Abstract

The Woman Warrior and China Men by Maxine Hong Kingston portray abject identity. Kingston’s Chinese American family in the novels seek to establish a superior identity over both the Americans, other Chinese people, and even their children who were born in America. This is apparent from the way the family views the white Americans and other Chinese people as ghosts and peasants respectively, hence displaying an ambivalence in regard to identity. By using the framework of feminist narratology and theories of abjection, mimicry, and identity, this article shows how identity as abject is realized through mimicry and displacement in the two novels. This article argues that Kingston’s Chinese American family disrespects while also reinforces the borders of identity. Because of their partial representation of identity, they are permanently displaced. Moreover, while they abject other identities to establish themselves, their own ambivalence makes them the abject that possesses a flexible identity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the application of problem-solving methods to improve the reading literacy skills of persuasive texts in class VIII A students of SMP Negeri 15 Palu. This research is classroom action research using two cycles. Data collection techniques were observation and giving learning outcome tests at the end of each cycle. The data analysis technique was qualitative. The results showed that in cycle I, the aspect of identifying was 71, the aspect of completeness of structure was 73, and the aspect of linguistic rules was 74. From all aspects assessed, classical learning completeness was obtained at 60%, the results of teacher activity observation were 67.39%, and the results of student activity observation were 62.5%. In cycle II, there was a significant increase, especially in identifying which was worth 93, the completeness of the structure was worth 77, and the linguistic rules aspect was worth 82. Classical learning completeness in cycle II reached 92%, teacher activity observation results were 96.73%, and student activity observation results were 97.5%. It shows that applying the problem-solving method can improve the literacy skills of reading persuasive texts in class VIII A students of SMP Negeri 15 Palu.

Abstract

The 2020 US presidential debate was a democratic practice held every four years. In the debate, each debater used turn taking strategies. This research focuses on the uses of turn taking strategies and their types dominantly produced by the debaters in the debate. The strategies encompass taking, holding, and yielding the turn. Elaborating the strategy in depth is the aim of this research. Qualitative conversation analysis technique using turn-by-turn consideration was the used method. The utterances of the debaters were the data. The data source was a self-made transcription based on the video recording of the debate. Overlapping, interruption, repair, and other debater selection often occur in the debate through those strategies. Consequently, TRP frequently cannot be reached, and the usage of these strategies affects turn allocation. The results show that turn taking strategies were applied in the debate. Trump used taking the turn and yielding the turn as strategies. Meanwhile, Biden used holding the turn as his strategy. For future research, discussions on turn-taking subcategories in the scope of political debates and conversation analysis are expected to be conducted more.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the stylistic elements and imagery in the poems of Li Bai and Sudi Yatmana using Northrop Frye's theory, and to understand how these elements convey meaning and nuance in their works. The research employs a stylistic approach with a descriptive-qualitative design. Data were collected from offline sources (books, notes, archives) and online sources (digital), categorized into primary data (poems by Li Bai) and secondary data (books by Sudi Yatmana). The findings indicate that Li Bai's poems, such as 静夜思 Jìngyè sī, 月下独酌 Yuè xià dúzhuó, and 早发帝城 Zǎo fā bái dì chéng, use poetic language rich in personification and metaphor to depict deep feelings towards nature and philosophical contemplation. In contrast, Sudi Yatmana's poems, such as Paman Tani Jawa Purwa, Nandur Pari Jero, and Panen, are more realistic, portraying the everyday lives of farmers with vivid details and a profound appreciation for the human-nature relationship. This analysis demonstrates that Li Bai's works exude romanticism and introspection, while Yatmana's poems highlight the cultural richness and agricultural life of rural Java.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of masculinity in the male main character depicted in Eldar Ryazanov's film Вокзал Для Двоих (Railway Station for Two), which was released in 1982. This study aims to describe and interpret the portrait of masculine characteristics shown in Platon Sergeyevich Ryabinin as the leading male character in this film. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach in the form of the descriptive analytical method. The theory used to examine representations in film scenes and dialogues is Stuart Hall's representation theory and supported by Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This research shows that through both parts of the film Вокзал Для Двоих (Railway Station for Two) (1982), Platon Sergeyevich Ryabinin as the male lead character exhibits masculine characteristics based on seven characteristics expressed by Janet Saltzman Chafetz, namely physical appearance, functional, sexual, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, and other personal characteristics of the character.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the religious value in the novel Suluh Rindu by Habiburrahman El Shirazy and its implementation as literature learning material in high school. This type of research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The research data is in the form of quotations of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences containing religious value in the novel Suluh Rindu by Habiburrahman El Shirazy. This study's data source is the novel Suluh Rindu by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, designed with literary content analysis. Data collection techniques are reading, listening, taking notes, and documenting, and data validity using data triangulation. Data analysis techniques use dialectical methods. The results of this study show that the novel Suluh Rindu contains three religious values: creed, worship, and morals. The religious value of this novel can be implemented as literature learning material in high school based on reading and viewing elements with learning outcomes in the form of students being able to express ideas and views based on logical thinking principles from reading various types of texts (non-fiction and fiction) in print and electronic media. Students can appreciate fiction and non-fiction texts.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the connotation and denotation meanings in the song entitled Saat Kau Telah Mengerti (When You Understand) by Virgoun. In this article, the method used descriptive qualitative and analyses using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which discusses the concepts of denotation and connotation. According to Barthes' concept, a denotative sign consists of a signifier and a signified, but it also functions as a connotative sign. This means that the connotative sign not only has an additional meaning, but also consists of both parts of the denotative sign on which it is based. The results of this study reveal that there are ten song lyrics that contain denotative meaning and sixteen song lyrics that contain connotative meaning. The song Saat Kau Telah Mengerti has a meaning in the form of messages and hopes of parents to children. In its song, the songwriter as a parent wants to give the best for his child. However, action taken by parents for their children’s benefit can occasionally cause the child to feel upset or angry.

