Abstract

Military-Civilian Synergy: A Sociological Analysis of Defense Strategy in Ensuring National Energy Infrastructure Security. Energy security has shifted from a predominantly techno-economic concern to a strategic component of national defense. This article aims to analyze military involvement in energy-security programs through a sociological perspective, with emphasis on the interaction among military institutions, managers of National Vital Objects (Obvitnas), and local communities surrounding energy infrastructure. The study applies a qualitative descriptive approach using library research based on national regulations, defense-strategy literature, and sociological reports related to energy infrastructure. The analytical framework combines securitization theory and civil-military relations to examine how energy issues are positioned within national defense. The discussion shows that military involvement extends beyond physical protection of refineries, transmission networks, and distribution routes toward territorial development, logistics support, disaster mitigation, and community-based early warning. Its effectiveness is strongly influenced by social acceptance, dialogue, and the strengthening of social capital. The study concludes that a resilient energy-defense strategy requires a transformation from security-heavy physical guarding toward a more integrative and human-centered approach in which the military, energy managers, and communities share responsibility for safeguarding national energy infrastructure.

Abstract

One of the main focuses of science education is developing 21st-century skills, including critical thinking ability. This skill is crucial for individuals to be able to evaluate information objectively and make decisions logically and rationally. However, the low level of environmental literacy among students in Indonesia also affects their critical thinking skills and their concern for various environmental issues. Therefore, innovations in learning that are contextual and oriented toward students’ needs and engagement. The implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model combined with a student-generated local issue approach in this study is intended to optimize students’ critical thinking skills, environmental literacy, and their sense of concern for the environmental conditions around them. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a quantitative approach conducted over two cycles. In each cycle, the action was carried out in one meeting. The subjects of this study consisted of 38 eight-grade students at SMPN 1 Rambipuji. The data collection techniques used in this study included tests, questionnaires, and observation. Tests were used to measure critical thinking ability, questionnaires were used to assess literacy levels, while observation was conducted to determine the implementation of learning and student activeness during the learning process. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the improvement that occurred in each cycle. The implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with the student-generated local issue approach is expected to provide a positive impact in the form of improved environmental literacy, ecological concern, and student’s critical thinking ability.

Abstract

This study investigated the implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL) supported by contextual student worksheets (LKPD) to develop sixth-grade students’ critical reasoning and collaboration skills in a nutritious food topic. A Classroom Action Research design was employed by referring to the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which comprises planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 27 sixth-grade students of SDN Mojoroto 1. Data were gathered through tests, observation instruments, and documentation, then examined using descriptive analysis and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The findings revealed a progressive improvement in students’ critical reasoning and collaboration skills following the implementation of PBL with contextual LKPD. The mean critical reasoning score rose from 63.33 in the pre-cycle stage to 73.33 in Cycle I and 81.85 in Cycle II. Students’ collaboration skills also developed from the initial condition and reached the expected development category by the end of the intervention. The Wilcoxon analysis yielded a significance level below 0.05, indicating a statistically significant change after the learning intervention. These findings suggest that PBL supported by contextual LKPD may be used as an alternative approach for strengthening critical reasoning and collaborative learning habits in elementary science education, particularly when discussing nutritious food.

Abstract

Green buildings can become active nodes in urban energy systems, yet efficiency or annual net-zero balance alone does not ensure service continuity during grid disruptions. This study examines how renewable energy, storage, and load flexibility should be integrated to strengthen urban energy resilience. A directed systematic literature review covered 30 open-access journal articles published from 2020 to 2026. Full texts and DOI records were verified, and evidence was extracted by context, intervention, indicator, finding, limitation, and contribution to anticipation, disturbance absorption, recovery, and adaptation. Renewable energy improves local availability, but its resilience value is constrained by variability and the ability to operate during outages. Storage bridges temporal mismatches between generation and demand, while flexibility reduces peaks, shifts consumption, and prioritizes critical loads. Their combined value is greatest when baseline demand has first been reduced, an energy management system coordinates operation, and outage scenarios are tested. The study proposes autonomy hours, critical-load coverage, unserved energy, islanding success, state-of-charge reserve, and recovery time as key metrics. For Indonesia, implementation should proceed in stages for tropical green buildings and vital facilities through critical-load audits, submetering, commissioning, islanding tests, and district-level energy aggregation.

