Abstract

This study aims at finding out non-Arabic vocabulary in the Qur'an and the perspectives of one of the most authoritative classical Qur’anic scholar, Imām as-Suyūtī on the discourse. Although the Qur'an was revealed to all mankind, the language it employs is Arabic. Even so, there are so many (perceived) non-Arabic vocabularies used in conveying the messages of the Almighty. This phenomenon has attracted the attentions of researchers to study the non-Arabic vocabularies used by the Qur’an which is called muʻarrab. The taʻrīb, the word from which muʻarrab is derived, refers to a process of formation of words in Arabic after being transferred from foreign languages. The contact the Arabs made with other people in the past can explain the emergence of muʻarrab. Amongst these people were the Persians, the Africans, the Romans, the Syrians, the Nabataeas, and others. With the contact (iḥtikāk), the Arabs found some new commodities they did not pose. They transferred new unavailable words into Arabic with some adjustments. This language phenomenon is reflected in the Qur’ān, as is confessed by as-Suyūṭī in the findings of this reseach.

Abstract

This paper analyses the development of Arabic Syntax, starting from classical period up to modern one which is intuitively synthesis-pragmatic. The epistemology of classical and modern Arabic syntax is focused on the thoughts of Imam Sībawaih and Ibrāhīm Muṣṭafā to represent each A’jam and ‘Arab. This research uses the method of epistemology-comparative-history with procedure of intertext analysis. Method used by classical figures to compile Naḥwu are samāʻī, qiyāsī, ijmā’, taʻlīl, ta'wīl, istiḥsān and istiṣḥāb with both philosophical and theological approaches. Meanwhile, methods used by modern figures in compiling Naḥwu is tanẓīriyyah and taṭbīqiyyah. This research confirms what researchers explain that the contribution of Sībawaih to the development of Naḥwu lays on the classification of i’rab for noun (ism) into raf ‘, naṣb and khafd. This so-established theory is simplified by Ibrāhīm Muṣṭafā who says that iʻrāb consists of dammah and kasrah. He does not take fathah into account of i'rab.

Abstract

This study tries to trace the meaning of wabah and tho‘un as they are used in Arabic and Indonesian language. To do so, three diachronic corpora were utilized as resources. They are Malay Concordance Project corpora (MCP), Leipzig Corpora collection, and WebCorp. MCP was used to determine the word wabah and tho’un in pre-modern era. Leipzig corpora was used to demonstrate the collocation and concordance of the studied words. WebCorp was used to trace their used in the modern era and in more recent texts. This study revealed that wabah is originally from وباء, a word that is borrowed from Arabic waba‘. The used of wabak was found in 1500’s, in pre-modern texts. This word furthermore becomes wabah in modern uses. Unlike, the words tho‘un (read: ṭāʻūn) was unknow in the pre-modern era. In modern era, the word wabah and tho‘un are used in context related to health, not far from their original meaning. The findings of this study furthermore, pave the way for the importance use of corpus for the development of Indonesian words etymology and its lexicography.

Abstract

This article aims at describing the role of translation context of inter-cultural dialogues by tracing it from the translations of literary works. Translation is referred to as transmitting something, i.e. concepts, notions, meanings, from a language to other language. Thus, translating literary works does not only mean changing the language of the works but also transferring the cultures of the society whose language is used in works to other societies. This is because literary works come from, and reflect the cultures of their societies. So, the translations of literary works can be regarded as dialogues among different cultures. Apart from difficulties, translation of literary works with varieties of genres has shown its significant role in creating dialogues among different cultures and civilizations. The process of influencing and being-influenced, particularly between Western literature and Arabic literature has triggered the rise and the development of new genres and features of literature which were absent in any one side. It is here that the literary translation works to transfer moods, mentalities, genius, and models of relationships between different emotions and thoughts.

Abstract

The research aims to find out the manifestations of gender bias in the indications for the use of domestic products that are frequently used and circulated in the Arab world. It is known that they often use the formulas of orders to address the feminine, especially for products related to food, laundry and spices. This indicates that the Arab Arab society views women as human beings whose jobs are limited to housework only. The research uses the descriptive approach by examining the uses of command formulas in the products circulating in the Arab community. The results of viewing 15 products indicate that 9 of them use the masculine commands, 5 of them use the feminine commands, and one of them uses the infinitive. Abstract

This article aims to discuss the complexity occurs within the case of reposition. Conceptually, the case of reposition is similar to the notion of at-taqdīm wa at-ta’khīr in Arabic linguistic tradition. Previous studies concerning this case have been conducted, primarily to elaborate structural aspect of the case. This article aims to analyze three aspects of language, namely style (deviation), structure (relation), and meaning (implication). The result of this research shows that at least three linguistic aspects (style, structure, meaning) occur within the case of reposition at the same time. Those three aspects work simultaneously (mutazāmin wa mutaẓāfir) in each linguistic unit within the case. The reposition of a certain linguistic unit represents the deviation of the case, the connection attached between this unit to other existing units represents the relation of the case, whereas both deviation and relation can give direct implication to produce a certain meaning.

Abstract

The study of linguistics has experienced quite dynamic developments in the contemporary era. Linguistics is the main tool in dissecting or studying texts. One representation of the branch of linguistics that has attracted the attention of scholars or language researchers is stylistics. Stylistics is one of the linguistic disciplines that are quite comprehensive or interdisciplinary (macro linguistics). This is because stylistics includes elements of other linguistic disciplines such as semantics, phonology, syntax, and morphology. The stylistic study, which was originally used to discuss literary texts, is currently developing and is included in the study of the text of the holy Koran. This study seeks to explore the stylistics of the Koran in surah al-Ikhlas. The aim is to find out and reveal the use of language and textual linguistic aesthetics in surah al-Ikhlas. The research method used is qualitative-descriptive. The findings in this study show that the stylistics in the surah al-Ikhlas include several al-mustawayat, namely; al-mustawa al-nahwi (syntactic level), al-mustawa al-sarfi (morphological level), al-mustawa al-sauti (phonological level), al-mustawa al-dalali (semantic level), and al-mustawa al- tashwiri (imagery level). Through some of this al-mustawayat we can get meaning and deep understanding in the form of the oneness or unity of Allah, with all the power implied in the meaning of the surah al-Ikhlas can refute the negative stigmas of the polytheists and can also increase the firmness of a Muslim's faith.