Abstract

Poetry is a literary work that is intrinsically linked to the use of metaphor. This study examines the conceptual metaphors found in Indonesian poetry by Chairil Anwar and Korean poetry by Seo Jeong-Ju. Specifically, the research aims to identify the forms of conceptual metaphors present in the poetry of these two poets, using a contrastive analysis approach based on Johnson and Lakoff's theory of conceptual metaphor. The method employed is a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing note-taking data collection techniques. The data consists of 10 poems by Chairil Anwar and 10 poems by Seo Jeong-Ju (서정주). The findings reveal similarities in the use of conceptual metaphors, with both poets predominantly employing structural metaphors and using orientational metaphors the least. However, there are quantitative differences; Chairil Anwar's poetry contains a greater number of metaphors compared to that of Seo Jeong-Ju. Therefore, this research not only provides insight into the use of metaphors in Korean and Indonesian poetry but also serves as a valuable reference for further literary research, particularly in the study of poetry and metaphor.

Abstract

Indonesian is part of the Austronesian language family and has a unique script system known as Lontara. Although Indonesian is more dominant, the Bugis language still plays an important role in maintaining the cultural identity and traditions of the Bugis people. This study was conducted to find differences in Bugis speech between students from Southeast Sulawesi in Yogyakarta and their home regions. The object of this research is 22 Southeast Sulawesi students who live in a student dormitory in Yogyakarta. A qualitative-descriptive approach based on Lev Vygotsky's theory was used in this study. The results show that dialectal variations, different ethnic backgrounds, historical and cultural factors, the use of Arabic letters in Bugis writing, the level of formality of use, and the development of Bugis language literature cause the differences in language speech. The findings highlight the importance of Bugis language preservation by Sulawesi students and the strengthening of the community's cultural identity, provide a new contribution to the development of literature on Bugis language development, especially in the Yogyakarta area, and provide new insights into efforts to preserve Indonesian culture.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the syntax of the learning model based on learning activities in the textbook published by Erlangga entitled Mardika Basa lan Sastra Jawa SMP/MTs Kelas VIII. Descriptive qualitative was chosen as the method applied in this research with data sources from the textbook Mardika Basa lan Sastra Jawa SMP/MTs Kelas VIII. The type of instrument used is data card. The data was obtained by document review technique which was read repeatedly and then analyzed through content analysis. Data analysis was done by collecting data, reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the textbook Mardika Basa lan Sastra Jawa SMP/MTs Kelas VIII contains seven chapters of learning materials. There are five chapters (chapters 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7) that apply the Project Based Learning model. Based on these five chapters, it was found that the learning activities did not reflect syntax 3 (developing a schedule) and syntax 4 (monitoring students). In addition, the textbook contains some variations of learning activities that reflect the syntax of Project Based Learning.
