AL IBRAH is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and innovation in Arabic language education. The journal welcomes submissions on Arabic language teaching, classroom innovations, and various applied linguistics subfields. Abstract

This study analyzes the strategic role of teachers as facilitators in overcoming barriers to learning Arabic speaking skills at MA Assalam Tuban, an Islamic boarding school adopting the Gontor model. A qualitative case study design is used with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, followed by thematic analysis using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that teachers act as designers of a communicative and immersive environment by applying the direct/ummah method and organizing structured speaking activities such as muhadasah, khitobah, drama, and intensive language programs. Linguistic and non-linguistic barriers are addressed through religiously grounded motivation, a comprehensive oral (syafahi) assessment system, and a pesantren culture that normalizes mistakes, enabling first-year students to reach functional fluency within about six months.

Abstract

This study investigates the difficulties encountered by students in learning Arabic writing skills at SMA Islam Kepanjen. The research emphasizes three main aspects, namely the implementation of Arabic writing instruction, the learning difficulties experienced by students, and the teachers’ efforts to overcome these challenges. This study adopted a qualitative case study design. Data were gathered through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that the teaching of Arabic writing skills at SMA Islam Kepanjen has been implemented relatively well. However, students still encounter several difficulties, particularly in writing Arabic letters, arranging sentences, applying grammatical rules, and expressing ideas in written Arabic. Students’ low interest and motivation also become significant challenges. To address these difficulties, teachers have undertaken several efforts, such as providing motivation and guidance, conducting additional writing exercises, and allocating extra instructional time. يهدف هذا البحث إلى تحليل صعوبات تعلم مهارة الكتابة باللغة العربية لدى طلاب المدرسة الثانوية الإسلامية كيبانجين. ويركز التحليل على ثلاثة جوانب رئيسية: عملية تعليم مهارة الكتابة، وأنواع الصعوبات التي يواجهها الطلاب، واستراتيجيات المعلمين في معالجتها. استخدم هذا البحث المنهج الكيفي من خلال تصميم دراسة الحالة، وجُمعت البيانات عن طريق الملاحظة، والمقابلات، والوثائق. أظهرت النتائج أن تعليم مهارة الكتابة قد نُفِّذ بصورة جيدة نسبياً، بيد أن الطلاب لا يزالون يواجهون صعوبات خاصة في كتابة الحروف العربية، وترتيب الجمل، وتطبيق القواعد النحوية، وانخفاض الدافعية. ولمعالجة هذه الصعوبات، بذل المعلمون جهوداً متعددة منها تقديم حصص إضافية، وتنفيذ تدريبات في الكتابة، وتخصيص وقت إضافي لتحسين مهارة الكتابة لدى الطلاب.

Abstract

This study aims to develop Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)-based nahwu test items using the Wordwall platform and to examine their effectiveness in improving students’ understanding. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects of this study were 20 students at Pondok Pesantren Muadalah Al-Fahd, Banyuasin Regency. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests (pretest and posttest). The results showed that the HOTS-based nahwu test items developed using Wordwall met the criteria of validity and feasibility. Furthermore, the effectiveness test indicated a notable improvement in students’ understanding, as reflected in the increase between pretest and posttest scores. The use of Wordwall also increased student engagement and learning motivation in nahwu learning. Therefore, the development of HOTS-based test items using Wordwall can serve as an innovative alternative to improve the quality of nahwu learning in Islamic boarding schools. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan soal nahwu berbasis Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) menggunakan media Wordwall serta menguji efektivitasnya dalam meningkatkan pemahaman santri. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Research and Development (R&D) dengan model ADDIE yang meliputi tahap analisis, desain, pengembangan, implementasi, dan evaluasi. Subjek penelitian adalah 20 santri di Pondok Pesantren Muadalah Al-Fahd Kabupaten Banyuasin. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara, angket, dan tes (pretest dan posttest). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa soal nahwu berbasis HOTS yang dikembangkan melalui media Wordwall memenuhi kriteria valid dan layak digunakan. Selain itu, hasil uji efektivitas menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman santri yang ditunjukkan melalui perbedaan signifikan antara nilai pretest dan posttest. Penggunaan Wordwall juga terbukti meningkatkan keterlibatan dan motivasi belajar santri dalam pembelajaran nahwu. Dengan demikian, pengembangan soal berbasis HOTS menggunakan media Wordwall dapat menjadi alternatif inovatif dalam meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran nahwu di pesantren.

