Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of relaxation techniques in reducing Arabic language anxiety among students at the Modern Islamic Boarding School Darul Mahfudz Lekopa’dis. The research aimed to assess (1) the students’ level of anxiety before the intervention, (2) the level of anxiety after the intervention, and (3) the effectiveness of relaxation techniques from a psycholinguistic perspective. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed. Data were collected through observation, interviews, the Arabic Language Anxiety Scale (SKBA), and the Arabic Speaking Proficiency Assessment Rubric (RPKBA). The sample consisted of 46 seventh-grade students divided into an experimental group (n=21) receiving relaxation techniques—breathing dhikr, positive visualization, relaxed role-playing, and staged muhadatsah—and a control group (n=25) undergoing conventional learning. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and ANCOVA. The results revealed that students’ anxiety levels before the intervention were in the moderate to high range (mean = 113.61). After the intervention, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in anxiety scores from 114.24 to 66.48 (a 42% reduction, t=6.491, p<0.001, Cohen’s d=0.957). Compared to the control group (post-test mean = 110.92), the effect size was huge (Cohen’s d = -4.012), with 85.7% of the experimental group achieving low-anxiety levels. Although the improvement in speaking performance showed a positive trend, it was not statistically significant (p=0.124). From a psycholinguistic viewpoint, reduced anxiety enhanced working memory and facilitated automatic language processing, supporting Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis.

Abstract

Arabic speaking skills are crucial for communication, but are often hampered by a lack of practice, motivation and confidence, requiring innovative project-based and technology-based strategies. The aim of this research is: 1) to describe the process of implementing project-based speaking skills learning at MAN Insan Cendekia Pesuruan; 2) explaining the impact of implementing project-based speaking skills learning at MAN Insan Cendekia Pesuruan. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study. Data were collected through observation, interviews and documentation and analysed using the Miles and Huberman models. The results of the research show that: 1) Project-based speaking skills learning with video content at MAN Insan Cendekia Pasuruan was carried out through careful planning and systematic steps, starting from group formation, theme selection, script writing, practice, recording, and screening. The themes raised were relevant to everyday life, thus supporting contextual and communicative learning, these themes include sports, seeking medical treatment, shopping, visiting sick people, and other themes.; 2) The results of the implementation showed an improvement in students' linguistic skills, such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and sentence structure, as well as non-linguistic developments in the form of confidence, motivation, and cooperation. The use of video media also provided a space for creative expression that was familiar to the students' digital world. Thus, the project-based speaking skills learning using video content model was effective in improving speaking skills while building social skills and 21st-century competencies.

Abstract

This study discusses the implementation of the Merdeka curriculum in the Arabic language subject for seventh-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 3 Kota Banjarmasin and examines the transition process from the 2013 Curriculum to the Merdeka curriculum. It explores the challenges and obstacles faced by teachers and students, particularly during the transition to a new learning paradigm. Teachers encounter major challenges in understanding and applying the concept of Merdeka Belajar, which emphasizes project-based learning, flexibility, and differentiation. The objective of this study is to analyze the implementation process of the Merdeka curriculum in seventh-grade classes, which serve as a trial for the application of the new curriculum. This study employs a qualitative descriptive research method, with data collection techniques including observation and documentation. The research findings indicate that the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum faces significant challenges among teachers and students. The main findings show there are obstacles in the theoretical and practical understanding and mastery of concepts, particularly in the preparation of Lesson Plans (Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran/RPP). This is exacerbated by the continued dominance of the 2013 Curriculum, which hinders students' adaptation to the Merdeka Curriculum. Specifically, this study highlights that teachers' lack of mastery in developing learning materials directly impacts the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the stylistic deployment of uslūb at-tafḍīl (comparative-superlative constructions) in selected sermons of Imam ʿAlī contained in Nahjul Balaghah, Volume I, as rendered into Indonesian by Muhammad Halabi. Employing a qualitative, stylistic-textual method, it maps how Arabic linguistic devices—especially ism tafḍīl—convey rhetorical force, ethical exhortation, and spiritual resonance, and examines the extent to which these effects survive translation. The data set comprises sermons that employ uslūb at-tafḍīl explicitly or implicitly; each is analysed for its grammatical form, rhetorical function (moral persuasion, social criticism, performative oath), and the shifts that occur in the target text. The findings reveal that tafḍīl transcends mere grammatical comparison, functioning as an evaluative, ideological, and pragmatic resource. The lexical and syntactic constraints of Indonesian attenuate certain nuances, especially moral intensity and emotive colouring, while Halabi's translation captures most of the expressive load. The article contributes to Arabic stylistics, Islamic rhetoric, and translation studies by underscoring the need to preserve stylistic integrity when mediating sacred discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation and supporting and inhibiting factors of the application of Al-'Arabiyah li an-Nāṭiqīna bi al-Indūnīsiyyah (ALBI) in Arabic language learning. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection methods in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and triangulation. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of ALBI is part of the reformulation of the Foreign Language Development Program (P2KBA) in intensive Arabic language learning to improve students' linguistic competence, which includes aspects of istimā', kalām, qirā'ah, and kitābah. This program is implemented twice a week with various learning methods and strategies and uses Al-'Arabiyah li an-Nāṭiqīna bi al-Indūnīsiyyah (ALBI) materials. Supporting factors for the success of this implementation include instructor competence, availability of teaching materials, and learning evaluation through the Final Online Test (FOT). Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include limited technological infrastructure, heterogeneity in student backgrounds, and suboptimal utilization of digital platforms. These findings indicate that despite significant progress, the optimization of ALBI implementation still requires improvement in various supporting aspects.

