Abstract

Across the world, evidence is emerging that sexual deviations are common across so many societies. The study investigated necrophilia as a concealed but not an uncommon sexual deviation; contributing factors and the way forward among selected mortuary workers. This qualitative study used interpretive phenomenological design. Data were collected from ten (10) mortuary workers who both worked at privately and government/publicly owned morgues in Kwara-State, Nigeria. Participants were judgmentally selected for the purpose of this study by revealing their lived experiences. A semi-structured interview was used as a data collection method. Data analysis was done through content analysis technique. This study showed mental stress, substance use, avoidance of responsibilities and ritualism were the chief contributory factors to necrophilia. Among other recommendations, constant programmes that will cater for the mental health of mortuary workers should be enforced.

Abstract

In the evolving landscape of Society 5.0, the imperative for students to think critically has become paramount. The acquisition of high order thinking skills (HOTS) plays a pivotal role in nurturing students to become independent, creative thinkers. These skills, encompassing analysis, evaluation, and the generation of innovative ideas, are essential for adapting to the dynamic demands of the modern era. However, the transition to HOTS-based learning poses challenges for students accustomed to conventional teaching methods. This study, conducted among 265 selected students from SMP Negeri 30 Padang using a stratified random sampling technique, employed a questionnaire for data collection. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that 77% of students exhibited HOTS in performing tasks, 77% in answering exams, and 76% in actively engaging with the learning process. Moreover, gender disparities were observed in HOTS-based learning, with 74% of male students demonstrating proficiency compared to 79% of female students. The findings underscore the necessity for educational institutions to address the readiness of students for HOTS-based learning methodologies. Recognizing the gender-based variations in HOTS proficiency, schools are urged to implement targeted strategies to enhance students' critical thinking skills, ensuring optimal outcomes in the learning process. This research contributes valuable insights into the ongoing efforts required to cultivate HOTS-based learning environments in secondary education.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the strategies that would be effective for developing Afrocentric career coaching programmes for neurodiverse college students. As part of the qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted. The participants of this study were six Counselling Psychology lecturers and six Special Needs Education lecturers who specialize in career coaching and development, located in Nigerian universities. The were selected using purposive sampling. To ensure validity and reliability, a semi-structured interview guide was developed and pilot-tested with a subset of participants. The guide included open-ended questions to explore participants' experiences, insights, and recommendations for developing Afrocentric career coaching programmes for neurodiverse college students. The data collection procedure consisted of structured individual interview sessions with each participating lecturer. In addition to the individual interviews, focus group discussions were conducted with a group of eight participants. These discussions provided an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and ideas collectively. The interviews and focus group discussions were also audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim for analysis. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the collected data. The transcripts were read and reread to identify recurring themes, patterns, and insights related to the development of Afrocentric career coaching programmes for neurodiverse college students. The findings of this study indicate that there are several strategies that can be considered when designing Afrocentric career coaching programmes for neurodiverse college students. These strategies include cultural sensitivity, representation, individualized approach, collaborative partnerships, skills development, and career exploration. The findings suggest that incorporating Afrocentric values and perspectives into career coaching can greatly enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of such programmes. The findings of this study provide useful insights into the development of effective Afrocentric career coaching programmes for neurodiverse college students. The major contribution of this study is the development of Afrocentric framework for career coaching.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the increasing number of working women in West Sumatra, which reached 68.50-74.36% in 2022. The dual role as wife and parent can cause work-family conflict. Social support is a factor that affects work-family conflict. This study analyzes the relationship between social support and work-family conflict in career women. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The participants in this study were 60 career women as professionals in West Sumatra. The research instruments used were social support scale and work-family conflict scale. The research data were collected online and then analyzed using partial-least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. The results of this study indicate that there is no significant relationship between the two variables, namely social support and work family conflict. In addition, the simultaneous effect analysis shows that only 16.1% of the variance can be explained, while 83.9% of the causal factors remain unknown. Based on the results of the study, with the help of counselors, career women are expected to understand, overcome problems, and develop skills through various counseling services, such as information services, group guidance and counseling, and family counseling.

Abstract

Early childhood educators are particularly confronted with a high level of stress due to the diverse learning needs and peculiarities of children from birth to five years of age. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore the causes of stress and associated coping strategies among early childhood educators in Nigeria using structural equation modelling. The authors adopted an ex-post-facto research design involving 400 Early Childhood Educators who participated in the study. Two instruments, titled Early Childhood Educators’ Work-Related Stress Questionnaire (ECEWRSQ), and Questionnaire on Cause of Stress and Coping Strategies Among Early Childhood Educators  (QCSCSAECE), were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS computer-based statistical software. Results showed that the hypothesized causal model that describes early childhood educators’ stress, causes, and associated coping strategies was significantly supported by the empirical data. It was also revealed that direct action technique, problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies have significant (p < 0.05) direct effects on the causes of stress among early childhood educators. The implication of this finding is that early childhood educators need to adopt such strategies in order to deal with some of the causes of stress among them. Hence, it was recommended that early childhood educators should employ direct action techniques, and problem-focused as well as emotion-focused coping strategies in order to overcome their work-related stress.
