Abstract

Families with members charged for terrorism face immense challenges. This study aims to understand family hardiness and family perspective of families who have family members as terrorists convict. Using a phenomenological approach, we explore family perspectives and family hardiness in three informants (father,mother, older sister of a terror convict). The results of this study reveal that family develops family hardiness through the stages of shock and early adaptation, surrender and believe in God during the hard times, confidence in dealing with difficult circumstances, identifying challenges and formulating constructive attitudes, and working together as a unit to control difficult situations. We also found how one family and its internal communication can possibly become the fuel to form a positive perspective, and to strengthen the belief to move forward. These results imply family hardiness is formed as a whole by the process of how a family accepts the effects of difficult situations and works together as a unit to overcome it. We call for more attention to strengthening support for families, at both social and policy levels, because these actions and initiatives can help families with difficult situations, e.g. a family who has a member as a terrorist convict to cope and adapt successfully, preventing them from experiencing severe psychological burdens and depression as they possibly received stigma and social exclusion.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of emotional experience writing (EXPRIT) model in enhancing the problem-solving skills among adolescents with social-emotional problems in orphanages. The EXPRIT model is an intervention based on cognitive psychotherapy that can train adolescents’ socio-emotional problem-solving skills. The prevalence study found that 26.9% had behavioral disorders and 10.2% of emotional disorders of orphans were found in the 10-14 years old age group. Initial interviews conducted for this study indicated that children in the orphanage experienced problems such as difficulties in adapting at their environment in the orphanage and some emotional behavior problems. A total 15 participants from various orphanages were included in a one-group pre-test and post-test experimental design research. Problem-solving skills were assessed using an adapted “Teen Wellness Self-Assessment” scale. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, and the data were analyzed using the paired sample t-test. The findings demonstrate a significant positive impact of the EXPRIT intervention on enhancing problem-solving skills in orphaned adolescent, t(14) = 4.503, p = .000; Cohen’s d = 1.163, suggesting substantial practical significance with potential implications for addressing socioemotional challenges in this population. Despite its promising results, this current study was limited byits small sample size. These findings highlightthe importance of targeted interventions in addressing the needs of orphaned youth dealing with socio-emotional problems

Abstract

This current study aims to investigate the negative relationship between husband’s support, adversity quotient,and anxiety of third-trimester primigravida pregnant mothers. A quantitative method with a cross-sectional study design was employed. A total of 103 primigravida third-trimester mothers (Mean age = 27.02) who received prenatal care at the Sidoarjo health center was participated in this study. Data were collected using the Husband’s Support Scale (51 items, α = .96), the Adversity Quotient Scale (39 items, α = .93), and the Anxiety Scale of the Pregnant Mother (49 items, α = .92). Data analysis was conducted using the Multiple Linear Regression analysis with the assistance of SPSS version 24 for Windows. The results indicate negative relationships between husband’s support (r =-.581, p <.001) and adversity quotient (r = -.612, p <.001) with anxiety. The husband’s support and adversity quotient are together explaining 37.9% variances of anxiety in primigravida third-trimester mothers (Adj. R2 = .379; F(32, 100) = 32.07, p < .001). This research implies the importance of husband support for pregnant mothers and the need for mothers to develop adequate adversity quotient to manage pregnancy related anxiety.

Abstract

Previous research has supported strategies of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and Reciprocal TeachingStrategy (RTS) to enhance reading comprehension performance in different populations but no study has beenfound to examine the effectiveness of both strategies of reading among elementary students. This study aims toinvestigate CSR and RTS among elementary students. A quasi-experiment with a non-randomized control grouppre-test-post-test design was used by 125 elementary school students and 3 teachers were equally assigned to theintervention and control group. Data collection used the intelligence test (CPM) and the reading comprehensiontest. Treatment was carried out over ten weeks with nine meetings for each treatment. Results showed that thereis a significant interaction effect between treatment and time, F(1, 36) = 140.27, p < .001, and a main effect oftime, F(1, 36) = 28.50, p < .001. However, there is no main effect of the treatment, F(1, 36) = 1.11, p = .299. Dueto the main effects of Time or Treatment, the post-test score (M = 18.32) is higher than the pretest ones (M =13.24), and the score of the RTS group (M = 13.95) is like one of the CSR groups (M = 12.53). It means thatchildren in the CSR group demonstrated significant improvement over than RTS group and the CSR was moreeffective than the RTS strategy. The RTS group (M = 13.95) is like the one of the CSR groups (M = 12.53, p < .05)and as expected the score of the CSR group (M = 19.89) is higher than that one of the RTS group (M = 16.7, p< .05). The CSR is a more effective method to improve reading comprehension performance for elementary schoolstudents than RTS.

