Abstract

Health practitioners received great attention during the COVID-19 pandemic due to their pivotal role in treating the affected individuals. However, lack of attention was given to supporting workers in the hospital such as cleaning staffs. The study aims toinvestigate whether spousal support was associated with resilience on cleaning staffs working in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.The study participants comprised 103 cleaning staffswho work in several hospitals in the Central Java province. In order to collect the data, we used the Spousal Support Scale, the Resilience Scale, and socio demographic questionnaire that were delivered usingan online platform. Then we analyzed data using SPPS 25.0. This research used the Pearson correlation test and revealed a moderate positive correlation between spousal support and resilience (r = .411,p < .001). In addition, spousal support explains 16.9% of resilience. The majority of study participants received great support from their spouses and reported moderate resilience. Family support, particularly from the partner, play important role in supporting participants work during the pandemic. Future studies may investigate other factors associated with resilience on cleaning staffs or other supporting healthcare workers who work in the hospitalduring the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the education system, leading to school closures and switching toonline learning with very short notice. In order to support the effectiveness of online learning, it is necessary todevelop teachers’ competence in the utilization and use of online media. The study aimed to investigate educators’teaching experience during online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The three teachers who participated inthis study were recruited from the Gubeng 1 Public Elementary School in Surabaya. Interview transcripts wereanalyzed qualitatively by using an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. Data analysis raises threemain themes: 1) an overview of online learning implementation in elementary schools, 2) challenges in the teachercompetence development process, 3) support for teacher competence development. The results of this studyindicate the importance of developing teacher digital competence to increase the effectiveness of online learning.Support from related parties is also needed to encourage the success of online learning.

Abstract

This study specifically aims to see the profile of attachment style and emotional intelligence (EI) as part of personality and the correlation between them, specifically in individuals who have Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). By applying quantitative methods and purposive sampling techniques, this study implemented the ACE questionnaire to select participants who had ACE scores in the range 1-10 as the main characteristics of the sample from the men and women adult population. By using the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) and BarOn EQ-i, this study assessed the five domains of attachment style and the total, 5 composite scales, and 15 subscales of EI from 230 men and 250 women with an age range of 19-45 years. The Pearson correlational analysis results show that the Five Domains of Attachment scales are associated with the level of Total EI (r = -.121 - .576) and Composite EI scales in individuals who have ACE (r = -.17 - .74), except Confidence with Interpersonal and Stress Management, and Discomfort with Intrapersonal and Adaptability. These results are in line with the previous findings regarding the impact of childhood trauma on the personality of individuals in adulthood. Further research on physical and mental disorders related to childhood trauma, attachment style, and EI can be recommended to complement the results.

Abstract

Scale adaptation in different cultures is needed to ensure that the scale measures the intended target. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) has been adopted in several countries, but no Indonesian language adaptation has been made so far. This study aims to test the construct validity of the Indonesian MSPSS that measures one’s level of social support. Rasch analysis was used to examine the psychometric properties of the scale. The subject in this study was 495 Indonesian marine cadets with an average age of 19.32 (41% Engineering, 52.7% Nautical, and 5.5% Electro). In terms of gender, 94.3% were male and 5.7% female. Findings from the Rasch analysis support the one-dimensionality of the 12-items MSPSS in measuring marine cadets’ level of social support. This finding differs from similar MSPSS studies that show the scale’s structure to be multidimensional. The 12-items MSPSS showed excellent internal consistency (person-item interaction index = .85) and fulfilled all the Rasch model requirements. No item misfit was detected from the MNSQ score (.5 < MNSQ < 1.5). Also, there was no item bias based on gender was detected from the scale (.0949 - .9687) > .05. Future studies are advised to test the scale with different samples to further confirm this study’s findings.

Abstract

Several studies have shown that perspective taking may increase perceived similarity between two people via increased self-other overlap. However, there are reasons to doubt the efficacy of perspective taking, particularly due to the difficulty in leaving one’s own perspective to view the world from another’s. In two experiments, we tested the efficacy of perspective taking on increasing perceived similarity and, failing that, proposed a different method that may be more effective in increasing perceived similarity. The first study focused on perspective taking and was done with 95 participants (74% women) with a between-subjects design. The second study examined the effect of imagined contact with 59 participants (76% women) with a within-subjects design. The first experiment showed that perspective taking does not significantly affect perceived similarity, t(94) = -.10, p = .92, while imagined contact increases perceived similarity, t(58) = -2.54, p < .05. These experiments show that perspective taking does not improve perceived similarity, whereas imagined contact does increase perceived similarity. Practical implications are also discussed.

