Abstract

This study aims to examine the ethics of gender roles in the household from the perspective of the Qur'an, focusing on reconstructing the roles of men and women in addressing the problems of gender injustice and the phenomenon of fatherlessness. This research employs a literature study method by analyzing relevant Qur'anic verses, contextualized with classical and contemporary tafsir, as well as the thoughts of scholars such as Al-Zamakhshari, At-Tabari, Muhammad Abduh, Amina Wadud, Asma Barlas, and Ziba Mir-Hosseini. The findings show that the Qur'an affirms the spiritual and moral equality of men and women, and emphasizes the principle of partnership through the concepts of zawj (complementarity) and qiwāmah (functional responsibility). The ethics of gender roles in the household are built upon the principles of ‘adl (justice), ihsan (benevolence), flexibility in role distribution, and maslahah (public interest), so that the husband-wife relationship is not hierarchical but complementary according to conditions and social contexts. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to affirm that the Qur'an provides a dynamic ethical framework to realize justice and family harmony, while also opening space for ijtihad in responding to contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This study examines the dissenting opinion in a child custody case following apostasy at the Tanjung Karang Religious Court, Class 1A, as a reflection of the dynamic interplay between Islamic family law, substantive justice, and child protection principles. The main research problem concerns how the judges’ legal reasoning patterns are formed within this context of differing opinions and to what extent the dissenting opinion contributes to reinforcing the principles of maslahah mursalah, maqasid al-shari‘ah, and the best interest of the child. Employing a qualitative methodology with a juridical-empirical approach, this study adopts a case study design on Decision No. 948/Pdt.G/2023/PA.Tnk, supported by in-depth interviews with the presiding judges and comparative analysis of national and international jurisprudence. The findings reveal two dominant paradigms in judicial reasoning: the normative-formalistic paradigm, which emphasizes hifz al-dīn (protection of religion), and the substantive-contextual paradigm, which prioritizes the child’s welfare as the core orientation of justice. The dissenting opinion functions as a form of rechtsvinding (judicial legal discovery), bridging textual legal interpretation and social realities to achieve more humanistic justice. This study recommends further comparative research across Muslim-majority countries such as Malaysia, Egypt, and Morocco to enrich the global discourse on Islamic law that is adaptive and responsive to the best interests of the child.

Abstract

The low interest in literacy among Generation Z has led to limited knowledge and understanding regarding early marriage. This condition contributes to the increasing prevalence of early marriage practices, which remain difficult to control, particularly within urban Muslim societies. This study aims to explore Generation Z’s perception and literacy level concerning early marriage practices, as well as to examine the gap between literacy (knowledge) and social reality (practice). This study used a descriptive qualitative method. It had three steps. First, the researcher prepared the research tools and plans. Second, data were collected through interviews and documents about Generation Z’s views on early marriage in an urban Muslim society. Third, the data were analyzed by organizing, coding, and interpreting the information to identify themes related to how Generation Z views early marriage. The findings reveal that Generation Z’s literacy on early marriage remains relatively low. The main factors include a lack of personal awareness, insufficient parental guidance, and limited socialization from the government and religious institutions. This lack of literacy contributes to the rise of early marriage cases, which often result in divorce due to emotional and economic immaturity. The study highlights the importance of promoting critical literacy and contextual education among Generation Z to enhance their awareness of the risks of early marriage and to encourage them to make more mature, well-informed marital decisions.

Abstract

This study examines the values of moderation in Pappaseng Ogi (Bugis traditional wisdom) and their correlation with Quranic teachings in the context of fostering harmonious societal living. Employing content analysis methodology, this research aims to explore the role of Pappaseng Ogi as a medium for disseminating humanistic values and civilizational principles. The findings reveal a significant congruence between the moderation values inherent in Pappaseng Ogi and the principles of moderation espoused in the Quran. The study successfully identifies five key values of Pappaseng Ogi: assiwollong-pollongeng, assisompungeng, assipakalebbireng, assiamase-maseng, and assifakario-riongeng, which potentially constitute a culture-based model of moderation. These findings demonstrate how indigenous wisdom can be integrated with universal teachings to cultivate moderation and social harmony. This research contributes to the development of a culturally-rooted understanding of religious moderation, with potential practical applications in building social cohesion, promoting tolerance, and managing conflicts. While primarily focused on Bugis society, the findings suggest potential adaptability to other cultural contexts, thus offering broader implications for the study of religious moderation in diverse societies

