Abstract

This article discusses the construction of the Muslims youth identity in cafes. Cafes as a public habitus that is constructed modern and considered not 'Islamic' does not mean that it has no relationship with Islam. Therefore, this article seeks to answer the question of what is the relationship between Islam, cafes, and social media? So, to what extent do Muslims youth access cafes? Finally, how do Muslims youth construct their identity of piety and youth in a café? To answer these questions, the authors conducted fieldwork in the form of observations and interviews with café owners and several youths with a narrative approach. Then public space theory, identity theory and digital production theory were used to analyze research data. The results of this study found that the relationship between cafes, Islam and social media manifested in the activities of young Muslims themselves, especially in consuming café public spaces such as enjoying food and beverage products, wifi facilities, prayer facilities, and taking pictures. Muslim youth not only access the symbols of café modernity and post them on social media, but also access the café's worship facilities. These three practices, both in consuming symbols of café modernity such as café architectural design and painting art on coffee (latte art), then uploading it to social media and doing prayer practices in cafes are ways for young people to construct their pious and youthful identity while in the café. This finding deconstructs the long-held view by some scholars or the public that cafes are considered public spaces that have no connection with Islam.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the process of cultural acculturation and the dynamics of structure and agency in the practice of Rimpu and Sanggentu fashion among Mbojo women in Bima and Dompu, West Nusa Tenggara. The research questions focus on how the use of Rimpu reflects the process of cultural acculturation, how individual and collective agency influences social structure, and how the symbolization of fashion shapes cultural identity. The method used is a qualitative ethnographic approach with participant observation techniques, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation. The results of the study indicate that Rimpu and Sanggentu are products of hybridization between local culture and Islamic values, mediated by agency, both from elites such as Sultan Bima I and from local women. New social structures are not formed through coercion, but through interaction between humans so that they can provide meaning and ideas that are created and used periodically or repeatedly. This study contributes to the development of Giddens' structuration theory in the context of local Indonesian culture and encourages an approach to cultural preservation that is oriented towards meaning and active community participation.

Abstract

This article discusses Iran’s geopolitical and ideological interests in Indonesia within the context of international relations and cultural diplomacy. As a country with Shiite-based ideological power and regional geopolitical ambitions, Iran views Indonesia—the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation—as a strategic partner to expand its influence. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review and secondary data analysis to examine Iran's strategies in building relationships via educational, cultural, and economic cooperation institutions. The findings show that Iran’s strategy in Indonesia reflects a blend of soft diplomacy and geopolitical interests aimed at strengthening Iran’s position in Southeast Asia. However, Iran’s ideological penetration faces resistance from Indonesia’s Sunni-majority population and domestic political dynamics that emphasize religious moderation and national stability.

Abstract

This study examines the participation of the Chinese community in Sarang, Rembang, in the Javanese-Islamic traditions of takziyah (funeral condolence) and tahlilan (communal prayer for the deceased). The research addresses the gap in understanding how minority groups, particularly non-Muslim Chinese Indonesians, engage with religious practices in multiethnic, rural settings. Using a micro-ethnographic approach, the study involved 16 participants from seven extended Chinese families, comprising both Muslim and non-Muslim individuals. Data was collected through participant observation, interviews, and document analysis to explore how these traditions contribute to social cohesion and integration. Key findings reveal that Muslim Chinese participants fully engage in these traditions' spiritual and logistical aspects. In contrast, non-Muslim participants contribute primarily through the material and social support, emphasizing the inclusive nature of takziyah and tahlilan. The study highlights the flexibility of these practices, which accommodate varying levels of participation, enabling individuals from different religious and ethnic backgrounds to connect. Material contributions were identified as key in bridging social and religious divides and promoting inclusivity within the community. The study underscores the potential of localized traditions as models for fostering social harmony in diverse, multiethnic societies.

Abstract

The development of information technology has given rise to a digital generation that is increasingly connected to various social media platforms. Instagram, as one of the most popular social media platforms, is closely tied to millennials because it provides information quickly, practically, and accessibly through mobile phones. This condition opens new opportunities for the development of Islamic da’wah to transform from conventional patterns into more creative and innovative models. The Instagram account @Kufislami represents this transformation by presenting Kufi calligraphy as a form of decorative art that serves as a medium for modern visual da’wah. This study aims to examine how Kufi calligraphy is used as a medium of digital da’wah that appeals to the millennial generation. The method employed is a case study with Charles Sanders Peirce’s visual semiotic approach, which analyzes signs, symbols, and meanings in the Kufi calligraphy works published through the @Kufislami account. This method explores how the use of visual signs in synergy with design elements such as form, composition, and color generates visually appealing and meaningful aesthetics. The research was conducted by randomly selecting samples of calligraphy posts from 2022 to 2023, featuring excerpts from verses of the Qur’an. The findings indicate that the exploration of Qur’anic verses in the form of Kufi calligraphy produces unique, aesthetic, and contextual visual da’wah messages, thereby expanding the reach of Islamic da’wah in the digital era. Khat Murabba employed in the design of Kufi calligraphy is a decorative khat that is highly flexible and can be developed into various design forms and modern trends favored by young generations.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the uniqueness of the tradition of electing Muhammadiyah administrators in Southeast Sulawesi. Research data were obtained through participatory observations, in-depth interviews, and document reviews. Data analysis was performed using the Miles and Huberman paradigm combined with the Von Eckarberg hermeneutic phenomenological analysis model. The results of this study indicate that the succession of the Muhammadiyah Southeast Sulawesi Regional Leadership was held through an election mechanism with a voting system to elect 13 formators. Although the process was full of dialectical thoughts flowing from the participants of the deliberation, the process involving 142 voters, representatives of 16 Muhammadiyah Regional Leaders, took place elegantly, democratically, and without noise. The elegance of deliberation in the Muhammadiyah environment occurred not only because of the rationality of the Muhammadiyah people but also because the egalitarian collegial system in Muhammadiyah was very prominent. This made it easy for them to make decisions by consensus when appointing the Chairperson and Secretary. The description of a number of sosial analysts regarding the Muhammadiyah Congresses in Yogyakarta, Makassar and Solo which took place without "intrigue" and political interest, was also reflected in the Muhammadiyah Southeast Sulawesi Regional Conference as an event to elect the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership for the 2022-2027 period. The success of Muhammadiyah Southeast Sulawesi in creating a peaceful situation in the leadership succession event was supported by three factors: egalitarianism and mainstreaming of consensus, organizational commitment, and consistency in implementing organizational rules