Abstract

University students might experience emotional problems leading to self-injury during the COVID-19 pandemic due to negative relationships with their parents at home. However, strength-based parenting (SBP) can be a protective factor for self-injury. Previous studies showed that SBP had a positive correlation with self-compassion, but no study investigated the effect of SBP and self-compassion on the urge to self-injure. This present study aimed to examine if self-compassion mediated the relationship between SBP and the urge to self-injure. Participants were 193 university students in Surabaya aged 18-21 years old (M = 19.92; SD = 1.21), 86.5% was female. They were recruited voluntarily and asked to complete a series of questionnaire online, consisting of the Strength-Based Parenting Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, and the Alexian Brothers Urge to Self-Injure Scale. Mediation analysis was performed using PROCESS Macro for SPSS. Result showed that SBP was not directly related to the urge to self-injure, t(190) = 0.84, p = .40 (ns), but self-compassion mediated the relationship, ab = -0.93 [-1.30, -0.57]. SBP positively influenced self-compassion, a = 0.17, t(191) = 5.70, p < .001, and self-compassion negatively influenced the urge to self-injure, b = -5.49, t(192) = -8.74, p < .001. Further exploration revealed that self-judgment and over-identification influenced the urge to self-injure, t(186) = -3.35, p < .01 and t(186) = -1.98, p < .05, respectively. Therefore, self-compassion trainings and activities to reduce self-criticism and to identify negative thoughts or feelings might play an important role in preventing and overcoming the urge to self-injure in university students.

Abstract

The department of counseling services at Kerobokan Prison, Bali, Indonesia reported to the researcher of this study that some of their inmates experienced psychological complaints which were impacting their physical health. The researcher conducted this study with the aim of providing a means of relief for the inmates, as well as to examine the impact of a Psycho-Spiritual Integrative Therapy (PSIT) as an intervention. A qualitative research method was used with a multiple case study approach with a thematic analysis to determine the influence of the intervention on the participants’ sense of life aspiration and psychological well-being. Fifteen male prisoners, who were serving 10 or more years for drug related offenses, completed the PSIT and participated in a post interview. The researcher found 5 main themes related to the participants’ experiences over the course of the intervention, which were regret, forgiveness, acceptance, belief, and affirmation. The participant reports indicate the beginning of a transformative change in perspective which may be beneficial for creating a new life for themselves upon their release from prison. Further research is necessary to assess long-term changes in the participants’ perspectives, and how they have integrated their awareness for their return to society. The findings of this research may be included into a residential health services module for the counseling services department at Kerobokan Prison, as well they may be influential in further public health research

Abstract

Sales promoters have an essential role in achieving the company’s profit. Therefore, they are required to have a good performance. However, they often encounter various difficulties during their job performance that decrease employee performance. In overcoming this issue, grit exists in each individual, and social support from the sales promoter’s environment can help them increase their job performance. This research objective is to examine the influence of grit and social support on the job performance of sales promoters. The sampling technique used is simple random sampling. The sample of this research is a group of 180 sales promoters consisting of 132 men and 48 women with an age range of 20-40 years (M = 2.54; SD = 1.027). The instruments used in this study were the Job Performance Scale (24 items, α = .856), Grit Scale (20 items, α = .604), and Social Support Scale (30 items, α = .877). The analysis test by the multiple linear regression with the hypothesis testing t-test statistic showed a positive and statistically significant influence of grit and social support on the sales promoter job performance, adjusted R 2 = .608; F(2, 177) = 140.057, p < .001.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacts on life, especially for parents of school-age children. One of the phenomena that occur is parenting stress, which impacts parenting. Parenting stress requires the role of mindfulness and family resilience in order to be able to deal with stressful conditions of parenting during a pandemic. This study aimed to determine the relationship between mindfulness, family resilience, and parenting stress of parents who had school-age children. This quantitative study used a purposive sampling technique involving 60 parents with children of primary school age (93.3% female, Mage = 38; SD = 7.4). The instruments used in this research were the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) with (α = .911), Family Resilience Assessment Scale (α = .964), and The Parenting Stress Index (α = .994). The method of data analysis was multiple linear regression analysis. The result shows that mindfulness and family resilience are simultaneously statistically significant in predicting parenting stress, Adj R 2 = .936, F(2, 58) = 428.89, p < .001. In addition, it found that mindfulness does not contribute to the model, b = -.025; t(58) = -.686, p = .495, while family resilience does, b = .957; t(58) = 26.158, p < .001. The effective contribution of mindfulness and family resilience to parenting stress is 93.6%. Based on the research results obtained, parents can develop mindfulness and family resilience to cope with the perceived stress of parenting.
