Abstract

The classical interpretation of the Qur'an has been the primary foundation for understanding the sacred text of Islam for centuries. However, in modern times, criticism has emerged of this approach from contextual commentators, who argue that the Qur'anic text should be understood dynamically, considering the context of the time and location where the revelation was revealed. This article examines the contextualization of Surah al-Anfal verse 17 concerning war through a historical-critical analysis, particularly regarding the asbab al-nuzūl (the reason for the occurrence of the consequences). Second, this verse emphasizes that jihad is not limited to physical warfare but encompasses the struggle against injustice. Third, in the spiritual dimension, this verse teaches submission to God and awareness of God's will. This research recommends applying the ethical and spiritual principles in this verse to address the challenges facing Muslims today, such as justice and the protection of rights..

Abstract

The development of interpretation from era to era has given rise to sectarianism, absolutism, and blind fanaticism in interpretation. This is highly risky and has excellent potential to become a deviation in interpretation, thus giving rise to the study of critical interpretation. In this context, the Tafsir al-Kasysyaf, known for the intense subjectivity of its interpreter, is particularly susceptible to absolutism and blind fanaticism, which are closer to deviations in interpretation. Therefore, it is worthy of critical study. Al-Dzahabi, an expert in critical interpretation, outlines the critical research here. The object of study focuses on Q.S. al-Nisa' verse 164 because it discusses the nature of Allah's speech that the Mu'tazilah opposes, thus providing an overview of how the mufassir defends the theology he adheres to regarding this verse. Using library research and descriptive analysis methods, this research article aims to examine al-Dzahabi's criticism based on the focus of the study on the interpretation of Q.S. al-Nisa' verse 164 in al-Kasysyaf — whether it is included in al-dakhil or not, and about the forms of al-dakhil that contradict al-ashil. This study found that az-Zamakhsyari's interpretation of the verse is categorised as al-dakhil in the form of riwayat and raiso or ijtihad. Further research recommendations include expanding the analysis to other interpretations influenced by theological tendencies and developing a methodology of interpretation criticism as a scientific evaluation tool. This study encourages academics and exegesis practitioners to apply an objective, critical approach to maintain validity and avoid errors in understanding the Quran.

Abstract

In today's digital world, cyberbullying has become a severe issue, especially among teenagers, which can negatively impact their mental health and identity. This study explores the application of fiqh principles in interpreting ecological verses in Tafsir Marah Labid by Imam Nawawi al-Bantani. The methodology used is a qualitative approach with content analysis, focusing on identifying and interpreting fiqh principles in an environmental context. The results show that Imam Nawawi al-Bantani indirectly applies fiqh principles such as “la darara wa la dirar” and “al-masyaqqah tajlibu al-taysir” in explaining environmental verses. This interpretation highlights the importance of maintaining ecological balance as a human responsibility as a caliph. The fiqh approach in Tafsir Marah Labid is highly relevant to current environmental conservation efforts and the importance of Islamic values education for ecological preservation among the younger Muslims.

Abstract

Contemporary society often experiences stress, anxiety, and depression due to technological advances and rapid social change. In the Qur'an, Surah Al-Baqarah/2: 183, fasting is described as a comprehensive practice that helps individuals cope with stress and improve mental health through reflection and changes in existential awareness. This study aims to explore self-transformation and harmony between humans and nature through fasting, using approaches from the Qur'an and science. The method used is qualitative descriptive analysis, utilizing relevant literature on fasting, mental health, and human interaction with the environment. The research findings indicate that fasting is a spiritual ritual and teaches simplicity and respect for nature, which supports the balance between humans and the environment. The recommendations from this study are to encourage the practice of fasting to achieve better mental and ecological health, and to expand studies on the impact of fasting in the context of mental health and the environment.

Abstract

The practice of using Quranic verses as amulets among Indonesian Muslims indicates complex issues related to religious understanding and the concept of monotheism. This study aims to examine this phenomenon and its implications. Using qualitative methods, data were collected through a literature review and field observations, and then analyzed from an Islamic theological perspective, specifically the concept of monotheism and the views of Islamic scholars. The results indicate that this practice persists, influenced by local traditions and mystical beliefs, and fueled by limited understanding. While some view it as a spiritual endeavor, Islamic scholarship warns that believing Quranic verses have independent power can deviate from the creed. The study recommends strengthening the understanding of the creed through more effective Islamic da'wah and education.

Abstract

Recent national surveys in Indonesia, including reports from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and independent research institutions, indicate a decline in religious tolerance among students, raising concerns about the effectiveness of religious education in fostering religious moderation. This study examines the Qur’anic foundations of religious moderation by mapping students’ understanding of selected Qur’anic verses on tolerance and analyzing their relationship with religious moderation among students at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. In this study, mapping refers to an empirical assessment of students’ perceptions and comprehension of tolerance-related Qur’anic verses and their association with moderating religious attitudes. Employing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 352 students across five faculties using stratified systematic sampling. Correlation and regression analyses were applied to examine the relationship between the variables. The findings reveal a positive and statistically significant relationship between students’ understanding of Qur’anic tolerance verses and religious moderation (r = 0.505, p < 0.01), indicating a moderate strength of association. Regression analysis further confirms the model's robustness. The results suggest that stronger comprehension of Qur’anic principles of tolerance is associated with higher levels of religious moderation, shaped by curricular content, lecturers’ pedagogical approaches, and students’ social environments. These findings provide empirical support for strengthening Qur’an-based educational policies and instructional strategies to promote religious moderation within State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN).

Abstract

The diversity of interpretations of the Qur'an has played a significant role in enriching Islamic thought throughout history. Among the methods that have attracted attention are Sufi allegorical (ishārī) and Shia esoteric (bāṭinī) interpretations, both of which emphasize the revelation of the text's inner meaning. However, ambiguity often arises regarding the methodological similarities or differences between the two. This study aims to examine the fundamental differences between these two approaches and their implications for understanding the Qur'an. It addresses whether Sufi and Shia interpretations share a common methodological framework for accessing the inner meaning or follow different paths. A comparative analytical methodology is employed, drawing on classical exegetical sources from both traditions. Examples are analyzed based on consistent criteria, including linguistic context, theoretical foundations, and doctrinal assumptions. The results reveal a fundamental difference; Sufi interpretation is rooted in spiritual contemplation and symbolism, while Shia interpretation is tied to Imami doctrine. Therefore, it is recommended that Islamic studies scholars refrain from generalizing about the forms of esoteric interpretation and conduct further studies to explore how these differences influence inter-school dialogue in the modern era.
