Abstract

This study examines coffee stalls (Warkop) as informal political spaces that reflect grassroots democratic practices in Indonesia. Warkop functions not only as a site of everyday social interaction but also as an arena for spontaneous and relatively egalitarian political discussions among people from diverse backgrounds. However, the relationship between the exchange of political ideas in these spaces and local practices of patronage and clientelism remains underexplored. This study employs an analytical literature review method by synthesizing various sources and secondary data on political dynamics in informal social spaces, with a focus on everyday political practices and power relations based on personal networks. The findings reveal a dual function of Warkop: on the one hand, it serves as a space for information exchange, public opinion formation, and the strengthening of socio-political networks among citizens; on the other hand, it acts as a medium for local elites to mediate, build, and sustain patronage practices. These findings suggest that Warkop represents an ambiguous form of grassroots democracy, as it encourages political participation while simultaneously reproducing transactional power relations.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the victory of Andi Sumangerukka in the 2024 Southeast Sulawesi Regional Head Election despite not being a native figure genealogically or culturally. This study aims to analyze Andi Sumangerukka’s winning strategy through the use of political capital in local political contestation. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that Andi Sumangerukka’s victory was influenced not only by economic strength, but also by his ability to build social networks, utilize digital media, adapt local cultural symbols, and establish a strong leadership image within society. In addition, the study found a shift in the political orientation of Southeast Sulawesi society from identity-based politics toward more rational considerations of candidates’ capacity and leadership quality. The study concludes that the effective management of various forms of political capital plays an important role in winning local political contestation.

Abstract

The phenomenon of pawning belongings among students living away from home is a survival strategy in the face of economic constraints. This study aims to understand the practice of pawning among students from Manggarai living in Malang City using Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical perspective. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques through in-depth interviews with seven informants, supplemented by observation and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results indicate that pawnbroking is generally carried out by pledging items of high economic value. The main factors driving this practice are economic constraints and urgent needs to meet basic necessities. Pawnbroking is chosen because it is considered a quick solution, although it has the potential to lead to financial dependence. From Bourdieu’s perspective, this practice is the result of the interaction between habitus, economic capital, and social capital within the context of migrant life.

Abstract

Social media, particularly platforms like X and Truth Social, has emerged as a strategic arena in contemporary international conflicts, enabling state actors to produce and contest political meaning beyond conventional diplomatic and military channels. This article examines digital narrative warfare in the Iran–United States conflict from June 2025 to April 2026 by analyzing the online political communication of U.S. President Donald J. Trump alongside Iran’s responses through official embassy accounts. Employing critical discourse analysis, the study identifies a marked asymmetry in communication strategies: Trump constructs a narrative of dominance through personalistic, hyperbolic, and spectacular rhetoric, whereas Iran responds with irony, linguistic minimalism, and satire as a form of digital counter-propaganda. The article argues that these practices represent a manifestation of ironic counter-propaganda within post-material-violence narrative warfare, wherein conflict is sustained through meta-narrative delegitimization rather than direct counter-framing. Theoretically, this research contributes to the conceptualization of second-order narrative delegitimization and advances the understanding of digital diplomacy as an instrument of symbolic power in contemporary international politics.

Abstract

This study examines the application of visual branding and Instagram engagement by graduation photography service providers and their possible association with students’ interest in using these services. The rise of social media, particularly Instagram, has made visual elements and digital interaction important in shaping consumer perceptions, including those of students. This research adopts an exploratory quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) on data from 100 student respondents who are active Instagram users in Makassar. The evaluation of the measurement model shows that the adapted instrument did not meet the required reliability and convergent validity thresholds: Cronbach’s Alpha, Composite Reliability, and Average Variance Extracted (AVE) fell below the recommended cut-offs, with some negative values. Consequently, the resulting structural path coefficients are preliminary (exploratory) and cannot be interpreted as significant effects. The main contribution of this study is methodological: the instruments measuring visual branding and engagement in the context of Makassar students require refinement, partly due to limited response variation (ceiling effect) and sample size. This study provides a basis for refining the instrument and collecting further data before conclusive causal testing can be conducted.