Abstract

Scientific creativity is an important skill for students to possess as they prepare to face the era of globalization. However, the current reality of education shows that scientific creativity in many countries—especially in Indonesia—still faces serious challenges. Based on these challenges, this study aims to analyze students’ scientific creativity in Design Thinking-STEAM learning on the topic of Earth’s rotation. The analysis was conducted to identify differences in students’ scientific creativity skills before and after the Design Thinking-STEAM instruction. This study utilized a scientific creativity assessment instrument based on the three dimensions of the Scientific Structure Creativity Model (SSCM) to determine the effectiveness of Design Thinking-STEAM instruction on students. A total of four items were developed, integrating the trait, process, and product dimensions, and were validated by two experts. Subsequently, the items were administered during the pretest and posttest phases of the study. The data obtained from the pretest and posttest were used to assess students’ scientific creativity before and after the instruction through an effectiveness test. Before conducting the effectiveness test, a prerequisite test was first performed. The data were then analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test, yielding a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05; thus, it can be concluded that there is a difference in scientific creativity before and after participating in the Design Thinking-STEAM learning program.

Abstract

Scientific creativity is an essential competency that needs to be developed among students to meet the demands of the 21st century. However, science learning is often still focused on problem-solving and conceptual mastery, which may limit opportunities for students to develop their creativity optimally. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a Design Thinking-STEAM-based Student Worksheet (SW) that is feasible for facilitating students’ scientific creativity. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE development model integrated with Design Thinking. Product feasibility was assessed through expert validation using questionnaire instruments. The qualitative data consisted of comments, suggestions, and feedback from the validators, while the quantitative data included validation scores, readability test results, and pretest-posttest scores. The SW was validated by two science teachers and its readability was tested with 30 eighth-grade students. The results showed that the SW achieved feasibility percentages of 93.05% for media validation and 92.47% for material validation, while the user readability test yielded a score of 90.29%. The validated SW was subsequently implemented with 26 seventh-grade students using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The pretest and posttest results indicated a significant difference, as evidenced by the Wilcoxon test, which yielded a significance value of less than 0.050. Overall, the developed SW was found to be feasible for use as an instructional material for teaching the water cycle and was able to facilitate students’ scientific creativity.

Abstract

Schistosoma haematobium is responsible for urogenital schistosomiasis which is still a significant public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. To better inform targeted interventions and control measures, it is important to know how the intensity of parasite infection and clinical diagnostic indicators differ by socio-demographic groups. The study was carried out in Ebonyi Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Nigeria with a population of mainly farmers, traders and civil servants. Ethical clearance was obtained from the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ozalla and informed consent was obtained from the respondents. Using a survey design, urine reagent strips for micro-hematuria and proteinuria were used to screen 1,110 subjects. 269 screen positive people were interviewed using a questionnaire that included socio-demographic, health and behavioral information, as well as biological samples. Mid-day urine samples were centrifuged to assess Schistosoma haematobium eggs and Giemsa stained thick blood smears were examined under oil immersion microscopy for Plasmodium parasites. Data were analysed statistically at 5% level of significance using SPSS version 20.0, chi-square test, ANOVA and Student's t-test were used. No significant differences were seen in infection intensities (p>0.05) of Schistosoma haematobium and malaria with educational level or occupation, with primary-educated, civil servants, and farmers having higher mean infections. In conclusion, micro-hematuria was the most common diagnostic index (63.2%). There was no significant gender difference for clinical indicators (p>0.05) and males had higher levels of proteinuria and reported symptoms. Micro-hematuria, proteinuria, reported blood and painful urination were significantly different between age groups (p<0.05) with the highest levels observed in children and young adults. The combination of rapid point-of-care indicators, age-targeted mass drug administration, and school-based health education will play a key role in control of urogenital schistosomiasis in endemic communities.

Abstract

Creative thinking skills are essential skills that students need to develop and master because creative thinking enables students to understand, manage, and solve problems. However, students’ creative thinking skills have not yet reached an optimal level. This study aimed to determine the differences in students’ creative thinking skills between those who learned using the Case Based Learning (CBL) model and those who learned using the Discovery Learning (DL) model on the topic of Environmental Change. This study employed a quasi-experimental method with a non-randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of Grade X students at a public senior high school in Muaro Jambi during the 2025/2026 academic year, selected using purposive sampling. Data on students’ creative thinking skills were collected using an essay test based on the indicators proposed by Greenstein. The data were analyzed using a One-Way ANCOVA. The results showed a significant difference in students’ creative thinking skills between the CBL and DL groups (p = 0.017; p < 0.05), with a moderate effect size (Partial Eta Squared = 0.113). Both CBL and DL were associated with improvements in students’ creative thinking skills; however, the CBL group achieved higher posttest results than the DL group. The most prominent creative thinking indicators in the CBL group were Curiosity, Flexibility, Elaboration, and Imagination, whereas Fluency and Originality were the most prominent indicators in the DL group. These findings indicate that CBL can be considered as an alternative learning model for developing students’ creative thinking skills, particularly in Environmental Change learning.