Abstract

Violence against women remains an escalating phenomenon and a critical issue in contemporary social development. The Qur’an presents numerous verses that directly and indirectly addresses matters of violence, gender relations, and the protection of women. However, many classical exegetical traditions remain influenced by patriarchal constructs, often producing interpretations that are misaligned with principles of justice and gender equity. This article analyzes the feminist Qur’anic hermeneutics of Badriyah Fayumi concerning verses related to violence against women, particularly QS al-Nisā’ [4]:19, QS al-Nisā’ [4]:34, and QS al-Isrā’ [17]:32. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach grounded in library research and content analysis, the study examines Fayumi’s major work, Tubuh, Seksualitas, dan Kedaulatan Perempuan. The findings reveal that Fayumi develops a contextual-feminist interpretive framework centered on Maqāṣid al-Syarīʿah, substantive justice, and women lived experiences. Her exegesis rejects the legitimacy of domestic violence, expands the conceptual boundaries of sexual misconduct, and affirms women’s autonomy as moral agents. Fayumi’s contributions offer a significant foundation for constructing a humanistic and progressive Qur’anic interpretation that aligns with gender equality and ethical integrity. This study argues that feminist tafsīr is not a counter-narrative to religion, but rather a revitalization of the Qur’an’s ethical message aimed at fostering a more just society free from gender-based violence.

Abstract

The study of hadith in digital spaces reveals the emergence of diverse forms of oral exegesis on the hadith concerning secret charity—when the left hand does not know what the right hand gives. This research focuses on two questions: how is the oral exegesis of this hadith presented on YouTube, and how does audience design shape its form? A qualitative method with the theoretical framework of audience design was employed to analyze five lecture videos of popular preachers. The findings show variations in delivery: Gus Mus and KH. Marzuqi Mustamar uses a relaxed style with themes of exemplary scholars for audiences of students and rural communities; Ustadz Abdul Somad emphasizes stories of the Companions for a direct digital audience; while Ustadz Firanda Andirja and Ustadz Syafiq Riza Basalamah highlight scriptural proofs and warnings against riya for urban congregations. These findings affirm that audience design influences the form of oral exegesis, yet the substance of the hadith remains preserved. The contribution of this study is to demonstrate that oral exegesis represents a creative adaptation in conveying hadith through da’wah.

Abstract

The low level of students’ interest and academic outcomes in the subject of Islamic Religious Education and Character Education highlights the need for more interactive learning innovations. This study aims to improve student engagement, interest, and academic outcomes through the implementation of a LearningApps-based  Digital Scavenger Hunt. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles involving 27 students of Class IX.5 at SMPN 1 Bone-Bone, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data were collected through observation, learning interest questionnaires, and learning outcome tests, and were analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods. The results showed improvements in teacher and student activities, reaching the very good category in Cycle II. Students’ learning interest increased from 76.85% to 82.09%, while learning outcomes improved from an average score of 76.67 with 59.25% classical mastery to 85.55 with 92.59% classical mastery. These findings suggest that the implementation of a LearningApps-based Digital Scavenger Hunt contributed to improvements in students' engagement and academic outcomes. This study implies that Islamic Religious Education teachers can adopt gamification-based digital strategies, particularly for abstract topics such as the Hereafter, to foster active participation and deeper conceptual understanding. Furthermore, the findings offer practical guidance for integrating game-based learning platforms into character education curricula.

Abstract

Gender discourse in contemporary Islam faces tension between efforts to maintain the authenticity of tradition and the need to respond to demands for gender justice. Patriarchal bias in classical interpretation has marginalized women’s perspectives, creating an urgent need to reinterpret Qur’anic verses related to gender relations. This study aims to comparatively analysed the thoughts of Zainab al-Ghazali and Fatima Mernissi in formulating the concept of gender in Islam. The comparative model used covers three main dimensions: the epistemology of interpretation, the gender hermeneutic approach, and the practical implications in the contemporary Muslim context. The method used is descriptive-comparative with content analysis of the primary works of both figures, namely Naẓarāt fī Kitāb Allāh and Women and Islam: An Historical and Theological Enquiry. The findings show that Zainab developed a reformist-traditionalist approach through the concept of gender complementarity that emphasizes moral equality within the framework of role differentiation, with a naqliyyah epistemology rooted in the text. In contrast, Mernissi uses a deconstructive approach based on historical-sociological analysis to critique patriarchal bias in the Islamic exegetical tradition, relying on a critical epistemology that places the socio-historical context as the key to interpretation. Both approaches have significant contributions but also face their respective epistemological and methodological limitations. This study recommends the integration of both approaches to build a gender-responsive Qur’anic hermeneutics, with practical implications for the development of family jurisprudence and gender equality policies, especially in the context of moderate Indonesian Islam.
