Abstract

This research aims to analyze idiom translation strategies in the Netflix subtitles of the film Habibie and Ainun and to compare them with the machine translation generated by DeepSeek-V3.2 based on Baker’s (1992) classification. Idioms expressions are one of the most problematic areas in audiovisual translation due to their literalness and cultural embodiment. Descriptive qualitative is used as the research methods in this research with 22 Indonesian idioms classified according to Fernando (1996) to which a comparative analysis was made investigate the use and diffusion of translation strategies, namely idioms of similar meaning and form, idioms of similar meaning but different form, paraphrase, and omission. The results suggest that the paraphrase strategy is also the dominant one across both human and machine translations, reflecting a stronger emphasis on achieving meaning understanding rather than idiomatic form. The strategies of idioms of similar meaning and form and idioms of similar meaning but different form in the TL are tendencies rather than strict rules, and they vary from case to case depending on the existence of idiomatic equivalents in Arabic, while omission is not identified this indicates that the source idiom are preserved for coherence. The results also show that human translators consider the narrative setting and emotional meaning, while machine translation focuses mainly on semantic equivalence. This study offers to Indonesian–Arabic translation studies and demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-based translation systems in controlling contextual and culture-specific idioms.

Abstract

Being in disaster-risk areas frequently affected by floods, landslides, and climate change, schools increasingly seek age-appropriate ways to introduce environmental awareness while sustaining meaningful early English exposure. However, early-grade EFL classrooms often have limited resources to integrate eco-centric themes into instruction. This study aimed to establish expert-based validity evidence for an interactive eco-themed e-storybook series designed for Indonesian Grade 1 EFL learners. Using a two-round modified Delphi approach, 12 experts (teachers, language specialists, and multimedia specialists) evaluated the series through structured questionnaires and open-ended feedback, followed by targeted revisions after Round 1. Quantitative judgments were analyzed using content-validity indices (I-CVI and S-CVI/Ave) and Aiken’s V to estimate item relevance and agreement, while qualitative comments were analyzed thematically to identify revision priorities. After revision, expert judgments converged, indicating that the series is linguistically accessible for beginners, pedagogically feasible for routine-based classroom use, ecologically interpretable through child-friendly actions, and multimodally coherent when audio and interactive features remain purposeful. Qualitative feedback prioritized stronger text–image alignment for key expressions, simplified page layouts to minimize overload, improved replay and accessible glossary supports, and child-safety safeguards (e.g., ad-free, break reminder). Overall, the findings support the series as a validated instructional resource oriented to integrating early EFL learning with eco-literacy meanings.

Abstract

This study examines the defense mechanisms and narcissistic behavior of the main character in R. F. Kuang’s novel Yellowface (2023) using Karen Horney’s concepts of the idealized self and neurotic needs, as well as Christopher Lasch’s ideas about cultural narcissism. This research explores how June protects herself from envy and guilt by using various forms of self-deception. It also explores how the social media-driven publishing world shapes June’s narcissistic behavior. This research uses qualitative-descriptive methods and deep text analysis. The focus of the study is on the emotional insecurity, the need for recognition, and the dependence on public opinion. Findings show that June creates an idealized image of herself as a successful writer and maintains it through self-deception. At the same time, the publishing industry that focuses on visibility, approval, and performance affects her by pushing her to judge herself and her value through attention and compliments. When this recognition is lost, she feels anxiety, fear, and emotional instability. This study suggests that self-deception and narcissistic behavior in Yellowface are not just personal weaknesses, but psychological strategies created by internal conflict and a competitive cultural environment.

