Abstract

This research aims to reveal the tradition of “melengengan” in the context of Gayo ethnic weddings in Central Aceh. The method used in this research is qualitative with a descriptive approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation and literature study. The findings of this research describe the process of implementing the “melengengan” tradition in Gayo ethnic wedding ceremonies, as well as identifying the meaning and important role of this tradition in Gayo ethnic culture and society. The role of the “melengengan” tradition in Gayo tribal culture is very important because it is one of the main pillars in maintaining and preserving their culture. In the midst of globalization and modernization, preserving this tradition is crucial in maintaining the identity and values of the Gayo tribe. The tradition of bowing is not only a symbol of marriage, but also a symbol of togetherness, honor, and solidarity among the Gayo ethnic community.

Abstract

Bali is an island that always attracts tourists with its beauty. This natural beauty makes Bali always succeed as an interesting topic to discuss. Apart from its natural beauty, poetry about Bali is also interesting to research. “Malam Pengantin di Pesisir Serangan” is a poem that explains the condition of Serangan Beach in 1997. This poem, created by Wayan Sunarta, tries to express environmental criticism firmly through the choice of diction. The social criticism in this poem describes two interesting things to study, namely Serangan Beach with its naturalness and Serangan Beach with its modernity. This research uses Riffaterre’s semiotic theory by focusing on the process of interpreting poetry in heuristic and hermeneutic reading. Heuristic reading is the first stage of reading in understanding poetry. At this stage, the poem is read following the rules of the language. After that, hermeneutic reading, namely the process of interpreting poetry using literary conventions.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the dimensions of religiosity contained in Kandan Nawui Bojah. These dimensions of religiosity include (1) the ideology/belief dimension, (2) the practice dimension of worship, (3) the experience dimension, (4) the dimension of religious knowledge, and (5) the consequence dimension contained. In Kandan Nawui Bojah/Beas, there is an ideological dimension in the form of a view that acknowledges the truth that through the sown rice, they can communicate and convey messages to their sangiang or ancestors. The dimensions of worship practices in Kandan Nawui Bojah can be seen in the rituals carried out by the Dayak Siang community. They practice worship by sowing rice (bojah tawui). The Experience Dimension in Kandan Bojah Nawui is seen in the experience or perception that padi or rice has long been promised to humans that it will support humans. The dimension of religious knowledge in Kandan can be seen in knowledge about the ritual of nawui bojah or sowing rice. Community religious knowledge regarding the ritual of nawui bojah, or sowing rice, is absolute and must be believed by Kaharingan followers. The consequence dimension contained in Nawui Bojah's kandan explains the consequences that occur if someone wastes rice.

Abstract

The existence of various traditional expressions from different regions in Bangka Belitung encourages this research to find out how these traditional expressions are formed, especially in the northern region of Bangka. This study examines the use of a natural concept in Bangka traditional expressions using cognitive semantic analysis, namely Kövecses' conceptualization metaphor. Data were obtained from a book of Bangka traditional expressions written by Khaliffitriansyah, Karyani, and Prayoga (2016). This research uses metaphor conceptualization as a theory, so it only uses metaphorical data. Based on the findings, 20 data containing metaphorical forms were found to be classified based on the conceptualization. Bangka traditional expressions contain metaphors formed in the concept of nature as the most used concept, including using plants, animals, and not man-made entities such as stars, stones, and water.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of the environment in the learning and preservation of the Serawai language, also known as ecolinguistics. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method is used in this research to describe the result of the interview and observation of the Serawai language. The subject of this research is a group of Serawai speakers who live in Bogor. The instrument of this research is the interview. Data analysis was conducted through five stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data grouping, data analysis, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the user community still uses the Serawai language, but it is expected to experience a shift or even extinction. It is caused by the decreasing use of the Serawai language and the lack of Serawai language learning for children. Environmental factors also play an important role in the formation of Serawai language conversation, but the influence is limited. Children who live in a Serawai language environment tend to become bilingual or even multilingual because the learning environment is also multilingual. In addition, parents are also less serious about teaching the Serawai language; some even switch to other languages.

Abstract

Women empowerment is a form of women's resistance to the domination of power and gender-based violence. This research aims to reveal the construction of women empowerment in the film Memoria (2016) by Kamila Andini through analysis of the film's narrative structure and cinematographic elements. The identification of the film's narrative structure uses Gérard Genette's narratology theory through the concept of focalization and the identification of cinematographic aspects using Metz semiotics. The method used in the research is the descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques were carried out by reviewing film sequences, literature studies, and identifying cinematographic aspects. The results show that Maria's focalization dominates the story, moves the story, and there are six grand syntagmas, namely descriptive syntagma, parallel syntagma, bracket syntagma, scene, episodic sequence, and insert subjective. Analyzing the narrative structure and the cinematographic aspects of the film through a series of syntagms, both represent the construction of women empowerment continuously. Maria is a woman who survives various life challenges and can heal the trauma within herself. The healing process starts from within oneself (self-healing) and then sharing stories (sharing) with family or trusted people. These things are steps toward freedom, justice, and women empowerment.

Abstract

This research analyzes two short stories created by Flannery O’Connor entitled “The Barber” and “The Artificial Nigger” which depict the ideology of white superiority by scrutinizing the context of the stories and discussing the homology between the texts and the contexts. Data were analyzed using qualitative methods, and the theory used was genetic structuralism by Lucien Goldmann. Primary data concerning white superiority were taken from both short stories. Secondary data about socio-cultural and historical facts of white superiority in America in the 1940s -1950s were taken from journal articles and books. The research results show similarities between literary works and socio-historical conditions in the year when the literary works were written. The author’s worldview shows that she wants to represent the ideology of white superiority that has oppressed the black race. Through these short stories, the author wants to illustrate how cruel and difficult it is to fight the ideology of white superiority.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research employed the methods of observation and auto-expert judgment for the data collection and applied Brown & Levinson’s politeness theory (1987) and Molina & Albir’s translation theory (2002) for the data analysis. This research focused on finding the positive politeness strategies and the translation techniques of the utterances obtained from Pay It Forward movie as the data source. Based on the findings of the research, there were 40 utterances with positive politeness strategies as the data under analysis. The research findings, among others, showed that the strategies of Intensify interest to hearer (17.50%) and Exaggerate (17.50%) were dominantly used in the Pay It Forward movie, while the translation strategy of Established equivalent (40.00%) was mostly used in the translation of positive politeness utterances in the movie. It can be concluded here that the translator translates the positive politeness utterances of the source language (English) into the target language (Indonesian) appropriately through the Established equivalent strategy without making any significant changes to maintain the meaning relatively the same in the Indonesian translation subtitles.