Abstract

Gender-based violence in Indonesia is increasingly concerning, despite the existence of numerous laws and regulations aimed at its regulation. This violence significantly impedes development, as its multifaceted impact hinders women's participation, compromises health, and diminishes autonomy across political, economic, social, and cultural spheres. The research addresses several key questions: 1) What is the extent of legal protection against gender-based violence in Indonesia? 2) How is gender-based violence addressed within Islam? 3) How can legal protection against gender-based violence be optimized from an Islamic perspective? The research methodology is qualitative, using a normative approach and drawing from secondary sources like literature accessed through library research. Data analysis is conducted through descriptive analysis techniques. The findings of the research indicate that in Indonesia, legal protection against gender-based violence is addressed through various regulations, and similarly, within Islam, there have been numerous reforms pertaining to gender-based protection found in the Quran and hadith. Strategies like theological education, moral guidance, gender equality promotion, and family development with a gender perspective can enhance legal protection against gender-based violence in line with Islamic principles. Aligned with these findings, the article emphasizes the vital importance of preventive measures to reduce the rise of gender-based violence.

Abstract

Islamic spirituality and the philanthropic spirit of society cannot be viewed as generic and instantaneous. The purpose of this article is to explore the factors that shape the intrinsic motivation of the millennial generation in carrying out philanthropic activities. This article is written using qualitative methods using data obtained from related literature. The data used as analysis material is in the form of secondary data obtained from previous studies, journals, and reports from related institutions such as Charities Aid Foundation and Badan Amil Zakat Nasional RI. The data obtained are analyzed by content analysis methods, at this stage the content under study is interpreted with a focal point on the meaning in accordance with the purpose of the study. The findings of this study show that the high motivation of Muslim millennial philanthropy is driven by the motivation that arises in each of them. Philanthropic activities among Muslim millennials, in addition to being a form of piety, are also a criticism of philanthropic activities so far. The limitation of this study lies in the type of data used, namely secondary data so that it has not been able to describe the state of the millennial generation. Therefore, further analysis using primary data is needed to obtain more accurate results.

Abstract

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of life. Not only the decline in the economic situation, but it has also had an impact on the emergence of social problems such as the high rate of early marriage. Early marriage has been a scientific concern for a long time. However, scientific studies have not been able to reduce the rate of increase in the number of children marrying early. The loss of the rights of children who should receive proper education, play and the right to protection are forced to be “bound” in a marriage. The purpose of this article is to add references to solving the problem of early marriage which has been long problematic on an international, national and regional scale. This article discusses the objective conditions of early marriage during a pandemic and criticizes the implementation of strategies for preventing and handling cases of the early child marriage. The data in this study were taken from the main data in the form of in-depth interviews with competent informants. Additional data was taken from existing data at the related office in North Luwu Regency along with the news from online sites, became a reference in this article. This study establish that the number of early marriages has rising due to the widespread use of social networks and changes in daily activity patterns. For future studies, it is recommended to consider the determinant factors in different locations and in a wider scope.

Abstract

This research aims to uncover the prophetic intelligence aspect through the interpretation of Surah Āli-'Imrān [3]:190-191 as part of the manṭiqiyah verses. This research implements the Ma'nā-cum-Maghzā interpretation through four stages of analysis: linguistic, grammatical analysis, intra- and intertextual analysis, micro and macro-historical analysis, and contextual analysis. These four analyses aim to reveal the historical and contextual significance messages of Surah Āli-'Imrān [3]:190-191. The research findings demonstrate that logic plays a vital role in unravelling the most profound messages in each Quranic verse. Linguistically, the phrase Ūlil Albāb encompasses human faculties that are logical and spiritual (contemplating and remembering Allah), thus it is inaccurate if the thinking process is deemed separated in the interpretation process of revelation texts. Historically, several cases from the Hadith narrations were discovered that illustrate how the Prophet responded to several similar questions but with different answers. This exhibits that the Prophet underwent a thinking process to tailor his answers to the context and the questioner. However, reasoning alone is insufficient without the spiritual intuition because thinking without spiritual discipline can yield value-free thoughts. This kind of contemplation was bequeathed by the Prophets which the author coins as the prophetic intelligence aspect. Based on these research findings, the significance messages of Surah Ali-'Imran [3]:190-191 assert that reason is not value-free; instead, it constitutes part of the revelation interpretation apparatus
