Abstract

Muhammadiyah’s Water Jurisprudence provides a faith-based framework for sustainable and equitable water governance. This study examines its normative foundations through the lens of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah and its relevance to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). Using a qualitative normative approach based on document analysis, the study finds that it integrates the objectives of ḥifẓ al-nafs, ḥifẓ al-māl, ḥifẓ al-nasl, and ḥifẓ al-bī’ah, which closely align with the targets of SDG 6, including safe water access, water quality improvement, efficient water use, and ecosystem protection. The study concludes that Muhammadiyah’s Water Jurisprudence provides a strategic Islamic framework for advancing sustainable water governance.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the integration of the Prophet's Sunnah with latest obstetric science through the lens of Maqāṣid al-Sharī'ah (the objectives of Islamic law). Using a qualitative approach with thematic analysis of hadith literature, medical evidence, and Islamic legal philosophy, the research reveals that the Prophet's teachings regarding maternal care from pregnancy (al-haml) through the Aqiqa ceremony (tahnik) embody fundamental principles of preserving life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), protecting lineage (ḥifẓ al-nasl), and promoting human dignity and intellect (ḥifẓ al-'aql). Modern obstetric practices—including prenatal monitoring, nutritional support, safe delivery protocols, and postnatal care—align remarkably well with these Prophetic teachings, demonstrating that Islamic principles and contemporary medical science are not merely compatible but genuinely complementary. The study concludes that integrating Sunnah-based guidance with evidence-based obstetric care provides a truly holistic approach that honors both the spiritual and physical dimensions of maternal and fetal well-being. Abstract

This article examines the role of Bayt al-Hikmah in shaping the Islamic intellectual revolution during the Abbasid era through the transfer, adaptation, and transformation of knowledge derived from the Greek, Persian, and Indian traditions. The study aims to explain the mechanisms of the translation movement, the integration of philosophical rationality with the Islamic sciences, and the emergence of Al-Kindī, Al-Khwārizmī, and Al-Farabi as indicators of successful epistemic transformation. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research and historical-critical analysis. The data were drawn from books, journal articles, academic encyclopedias, and historiographical studies addressing the Abbasid dynasty, Bayt al-Hikmah, the translation movement, Islamic philosophy, and the history of science. The data were analyzed through source selection, external and internal criticism, thematic categorization, historical interpretation, and argumentative synthesis. The findings demonstrate that Bayt al-Hikmah functioned not merely as a library or translation center, but as an institutional nexus connecting state patronage, multilingual translators, and interreligious scholarly communities. Knowledge transfer occurred through the stages of adoption, terminological adaptation, methodological internalization, and innovation. The integration of logic and philosophy strengthened Islamic theology, uṣūl al-fiqh, Qur’anic exegesis, and other scholarly traditions without diminishing the authority of revelation. The emergence of Abbasid scholars further demonstrates that foreign knowledge was transformed into new theories, methods, and technologies. The article concludes that Abbasid intellectual flourishing rested on epistemic openness, institutional support, a strong culture of literacy, and the critical capacity to engage with knowledge across civilizations.

Abstract

This study examines how time is perceived and negotiated within pesantren culture, focusing on the routine lateness of the kiai in activities he leads compared to the strict time discipline enforced upon santri, at Pondok Pesantren Bahrul Ulum Al-Hamid, Gondanglegi. Using an ethnographic-phenomenological design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with nine santri, three ustadz/ustadzah, and one kiai. Analysis combined the emic framework of adab thalabul ilmi with the etic lens of hidden transcript theory. Findings show that the kiai's lateness is normalized through in-group language and productive waiting practices, sustained by a stark asymmetry in sanctions between santri and kiai, and produces differentiated voice among santri: some accept the culture as a path to barakah, while others express discontent only in guarded, off-stage talk rather than openly. Tenure alone does not predict this stance; individual disposition matters as much as length of stay. Pengurus and junior ustadz act as buffering actors absorbing tension between kiai and santri. The novelty of this study lies in showing that the durability of the 'jam karet kiai' culture rests less on the absence of grievance than on layered mechanisms -- linguistic, theological, and structural -- that keep grievance from surfacing, contributing to the study of informal power relations in religious institutions.

