the development of students’ character. Abstract

Teaching EFL students is a daunting task. Based on the preliminary study, the EFL students had an insufficiency in understanding the meaning that had caused them to misinterpret in understanding the specific text. This study aims to investigate how the utilization of online pictorial images improves students’ accuracy on domain-specific knowledge and how it plays a role in developing students’ when dealing with specific text. Thus, it may create a suitable teaching method for the English for Telecommunication I course. First-semester students in the academic year 2022/2023 who enrolled in English for Telecommunication I course at Politeknik Negeri Padang participated in this study. The qualitative method is used to analyze the data generated through the interviews to present and identify the role of online pictorial images in upgrading students’ understanding of specific knowledge. Abstract

The program of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka – Independent Learning, Independent Campus (MBKM) has been launched to equip the students with the skills and knowledge needed in professional settings. Kampus Mengajar, one of the programs in MBKM, allows the students to learn and contribute as teachers at schools. The study aims at evaluating the implementation of Kampus Mengajar as a part of MBKM in English Education Program at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative approarch. Questionnaires and interviews were administered to the students who have joined the program of Kampus Mengajar to explore the students’ perceptions on the implementation of the program and how the program can benefit them as students majoring in English education. The result obtained from the study indicate that the implementation of Kampus Mengajar not only help and facilitate the students with the knowledge and skills needed to be teachers but also promote the concept of autonomous learning.