Abstract

Studies on translation techniques are still limited, even though this aspect plays a crucial role in producing accurate, acceptable, and understandable translations, especially for language learners. This study aims to describe the forms of translation techniques in the novel "The Wise Donkey," a translation of the Arabic novel "Himar Al-Hakim" by Taufiq Al-Hakim. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method, with primary data sources being the novel "Himar Al-Hakim" and its translation "The Wise Donkey," as well as secondary data from literary theory and translation. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, encompassing reduction, presentation, verification, and conclusion. Validity was maintained through source triangulation, expert consultation, and rereading of the text. This study presents 95 data points on translation techniques used by translators of the Arabic novel "Himar Al-Hakim." Researchers identified 12 translation techniques in Taufiq Al-Hakim's novel "Keledai yang Bijak," translated by Himar Al-Hakim, including adaptation, borrowing, calque, description, conventional equivalence, and transposition. Each technique has its own characteristics in conveying the meaning of a source language text. Each meaning expressed serves to facilitate understanding of a translated work, ensuring its readability and high level of acceptability. These findings contribute to the study of Arabic-Indonesian literary translation by mapping translation strategies that maintain meaning and aesthetics, and have implications for teaching translation as a practical teaching tool. The limitations of this research open up opportunities for further study of other techniques and their impact on translation quality.

Abstract

The presence of Israeli propaganda has made it difficult for Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif to report what is happening in Palestine. To ensure that Anas's news can reach the global community, Anas uses social media, especially X, to disseminate information more widely. To gain public sympathy and attention, Anas uses expressive language to encourage the global community by sharing his feelings regarding the conflict he experienced in Palestine. Therefore, this study will discuss the types of expressive speech acts in social media tweets by Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif. This qualitative study aims to describe the expressive speech acts used in social media X by Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif. The data collection method used was note-taking and documentation. The analysis stage used the pragmatic matching method.  The results of this study found the function of expressive speech acts that show speech functions, namely (1) determination, (2) anger, (3) frustration, (4) gratitude, (5) complaints, (6) misery, and (7) expressions of sadness. The expressive speech acts found in Anas Al-Sharif's tweets demonstrate subjectivity, which in this case is not considered a violation of journalistic ethics, but rather a way out to seek public sympathy amidst limitations in accessing the outside world and the unbalanced bias carried out by Western media against Israel.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to explore the strengthening of students' Arabic communication through mufradāt memorization in Islamic boarding schools. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and a mixed method, this research involves students as the main subject and is conducted in a pesantren that has a structured Arabic learning program. Data was collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and student communication ability tests. The results showed that the application of the mufradāt memorization method significantly increased the number of vocabulary mastered by students, from an average of 50 mufradāt before the intervention to 150 mufradāt after six months. In addition, there was a positive relationship between mufradāt memorization and students' speaking skills, where their confidence in using Arabic also increased. However, the study also identified several obstacles, such as a lack of motivation and monotonous teaching methods. Recommendations to overcome these obstacles include the application of more interactive learning methods, personalization approaches, and the use of technology. This research is expected to contribute to the development of Arabic teaching methods in Islamic boarding schools and improve the communication skills of students in Arabic.Keywords: Strengthening communication, Arabic, mufradāt memorization, santri, pesantren.

Abstract

This research aims to assess the efficacy of the joyful learning method, enhanced through the use of domino cards as a teaching aid, in fostering students’ motivation and understanding in Arabic language instruction. Adopting a quantitative approach, the study employed a quasi-experimental design namely, a one-group pretest-posttest format featuring a cohort of 31 eighth-grade students from MTsN 2 Surabaya. Data were gathered through the administration of pretests and posttests, complemented by classroom observations during the learning process. The statistical findings revealed a marked improvement in student outcomes, with mean scores increasing from 29.42 on the pretest to 74.74 on the posttest. The Paired Sample T-Test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the improvements were statistically significant rather than due to chance. These findings underscore the effectiveness of incorporating game-based elements into instruction, as they help foster a more dynamic, enjoyable, and productive learning environment. As such, the joyful learning approach utilizing domino cards proves to be an innovative and effective pedagogical option for Arabic language education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the direction and implementation of Arabic language instruction as a foreign language within the environment of Ma’had IAIN Kerinci. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research explores various aspects of language learning, including goal formulation, teaching methods, student motivation, and curriculum relevance. The findings reveal that the direction of Arabic instruction at Ma’had IAIN Kerinci is significantly influenced by the alignment between learning objectives, curriculum design, methodological approaches, and students’ internal factors. The primary discovery highlights that the instructional direction, which has not been explicitly formulated, contributes to a lack of cohesion between curriculum content, teaching methods, and communicative competence goals. The study underscores the importance of a well-defined instructional direction as a central element that influences the effectiveness of communicative-based pedagogical approaches. Furthermore, it suggests that curriculum reform emphasizing functional and applied language skills is essential. Innovative teaching methods also play a vital role in enhancing students’ active participation and emotional engagement. Additionally, this study identifies two major motivational poles among students—academic and religious—which shape their learning orientation and imply the necessity for a dual-responsive instructional design. These findings indicate that instructional direction is not merely a pedagogical concept but a strategic foundation that determines the quality and relevance of Arabic language education as a foreign language.