Abstract

This current study aims to adapt the Work Regulatory Focus Scale into the Indonesian version, following the International Test Commission (ITC) Guidelines for Test Adaptation. Thisis cross-sectional study involved 218 participants from a local bank with several branches in Indonesia. Confirmatory Factor Analysis using Lisrel 8.80 was employed to analyze the data. Regulatory focus and work engagement are correlated to determine convergent validity, while CR (Construct Reliability) evaluates reliability. The results of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis indicate that the Work Regulatory Focus Scale model fits the data best (RMSEA = .073, NFI = .94, CFI = .96, Standardized RMR = .065, and AGFI = .93, p = .000). The scale also demonstrates good reliability, with a CR value of .798 for promotion focus and .778 for prevention focus. Furthermore, a relationship between work regulatory focus and work engagement was found. These findings indicate that the Work Regulatory Focus has good psychometric properties and provides supports for applicability in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

A cognitive assessment is not complete without an inspection of a client’s emotional status. The Emotion Word Fluency Test (EWFT) is a newly developed instrument for Indonesia. It provides similar assessment to other semantic word fluency tasks, linguistic and memory skills, and also a client’s current emotional standing and previously experienced emotions. Our study aims to present the newly-developed EWFT and its scoring system, and the psychometric properties of the test including its test-retest reliability and construct validity, as well as the reliability of the scoring system. Healthy participants with no history of brain-related diseases (n = 98), varying in age and education, were recruited; an additional group (n = 30) was included in the test-retest reliability study. The construct validity was evaluated with a phonemic verbal fluency test (pVFT). The EWFT was correlated (.51-.56) with the pVFT, and the three subscales of the pVFT correlated highly (.75-.80), indicating that the EWFT and pVFT share a common construct, but are also different. The scoring system showed excellent reliability (.86 for the number of correct generated words), and the test-retest reliability for the number of correct words was moderate (.54). Participants produced more negative than positive emotion words, t(29) = 6.33, p < .05. The correlation between the number of positive and negative emotion words was zero. Age affected the performance in both EWFT, F(3, 80) = 3.10, p < .05; and pVFT F(3, 80) = 2.47, p < .05; as was internationally reported. The EWFT scoring system is concluded reliable and the test has moderate reliability.

Abstract

This research aimed to verify the Indonesian version of the Partner’s Emotional Dependency Scale (SED), originally developed by Camarillo et al. (2020) in Spanish. The SED is a unidimensional scale with 22 items designed to measure emotional dependence on a partner. This is the first time the instrument has been adapted, particularly for use in Indonesia. The validation process employed the Rasch model to ensure the scale’s reliability and accuracy in the Indonesian context. The study involved 229 participants (F = 185, M = 44), aged between 18 and 35 (MAge = 25.5, SD = 4.23). The results confirmed the unidimensionality of the SED scale, with 2 – 3 items contributing to the second dimension. The 5-point Likert scale functioned effectively, enabling respondents to distinguish between different response options. The person-item interaction reliability was found to be .85, and the item reliability was .98, indicating excellent reliability of the SED scale items. All items were evenly distributed across the scale from high to low difficulty. However, items number 1, 3, and 7 (SED 1, SED 3, SED 7) were identified as less suitable for measuring emotional dependence and respondents found it difficult to answer these specific questions. Furthermore, three items (SED 5, SED 6, and SED 19) exhibited Differential Item Functioning (DIF) due to gender bias. The study concludes that, with some revisions and improving the translation, the Indonesian version of the SED scale could be a valuable tool for measuring the level of emotional dependence on a partner in the Indonesian population.

Abstract

Early adulthood is a vulnerable period to various problems in life. Various problems have the potential to lead individuals, especially in early adulthood, to a quarter-life crisis. This study aimed to understand the experience of falling and rising (resilience) from a quarter-life crisis. A phenomenological approach was used and involved seven participants (three men and four women) aged 25-29 years who generally have completed undergraduate education and had suicidal intentions. Collecting data using in-depth interviews. The results show that the participants who had suicidal intentions perceived that their parents’ parenting style was authoritarian, indicated by the excessive demands received. Participants are responding to this demand by rebelling against their parents. Rebellion, failure at work, and the breakdown of relationships with lovers brought them to a slump. Participants lost their purpose in life, felt depressed, and got suicidal intentions. Insight in the form of regret and hope for the future becomes a turning point in life. Acceptance from parents, peer group social support, and professional assistance are important factors in the process of recovering from the quarter-life crisis. Participants who exceed a crisis show a harmonious relationship with their parents and the opposite sex and work with the support of various parties. This research has implications for the urgency of communication and harmonious relations in the early adulthood phase, especially emerging adulthood.

Abstract

The combination of high job demands and low resources increases stress among employees, therefore organizations must ensure an appropriate workload. High job demands can be alleviated by maximizing job resources by recruiting competent, emotionally committed employees who are willing to share knowledge within the organization. This current study aims to examine the direct effects and the mediating role of work engagement on employee performance. The variables in this study were assessed through the utilization of adapted instruments, namely the Three Component Model (TCM) questionnaire for employee commitment, competencies adapted from occupational expertise and self-competence instruments, the UTRECHT Work Engagement Scale (UWES) questionnaire for work engagement, NASA TLX for mental workload, and Performance Instrument for employee performance. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving civil servants (ASN) in Tasikmalaya with a total of 243 respondents (Male = 51.4%, Female = 48.6%). Descriptive data analysis was conducted using Stata/MP 17.0, while hypothesis testing employed Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Squares (SEMPLS). The findings indicate that most research hypotheses are accepted,particularly the influence of competence and commitment on work engagement, which validates previous research findings. Only commitment and mental workload do not have direct effects on performance. These findings serve as a reference for Human Resource Management (HRM) practitioners to develop human resources through training and development initiatives,thereby enhancing work engagement and subsequently improving employee performance productivity.
