Abstract

The translation is an essential aspect of communication between speakers from different linguistic backgrounds. The main job is to render an original text from a source text (ST) into a target text (TT), with an unalloyed commitment to maintain the source language message and meaning and avoid fidelity erosion. In the light of this, every translator has an internally structured ideological disposition which usually comes into play in translation. This study takes a look at the extent to which ideology impacts translation. The study examined the function of ideology in translation. It was implemented through news headlines from Aljazeera-Egypt, translated from English into Arabic. The choice of the news headlines is based on the communicative role of headlines in representing the real news and the extent to which translators usually input their ideologies and ideologies of news organizations involved in translating headlines. The study adopted a simple descriptive approach, and data were analyzed using the Van Dijk approach to the discourse analysis. Findings were made in the study. One significant discovery is the use of deletion and addition process by the news headline translators to alter the meaning and ideology of the main text in the course of shifting to the ideology of the translated text. The alteration could be maximal, partial, or minimal, affecting lexical words, grammatical words, or phrases. Meaning is usually changed, and ideological change is usually apparent. Ideology highlights a notable function in translation, especially when the translator is subjected to function according to the dictates of an organization, such as Aljazeera News.

Abstract

This study offers a cognitive metaphorical analysis of the events framing the Tunisian Revolution in English and Arabic news discourse between 2010 and 2014. The study addressed two central questions: (1) How has the Tunisian Revolution been metaphorically represented in English and Arabic political news discourse based on the cognitive domain of journey? What are the similarities and differences between the metaphorical representations in the same news discourse? The conceptual integration network emerging in the analysis is single-scope as the two input spaces of journey and revolution were demonstrated to have different organizing frames. Specifically, only the frame of journey is projected to organize the blend. Findings showed that anchoring the concept of revolution to that of journey has created a kind of semantic tension that helped journalists to evoke emotional responses and manipulate the discursive function of metaphors as persuasive tools. Because of the cross-space mappings between journey and revolution, nearly all concepts related to the revolutionary experience proved to have a counterpart in the journey frame. Equally important, the results of comparing and contrasting cognitive metaphors in English and Arabic news discourse could offer insights into the way language develops based on a cognitive basis. Therefore, learners of both English and Arabic could access the system governing language learning concerning the formation of semantic networks based on different conceptual frames, thereby enhancing their metaphorical competence. Developing learners’ metaphorical competence would help them in analyzing, reconstructing, and translating diverse textual data

Abstract

The general objective of this research is to examine the relevance of the rules of assimilation in Arabic with religious, social values. This study uses a qualitative approach with an ethnolinguistic approach. The data were collected through in-depth and repeated reading of the Arabic language's assimilation rules, which allegedly contained social religious values. The data is taken from two syntax books, Alfiyah Ibn Malik and Jami'ud Duru:s al-Arabiyyah. Data analysis steps include classification, reduction, verification, and inference. The study results indicate a relevance between the morphophonemic rules of assimilation in Arabic and social, religious values. These values include (1) making it easy and not making it difficult, (2) prioritizing the core over the extra, (3) the strong tend to beat the weak, (4) being willing to sacrifice for harmony, (5) choosing the lightest harm, and (6) willingness to adapt in society. The relevance between Arabic morphophonemic rules and socio-cultural values reinforces the ethnolinguistic theory. The language dimension can describe society's social and cultural dimensions and social structure

Abstract

This descriptive library research describes the active research topics and methods most interested postgraduate students majoring in Arabic in master's and doctoral degrees. It explains the representation of research dynamic map in Arabic learning supported by corpus linguistic analysis. This research applied two research approaches; the quantitative approach was used to describe the frequency of words used by the postgrad students in their academic writings analyzed by Antconc software. A qualitative approach was used to explain the representation of corpus-based findings. The data are taken from abstracts of Arabic academic writings belonging to one of the Indonesian public universities’ digital libraries. The results showed that students' most popular research topics in the last five years are education topics, namely materials and textbooks development; second, linguistics topics such as naḥwu and tarkīb, and language skills is mahārah kalam. This study shows that students tend to research naḥwu and tarkīb based on speaking skills material. The most widely used students research method was Research and Development (R RD). Students tend to develop teaching materials with various perspectives, as RD was a trend of research method. As a result, students are expected to gain an overview of the dynamic discourse map and research trends in Arabic learning as a foundation or preliminary research to select and determine research topics and methods for the final project. To avoid similarity, plagiarism, and saturation, one must choose variations in topics and types of research methods and follow existing trends.

Abstract

This study's assessment model for the Arabic speech competition involved three competent judges. Each of them assessed the same three components, namely al fashahah (fluency), lubbul maudhu' (content/theme discussion), and al harakah (participant movement, including participant expressions). The subjects in this study were all 24 participants in the Arabic speech competition at IAIN Ponorogo in 2019. All of these participants came from MA around Madiun. It is possible to issue differences between scores given by the three judges, considering that the range of values for each component is between 50 to 100. Scoring with a reasonably wide range could affect the consistency of the assessment. It is crucial to estimate the reliability coefficient of the judges' assessment of the Arabic speech contest. This study uses a quantitative approach because the primary data are scores from the judges of the Arabic language competition. The reliability estimation uses a variance analysis approach whose procedure is based on generalizability theory (G-Theory) through the G-Study concept with a multifaceted design. This theory can improve the instrument's quality by testing several sources of variance to make decisions and the consistency of the results of the generalizability coefficient. The data analysis results conclude that the assessment instrument used in the Arabic speech competition in this study is reliable or still feasible to use. The feasibility is based on the validity and reliability of the instruments used. The analysis of some experts regarding the instrument content claims that it was valid. In addition, the reliability coefficient of the combined score of the Arabic speech competition assessment is 0.96708. Therefore, it concludes that the assessment instrument used in this study is reliable.