Abstract

Deep learning has become a key paradigm in twenty-first-century education because it promotes conceptual understanding, knowledge integration, and reflective thinking rather than superficial learning. However, studies linking the educational values of Q.S. Al-Alaq verses 1–5, particularly the command of iqra', with the deep learning framework remain limited. This study aims to (1) identify the educational values in Q.S. Al-Alaq verses 1–5, (2) explain deep learning from the perspective of Islamic education, and (3) formulate an integrative conceptual model. Using a qualitative conceptual design with library research, the study analyzes the Qur'an, authoritative tafsir (Ibn Kathir, Al-Azhar, and Al-Mishbah), and recent scholarly articles. Data were analyzed through documentation, reduction, categorization, and conceptual synthesis based on the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, with source and theoretical triangulation ensuring credibility. The findings identify six educational values aligned with deep learning and propose a tawhid-centered pedagogical model integrating faith, knowledge, and practice through tadabbur and tafakkur.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has fundamentally transformed the production, organization, and dissemination of knowledge, including within the field of Islamic studies. While AI significantly enhances access to Islamic sources and accelerates legal research, its increasing role in generating legal arguments raises fundamental epistemological questions concerning its position within the methodology of uṣūl al-fiqh. This study aims to reconstruct the epistemology of uṣūl al-fiqh in the era of Artificial Intelligence by examining the epistemological status of AI in the process of istinbāṭ (Islamic legal reasoning). Employing a qualitative library research approach combined with conceptual analysis, this study critically examines classical and contemporary literature on uṣūl al-fiqh, Islamic legal theory, and Artificial Intelligence. The findings demonstrate that AI does not alter the normative foundations of Islamic law but transforms the ecosystem through which Islamic legal knowledge is produced and managed. Although AI possesses remarkable capabilities in literature retrieval, comparative analysis, argument mapping, and large-scale information processing, it lacks the normative reasoning, ethical consciousness, methodological competence, and moral accountability required for ijtihād. Consequently, AI cannot function as a source of law or as a mujtahid. The study proposes a Methodological Integration Model of Uṣūl al-Fiqh and Artificial Intelligence, positioning AI as an epistemic and methodological instrument that supports legal research while preserving human scholars as the sole holders of epistemological authority in Islamic legal reasoning. This model constitutes the principal novelty of the research by shifting the discussion from the legality or ethics of AI toward its epistemological integration within uṣūl al-fiqh, thereby providing a conceptual framework for developing Islamic legal studies that remains methodologically authentic while embracing technological innovation.

Abstract

The increasingly competitive labor market requires university students to develop entrepreneurial motivation that is grounded not only in economic objectives but also in moral and spiritual values. This study aims to analyze the entrepreneurial motivation of students at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (FAI UMJ), from the perspective of Islamic education and to examine the role of Islamic values-based entrepreneurship education in shaping students' entrepreneurial character. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving FAI UMJ students and were analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that students' entrepreneurial motivation is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, as well as the internalization of Islamic educational values. Principles such as honesty (ṣidq), trustworthiness (amanah), responsibility, hard work, discipline, and perseverance (ikhtiar) serve as the primary foundations for developing entrepreneurship oriented not only toward economic gain but also toward social benefit and divine blessing. Entrepreneurship education at FAI UMJ contributes positively to strengthening students' entrepreneurial knowledge, skills, and motivation through the integration of Islamic business ethics into the learning process. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of psychological, social, and religious dimensions within the framework of Islamic education, demonstrating that the internalization of Islamic values strengthens the character of ethical and socially responsible Muslim entrepreneurs. The study recommends strengthening Islamic values-based entrepreneurship curricula through practical training, business incubators, and sustainable entrepreneurial mentoring programs.

Abstract

The pursuit of gender justice within Islamic family law, particularly concerning divorce regulations, remains a pressing legal and social concern in Indonesia. Empirical realities reveal that women often face normative and procedural inequalities in accessing divorce rights. This research undertakes a comparative analysis of the divorce law regimes in Indonesia and Turkiye to assess the degree of legal protection afforded to women undergoing marital dissolution. In the Indonesian context, legal norms continue to privilege the husband's unilateral right to ṭalāq, whereas wives are required to undergo a lengthier and more complex judicial process to dissolve a marriage. Conversely, Turkiye’s secular civil law system is grounded in the principle of formal equality between spouses, ensuring that both parties possess identical legal standing in initiating divorce claims. The judiciary exclusively holds the authority to validate the termination of marriage, and the legal framework provides for spousal maintenance, particularly in favor of the economically vulnerable party. This comparative study underscores the necessity for Indonesia to undertake substantive and procedural reforms aimed at aligning its divorce law more closely with gender-equitable legal standards.