Abstract

This study examines the functional role of fi'il muḍāri' i'rāb in Surah An-Nāzi'āt through an integrated naḥw-tafsīr framework. Previous studies tend to treat i'rāb as a purely formal grammatical category, detached from semantic interpretation, while exegetical studies often overlook grammatical precision. This study addresses that gap by demonstrating that i'rāb is not merely a syntactic marker but an active constituent of Qur'anic meaning. Using a qualitative library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach, the study identifies thirteen fi'il muḍāri' forms in the surah, classified across three i'rāb categories: marfū', manṣūb, and majzūm. The analysis reveals a clear correlation between each inflectional form and its semantic function within the surah's eschatological discourse. The marfū' form, which constitutes 84.6% of the identified forms, operates through istiḥḍār al-ḥāl, rendering future and past events as vivid, immediate realities for the reader. The manṣūb form encodes gradual spiritual transformation within a non-confrontational da'wah strategy. The majzūm form compresses and relativizes worldly time, reinforcing the surah's affirmation of the Hereafter's certainty. These findings demonstrate that the integrated naḥw-tafsīr framework is analytically productive and replicable for examining how grammatical form shapes Qur'anic meaning across different surahs.تتناول هذه الدراسة الوظيفةَ الدلاليةَ لإعراب الفعل المضارع في سورة النازعات، وذلك من خلال إطار منهجي تكاملي يجمع بين علم النحو وعلم التفسير. وقد دأبت الدراسات السابقة على معالجة الإعراب بوصفه ظاهرةً نحويةً شكليةً مجردةً من أبعادها الدلالية، في حين تغفل الدراسات التفسيرية في الغالب عن الدقة النحوية. وتسعى هذه الدراسة إلى ردم هذه الفجوة، بإثبات أن الإعراب لا يُعدّ مجرد علامة تركيبية، بل هو ركيزة فاعلة في تشكيل المعنى القرآني. واتبع البحث المنهج الوصفي التحليلي في إطار الدراسة المكتبية النوعية، وقد رُصد في السورة ثلاثة عشر فعلاً مضارعاً، صُنِّفت وفق ثلاث حالات إعرابية: الرفع، والنصب، والجزم. وتكشف نتائج الدراسة عن ارتباط وثيق بين كل صيغة إعرابية ووظيفتها الدلالية في السياق الأخروي للسورة. فالمرفوع، الذي يمثل ٨٤،٦% من الأفعال المرصودة، يُحقق معنى استحضار الحال، إذ يُقرِّب الأحداث الماضية والمستقبلية إلى وعي المتلقي ويجعلها حاضرةً أمامه. أما المنصوب فيُجسّد مسيرة التحول الروحي التدريجي ضمن أسلوب دعوي غير مواجِه. وأما المجزوم فيُقلِّص الزمن الدنيوي ويُنسِّبه، مُعززاً يقينَ الآخرة الذي تقوم عليه السورة. وتُثبت هذه النتائج مجتمعةً أن الإطار التكاملي بين النحو والتفسير منهجٌ ناجعٌ وقابلٌ للتطبيق في دراسة العلاقة بين الصيغة النحوية والمعنى القرآني عبر سور متنوعة.

Abstract

This study aims to classify and analyze na’t (adjectival) patterns  mufrad, jumlah, and syibh al-jumlah in Sūrah al-Wāqi’ah and to examine their functional roles in constructing eschatological meaning. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach on all 96 verses, data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model with classification guided by al-Ghalyāyinī’s functional parameters distinguishing at-tawḍīḥ (clarification) in definite nouns from at-takhṣīṣ (specification) in indefinite nouns. The findings reveal that na’t mufrad predominantly encodes at-takhṣīṣ, conveying permanent properties (at-thubūt) that construct stable, sensory-rich images of paradise, while syibh al-jumlah functions as a spatial and temporal anchor situating eschatological realities within concrete dimensions. The dominant asymmetry of at-takhṣīṣ (37 of 43 entries) over at-tawḍīḥ (6 entries) reflects a coherent rhetorical strategy in which specification projects the desirability of paradise, while economy of description in punitive passages projects finality and inevitability. This study contributes a systematic syntactic-functional model applicable to Qur’anic linguistic analysis and offers a practical framework for advanced naḥwu instruction in Arabic language education.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of iḍāfah (genitive construct) in Arabic from a comparative-historical (diachronic) perspective. It aims to analyze the types of iḍāfah in Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), to examine how each period approaches these types, and to identify similarities and differences between them. The study employs library research and comparative-historical linguistic analysis, drawing on six purposively selected primary sources  three classical (al-Zajjājī, Ibn Ājurrūm, Ibn Mālik) and three MSA (Caspari, Ryding, Badawi et al.). Data analysis followed the diachronic comparative method via Verhaar and Hopper-Traugott’s framework as elaborated by Crowley and Bowern. Both periods agree on two fundamental types: iḍāfah maʿnawiyyah and iḍāfah laḏẓiyyah. However, Classical Arabic employs systematic, detailed exposition with subcategories, while MSA adopts a descriptive-communicative orientation prioritizing functional usage. This difference is classified as Substitution in Hopper and Traugott’s theory, indicating a shift in analytical perspective rather than disappearance of the grammatical category. This study contributes to Arabic comparative linguistics by bridging classical and modern traditions.تتناول هذه الدراسة ظاهرةَ الإضافة في اللغة العربية من منظور مقارن-تاريخي ديكروني، إذ تهدف إلى تحليل أنواع الإضافة وطرائق تناولها في العربية الكلاسيكية والعربية الفصحى الحديثة. اعتمدت الدراسة منهجين هما البحث المكتبي والدراسة اللغوية المقارنة-التاريخية، مستندةً إلى ستة مصادر أولية ثلاثة منها تمثّل العربية الكلاسيكية وثلاثة تمثّل العربية الفصحى الحديثة. وتوصّلت الدراسة إلى أن كلا الفترتين تتّفقان على تقسيم الإضافة إلى نوعين أساسيين: الإضافة المعنوية والإضافة اللفظية. غير أنهما تختلفان في أسلوب التناول: إذ تميل العربية الكلاسيكية إلى العرض التفصيلي المنهجي، بينما تميل العربية الفصحى الحديثة إلى التوجّه الوصفي التواصلي. وصُنِّف هذا الاختلاف ضمن فئة الاستبدال وفق نظرية هوبر وتراوغوت