Abstract

This paper examines the 2001 political crisis, which culminated in the impeachment of President Abdurrahman Wahid, as a pivotal moment in Indonesia’s post-Reformasi democratic transition. The main issue examined is the nature of the political relationship between Megawati Soekarnoputri and Hamzah Haz, representing the nationalist PDIP and the Islamic PPP respectively. The aim of this research is to analyse the form of elite compromise that occurred in the formation of national leadership in 2001. The research employs a qualitative case study design, involving document and media analysis and in-depth interviews with key informants. The findings indicate that the Megawati–Hamzah Haz relationship reflected an elite settlement through rapid compromise, a shared understanding of the rules of political competition, and mutual security guarantees between elites. In conclusion, the 2001 settlement arose from pragmatic calculations rather than ideological convergence, and played a role in creating political stability until 2004.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate policies for the development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Majene Regency using the Realistic Evaluation approach with the context–mechanism–outcome (CMO) framework. The research employed a qualitative descriptive-exploratory method to gain an in-depth understanding of policy needs and implementation dynamics in local MSME development. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders, including local government officials, MSME owners, academics, financial institutions, and community representatives. The findings indicate that Regent Regulation Number 11 of 2020 and Regent Regulation Number 33 of 2022 contributed positively to sustaining the economic resilience of MSMEs during periods of crisis and post-crisis recovery. However, policy implementation remains largely administrative and top-down, limiting its capacity to promote sustainable business transformation. In the context dimension, low digital literacy, limited market accessibility, and weak institutional capacity reduced policy effectiveness. In the mechanism dimension, insufficient business mentoring and limited multi-stakeholder collaboration constrained the development of an adaptive empowerment ecosystem. In the outcome dimension, the policies mainly generated short-term improvements in productivity and economic stability without significantly strengthening competitiveness and entrepreneurial self-reliance.

Abstract

Economic activities concentrated in Ambon City’s Mardika Market reveal a shift toward women playing an increasingly dominant role in the trade sector and the management of household finances. However, this shift does not automatically eliminate the role of men or the traditional values that have long underpinned the community’s social life. This study aims to analyze the distribution of gender roles within the Amarima Hatuhaha community on Haruku Island, Central Maluku, known as the “community of five sister villages” (Pelau, Kailolo, Rohomoni, Kabau, and Hulaliu). This community upholds the value of “orang basudara” (siblings) as the foundation of its social, economic, and traditional life. The study employs a qualitative approach using field observation and in-depth interviews with merchants and workers from the Hatuhaha community who are active at Mardika Market in Ambon City. The findings indicate that gender-based division of labor remains distinct, with men predominantly working in physically demanding sectors such as port laborers and motorcycle taxi drivers, while women dominate the trade sector. Women bear a double workload because they combine domestic and economic roles, yet they exercise significant control over the family’s finances. Customary norms are adaptive and non-restrictive; rather, they serve as a moral guide rooted in social solidarity. Gender relations in the Hatuhaha community are complementary and reflect the functional equality characteristic of the indigenous communities of Maluku

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Penta Helix collaboration in the development of Kandua Raya Waterfall tourism in Kedang Ipil Village, Kutai Kartanegara Regency. Kandua Raya Waterfall has significant potential as a nature and culture-based ecotourism destination due to its natural beauty, biodiversity, and the identity of the indigenous community. However, its development still faces various challenges, including limited infrastructure, low investment, weak stakeholder coordination, and threats of land conversion caused by the expansion of oil palm plantations and mining activities. This study employed a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation studies as data collection techniques. The data were analyzed thematically to identify the roles, contributions, and obstacles faced by each actor within the Penta Helix framework, consisting of government, academia, the private sector, communities, and the media. The findings reveal that the government, communities, academia, and media have actively contributed to tourism development, while the private sector remains suboptimal and tends to prioritize extractive industries. Therefore, strengthening multi-stakeholder collaboration, enhancing community capacity, and implementing environmental protection policies are essential to achieve sustainable tourism development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategic role of the Chief Business Officer (CBO) in decision-making and its impact on operational effectiveness at PT Tourezia Cakra Inspira. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, using data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation with informants directly involved in the company's work processes. The results indicate that the CBO plays a very dominant role not only at the strategic level but also in daily technical and operational decisions. This situation creates a high degree of decision centralization, which creates bottlenecks in the workflow, slows the approval process, reduces the speed of execution, and reduces the latitude for line managers to make independent decisions. On the other hand, while this centralization helps maintain control and decision accuracy, it is not balanced with the operational demands of service companies that require rapid and flexible responses. This study concludes that a company's operational effectiveness will be more optimal if there is a more structured system of delegation of authority, a clearer division of roles, and strengthened capacity of middle management so that work processes can run more efficiently without compromising the company's strategic direction.