Abstract

This study investigates how sustainability messages are represented in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbook for Indonesian elementary learners and the extent to which these messages reflect SDG/ESD priorities. Using qualitative content analysis of multimodal content with particular attention to visual illustrations, the study examines the Grade IV textbook My Next Words to identify recurring environmental themes and the sustainability practices promoted. The findings show that sustainability is primarily framed through everyday, learner-accessible routines, including reducing single-use plastic during shopping; maintaining cleanliness at home and school; choosing low-impact mobility (e.g., cycling); saving energy by turning off lights; and caring for plants through watering and tree planting, which collectively model ecological responsibility for young learners. However, the coverage remains uneven: more systemic sustainability dimensions, especially renewable energy literacy, structured waste management (sorting and recycling routines), and explicit, solution-oriented climate change learning, are limited, resulting in sustainability being communicated more as individual moral behavior than as interconnected environmental challenges requiring informed understanding and collective action. The study recommends strengthening future textbook editions by integrating more balanced sustainability dimensions through age-appropriate tasks, projects, and visuals linked to local contexts, alongside teacher support to help learners move from “doing” sustainability to understanding its broader environmental rationale, thereby enhancing environmental literacy and SDG/ESD-aligned learning in primary EFL education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the author’s worldview toward betrayal in the short story Sirrul Marquise. Before exploring the author’s worldview, this study first discusses the historical and social background that underlies the creation of the work. The study employs a descriptive qualitative research method by textual data analysis and interpretation it through the lens of Lucien Goldmann’s genetic structuralism theory. The data consist of primary sources in the form of the contemporary Arabic  short story titled Sirrul Marquise and secondary data obtained from related journal articles and previous studies. Through this method, the researcher found that Nabil Al-Othmani, the author of “Sirrul Marquise,” was influenced by Morocco’s  social conditions, particularly those related to power struggles and the territorial conflict in the Sub-Saharan region. The short story reflects the author’s worldview on betrayal through four main dimensions: betrayal of social institutions, parental betrayal of children, betrayal of moral and humanitarian values, and betrayal of oneself. Each form of betrayal illustrates a deeper social criticism against the moral decay and crisis of trust in modern Moroccan society. This research contributes to expanding the discourse on betrayal in literary studies, especially within the framework of genetic structuralism, by connecting individual moral collapse to collective social structures. The findings also provide implications for further application of genetic structuralism in modern Arabic literature studies, particularly in works addressing postcolonial identity and social conflict. It is hoped that this study can fill the research gap concerning betrayal in macro social contexts and inspire future studies to explore Goldmann’s theory more comprehensively in various literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the mechanisms of lexical access in native speakers from a neurolinguistic perspective, with a particular focus on the processes of activation and selection of lexical representations in spontaneous spoken discourse. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data consisting of naturally occurring utterances produced by five native speakers of Indonesian. The data were collected through recorded conversations and analyzed by identifying surface-level linguistic markers, such as pauses, repetitions, self-repairs, and lexical stress, which reflect the dynamics of lexical access. The findings indicate that the process of lexical activation does not occur in a linear manner; rather, it involves competition among lexical representations prior to the final selection stage. This phenomenon is theoretically consistent with models of speech production that emphasize the interaction between activation and lexical selection control. This study contributes to theoretical neurolinguistics by presenting an analysis based on natural speech data in the context of the Indonesian language. The findings enrich the understanding of lexical access mechanisms in spontaneous speech production and demonstrate that surface-level linguistic phenomena can serve as a basis for interpreting cognitive processes in language production. The novelty of this study lies in its examination of lexical access mechanisms based on spontaneous spoken data, positioning lexical stress as a prosodic indicator of the lexical selection stage—an aspect that has rarely been addressed in previous neurolinguistic studies, which are generally based on experimental tasks.

