Abstract

Putri Kalingga [Princess Kalingga] is one of the literary works that deals with feminist education issues, especially in the Ancient Mataram Era (7th century). The results showed that feminist education had been implemented in the Kingdom of Kalingga (7th century). There were two models of feminist education in the Kalingga Kingdom era, namely private education and education in dormitories (vihara). Private education was given by parents (rishi and mpu) to their daughters, which included various kinds of knowledge, using weapons and self-defense. In the dormitory, women were trained to become nuns, studying religion (Buddhism), law, leadership and trade, as well as self-defense. Abstract

This paper aims to examine the short story Tarom by Budi Darma with theoretical knife of orientalism. The method in this study uses descriptive qualitative. The data collection technique uses the close-reading method, while the analysis technique uses the dialectical method. Edward Said’s Orientalism as a formal object and Budi Darma’s short story Tarom published by Kompas newspaper is a material object. The results of study suggest that, first, there is a polarization of ‘West’ and ‘East’ which is represented by the characters in the short story. The West in this case is depicted Germany and the East shown is Japan. Second, it does not only describe the polarization of the West and the East, but also shows the discourse of resistance. Through the depiction of the Tarom character, this short story shows the existence of a Western body with Easten thoughts. Thus, the short story Tarom displays a narrative of reversal of the Orientalism discourse.

Abstract

Teaching literature equips learners with the knowledge and skills of appreciating literary works. Learners are expected to be able to feel and enjoy the beauty of literary works. Teaching literary appreciation still experiences obstacles due to limited time allocation and teacher skills. Such constraints occur in face-to-face teaching of literature appreciation, and are likely to occur in open and distance learning. It is very interesting to study considering that teachers and students in open and distance learning do not meet face-to-face in the classroom. This article describes the teaching of Indonesian literature appreciation in open and distance education. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected from the subject matter books of PBIN 4213 Poetry, PBIN 4217 Drama, and PBIN 4219 Teaching Literary Appreciation, as well as archives of their teaching implementation at the Universitas Terbuka. The teaching materials from the three subject matter books were analyzed and juxtaposed with the teaching process delivered through asynchronous online tutorials. The results of the analysis show that teaching Indonesian literature appreciation can be implemented in open and distance universities through online tutorials.

Abstract

The purpose this article is to obtain a representation of the idea of Chinese ethnic assimilation as a form of life harmony in the novel Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak (DKBC) based on the author's worldview. This article is qualitative research with descriptive analysis and a literary sociology approach based on Goldmann's genetic structuralism theory, Lotman's semiotics, and Mukařovskŷ backpack's literary aesthetics. In addition to finding the author's worldview, the text of DKBC is also seen as a dynamic aesthetic object. The primary data source is the novel DKBC by Ahmad Tohari; the secondary data source is articles and some reference literature related to diversity and harmonization. The stages of analysis were carried out using the first-level semiotic reading (heuristic) and continued with the second-level semiotic reading (hermeneutic). The results show an effort to build diversity and harmonization through blending, leading to life harmony. The emergence of Mulyani's perspective, which is different from her mother's in the novel DKBC, represents the complex and heterogeneous side of human life. The assimilation of ethnic Chinese is an important message about diversity and heterogeneity in Ahmad Tohari's novels. In such a context, the harmony of life represents ideas that the author voices well.

Abstract

Bali is an island that always attracts tourists with its beauty. This natural beauty makes Bali always succeed as an interesting topic to discuss. Apart from its natural beauty, poetry about Bali is also interesting to research. “Malam Pengantin di Pesisir Serangan” is a poem that explains the condition of Serangan Beach in 1997. This poem, created by Wayan Sunarta, tries to express environmental criticism firmly through the choice of diction. The social criticism in this poem describes two interesting things to study, namely Serangan Beach with its naturalness and Serangan Beach with its modernity. This research uses Riffaterre’s semiotic theory by focusing on the process of interpreting poetry in heuristic and hermeneutic reading. Heuristic reading is the first stage of reading in understanding poetry. At this stage, the poem is read following the rules of the language. After that, hermeneutic reading, namely the process of interpreting poetry using literary conventions.

The dimensions of worship practices in Kandan Nawui Bojah can be seen in the rituals carried out by the Dayak Siang community. They practice worship by sowing rice (bojah tawui). The Experience Dimension in Kandan Bojah Nawui is seen in the experience or perception that padi or rice has long been promised to humans that it will support humans.