Abstract

This study examines how low Arabic literacy contributes to the misunderstanding of Islamic banking concepts in rural Indonesia. The research addresses the gap between the growth of Islamic financial institutions and the limited public understanding of key Arabic-based financial terminology. The objective of this study is to analyze the role of Arabic literacy in shaping conceptual understanding and influencing the adoption of Islamic banking services. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis among rural community members. The findings reveal that most participants rely on informal sources of information, such as family and social networks, rather than structured educational channels. Limited familiarity with Arabic terms such as akad, mudharabah, and riba leads to misconceptions, including the belief that Islamic banking is exclusively for Muslims. These misunderstandings contribute to a preference for conventional banking services due to greater accessibility and familiarity. Additionally, minimal educational outreach from Islamic banking institutions further limits public exposure to accurate conceptual explanations. The study concludes that Arabic literacy plays a critical role in shaping financial understanding and behavior. Integrating Arabic language learning into financial literacy programs is essential to improve comprehension and promote inclusive access to Islamic banking services.

Abstract

Inappropriate Arabic teaching methods often hinder students’ ability to comprehend kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts). In the Wustho 2 Class at Madrasah Diniyah Al-Manshur Popongan Klaten, students face difficulties in independently understanding religious texts despite possessing basic grammatical knowledge. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Ibtidai method, along with its supporting and inhibiting factors, in enhancing maharah qira’ah fiqh (reading skills in jurisprudence). The novelty of this research lies in its integrative analysis using E. Mulyasa’s educational taxonomy and Mulyadi’s implementation framework. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and further validated via non-participant observation and documentary analysis, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results indicate that the Ibtidai method effectively facilitates students’ literacy transition by shifting the focus of difficulty from technical-mechanical aspects toward analytical-conceptual skills. The primary constraints identified are the heavy dominance of rote learning and low self-regulated learning among students. Ketidaktepatan metode pembelajaran bahasa Arab sering kali menghambat kemampuan literasi kitab kuning santri. Di Kelas Wustho 2 Madrasah Diniyah Al-Manshur Popongan Klaten, santri mengalami kesulitan memahami teks keagamaan secara mandiri meskipun telah memiliki dasar gramatikal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis implementasi metode Ibtidai serta faktor pendukung dan penghambatnya dalam meningkatkan maharah qira’ah fiqh. Kontribusi kebaruan penelitian ini terletak pada pengkajian integratif menggunakan taksonomi pendidikan E. Mulyasa dan perspektif implementasi Mulyadi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan desain studi kasus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode Ibtidai efektif memfasilitasi masa transisi literasi santri dengan menggeser fokus kesulitan dari aspek teknis-mekanis menuju kemampuan analitis-konseptual. Kendala utama yang ditemukan adalah tingginya dominasi hafalan murni (rote learning) dan rendahnya kemandirian belajar santri (self-regulated learning).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the components and feasibility of the Arabic textbook for the tenth grade of Madrasah Aliyah published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia based on William F. Mackey’s perspective. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a library research design and was analyzed using the content analysis method. The analysis focused on four major aspects proposed by William F. Mackey, namely selection, gradation, presentation, and repetition. The findings revealed that the textbook contains relatively complete language learning components. In terms of selection, the materials were considered relevant to students’ competencies and communicative needs. In terms of gradation, the materials were systematically organized from simple forms to more complex ones. In the aspect of presentation, the textbook applied staging, demonstration, contextual procedures, and pictorial procedures quite well, although differential procedures and ostensive procedures were still limited. Meanwhile, the repetition aspect demonstrated the implementation of rote, incremental, variational, and operational repetition. Based on the findings, the Arabic textbook for the tenth grade can generally be considered appropriate for use as a teaching material at Madrasah Aliyah, as it fulfills most of the textbook feasibility principles proposed by William F. Mackey.هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى تحليل مكونات كتاب اللغة العربية للصف العاشر بالمدرسة الثانوية الإسلامية الصادر عن وزارة الشؤون الدينية في جمهورية إندونيسيا ومدى صلاحيته للاستخدام، وذلك من منظور وليام ف. ماكي. اعتمد البحث على المنهج الوصفي النوعي بتصميم البحث المكتبي، وتمّ تحليل البيانات باستخدام أسلوب تحليل المحتوى. وقد تمحور التحليل حول أربعة محاور رئيسية اقترحها وليام ف. ماكي، وهي: الاختيار، والتدرج، والعرض، والتكرار. وقد كشفت النتائج أن الكتاب المدرسي يحتوي على مكونات تعليمية للغة شبه متكاملة. فمن حيث الاختيار، اعتُبرت المواد ذات صلة بكفاءات الطلاب واحتياجاتهم التواصلية. ومن حيث التدرج، جاءت المواد منظمةً بصورة منهجية من الأشكال البسيطة إلى الأكثر تعقيدًا. أما من حيث العرض، فقد طبّق الكتاب أساليب التدرج المرحلي، والعرض التوضيحي، والإجراءات السياقية، والإجراءات البصرية بشكل جيد، وإن كانت الإجراءات التفاضلية والإجراءات الإيضاحية المباشرة لا تزال محدودة. وفيما يخص التكرار، فقد تجلّى تطبيق أنواعه الأربعة، وهي: التكرار الحفظي، والتكرار التراكمي، والتكرار التنويعي، والتكرار التطبيقي. وبناءً على هذه النتائج، يمكن القول بشكل عام إن كتاب اللغة العربية للصف العاشر مناسب للاستخدام كمادة تعليمية في المدرسة الثانوية الإسلامية، إذ يستوفي معظم مبادئ صلاحية الكتاب المدرسي التي اقترحها وليام ف. ماكي.

Abstract

This study highlights how phonemes and intonation interact in shaping meaning variation in Arabic, emphasizing the integration of segmental and suprasegmental aspects within semantic analysis. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the study examines selected Qur’anic texts containing phonemic and intonational variations that influence meaning. The findings reveal that phonemes significantly distinguish lexical meaning through systematic sound changes, particularly gemination, while intonation directs meaning at the utterance level by transforming interrogative forms into expressions of emphasis, warning, or affirmation. The study also demonstrates that phonemes and intonation function integratively in constructing dynamic and contextual meanings. These findings confirm that meaning variation in Arabic is determined not only by lexical structure but also by the interaction between phonological and intonational elements. Therefore, an integrative semantic approach is essential for achieving a more comprehensive understanding of meaning in Arabic language studies. تسعى هذه الدراسة إلى إبراز التفاعل بين الفونيمات والتنغيم في تشكيل تنوع الدلالة في اللغة العربية، مع التأكيد على أهمية التكامل بين الجوانب المقطعية وفوق المقطعية في إطار التحليل الدلالي. واعتمدت الدراسة المنهجَ الكيفيَّ بالأسلوب الوصفي التحليلي، من خلال تحليل نصوص قرآنية مختارة تتضمن تنوعات فونيمية وتنغيمية تؤثر في المعنى. وأظهرت النتائج أن الفونيمات تؤدي دورًا بارزًا في التمييز بين المعاني المعجمية عبر التغيرات الصوتية المنتظمة، ولا سيما ظاهرة التشديد، في حين يسهم التنغيم في توجيه المعنى على مستوى الخطاب من خلال تحويل الأساليب الاستفهامية إلى دلالات التوكيد أو التحذير أو التقرير. كما كشفت الدراسة أن الفونيمات والتنغيم يعملان في تكامل وظيفي في بناء معانٍ ديناميكية وسياقية. وتؤكد هذه النتائج أن تنوع المعنى في العربية لا يتحدد من خلال البنية المعجمية وحدها، بل يتشكل أيضًا عبر التفاعل بين العناصر الصوتية والتنغيمية. ومن ثَمَّ، تغدو المقاربة الدلالية التكاملية ضرورةً لا غنى عنها لتحقيق فهم أكثر شمولًا للمعنى في الدراسات اللغوية العربية