Abstract

The study aims to demonstrate how Nizar Qabbani's poem Tauud Sya'rii Alaika uses hair as a symbol to depict love and close relationships and the experience of losing someone. The study employs Roland Barthes' semiotic framework to demonstrate how hair transforms from its basic meaning to its deeper cultural meaning. The poem uses hair as a physical body part to create a symbolic framework that conveys emotional experiences and painful memories and future aspirations. The research employed descriptive qualitative methods together with Barthes' semiotic analysis technique, which examines the signs and meanings and myths present in the poem's text. The primary data source is the poem from the Al-Hubb poetry anthology, which contains the Nizar Qabbani work about love. The secondary data sources included relevant books and scientific articles and journals. The researchers collected data through literature study and text analysis while using the Miles and Huberman model to analyze data through three steps, which included data reduction and data presentation and drawing conclusions through the verification process. The analysis shows that a woman's hair is not merely understood as a physical part of her body but rather transcends its biological dimension with her lover. Hair is presented as a symbol of love, emotional closeness, and loss, enriched by the imagery of autumn and the stars as a representation of the woman's inner journey and emotional story. This simple yet meaningful symbol is used to express the dynamics of the profound journey of love and separation between herself and her lover, while also reflecting the values and cultural traditions surrounding them.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate differences in the production of received pronunciation vowels /ɑː/ and /æ/ between Mandar EFL learners and native speakers, as well as the distribution of vowel patterns across participants' academic levels, using a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach. There are 5 words in this current research that contain the initial vowels/ɑː/ and /æ/: 'afternoon', 'answer', 'apple', 'animal', and 'actor'. To examine the vowel difference, this research used audio recordings from 10 participants: 5 from the 5th semester and 5 from the 1st semester. The audio recordings were analyzed with PRAAT to measure openness using F1 and tongue position using F2. The formant data were then normalized using the Lobanov normalization to avoid confounding by gender, age, and physiological variables. The analysis was conducted to figure out the distinction pattern of vowel articulation by Mandar and native speakers, and the possibility of vowel shift and merger. The results indicate a significant difference in vowel production between Mandar and native speakers, as confirmed by the t-test. The articulatory distinction between a Mandar native speaker and a native speaker is reflected in the articulation of the vowel /æ/ that shifts in all contexts. Meanwhile, the vowel /ɑː/was articulated differently across contexts by Mandar speakers. The findings showed that Mandar speakers exhibit vowel shifting and merger, which are caused by the assimilation of L2 sounds to L1 and by the quantity-quality of L2 input. Moreover, the results appear to support the SLM-r hypothesis in phonetic formation in L2 acquisition.

Abstract

Merdeka Mengajar Platform (MMP) was released to support the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. While this platform aims to improve teacher competence and learning effectiveness, research into the extent to which English teachers adopt and practice MMP is limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze English teacher's beliefs and practices in implementing MMP, identify the alignment and misalignment between beliefs and practices, identify the challenges faced, and explore the strategies used in adapting teaching practices to MMP principles. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and analysis of learning documents. The results showed that English teacher has a positive belief in MMP as a useful tool in improving pedagogical skills, facilitating differentiated learning, and enriching teaching methods. However, there were challenges in implementing MMP include low active student participation, limited facility support, and varying levels of teacher understanding of the platform. To overcome these challenges, the English teacher applied strategies such as the use of diverse learning media, differentiated assessments, and intensive communication with parents. The results of this study confirm the need for continuous support in the form of professional training and provision of adequate infrastructure to optimize the use of MMP. Further studies are recommended to examine the long-term impact of MMP on teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes in English language learning.

Abstract

The aim of this project was to integrate the learning process in Banyumasan culture for  designing and evaluating the local wisdom-based Students' Activity Book (SAB) for basic English instruction in Indonesia. This study has a number of steps, including need analysis, design, expert validation, and field testing, utilizing a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on Borg and Gall's model. Three main themes originate from the analysis of the results: pedagogical effectiveness, product feasibility, and needs analysis and cultural relevance. Teachers, according to starting polls, believe that local culture should be incorporated into English learning materials because textbooks that only emphasize Western culture often discourage students from learning the language. Expert validation showed an agreement rate of 88 percent, indicating that the Students’ Activity Book was appropriate to be used. The materials, including local stories such as The Legend of Baturraden and traditional foods like mendoan, were considered ideal supports for both language and cognitive development among young learners. The field trial also showed that students using the book achieved a higher N-Gain score (0.72) than those in the control group (0.45). These findings suggest that connecting English learning with students’ cultural background makes learning more meaningful and effective. This study offers a glocalized model that combines global English learning with local identity in line with the Kurikulum Merdeka, and highlights the importance of local wisdom in improving language skills while preserving cultural pride.
