Abstract

This study aimed to analyze statistical data related to the biological aspects of Betta imbellis as teaching material for the Animal Ecology course. The method used was purposive sampling at two different locations. A total of 30 individuals (15 individuals per location) were captured using a traditional fish trap, then measured using a digital caliper and weighed with a digital scale. The observed parameters included morphometric, meristic, length-weight relationship, sex ratio, and condition factor. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2013 and SPSS version 22. The results showed differences in morphometric (DBL, ABL, CPD, LUCL, LMCL, LCLL) and meristic (AR) characters between populations. The growth pattern was negative allometric (b < 3). The male-to-female sex ratio was 2:1, while the condition factor ranged from 1.82–2.05 (K) and 245.76–455.70 (Wr). In conclusion, these findings provide preliminary data to support conservation efforts of wild Betta imbellis and serve as teaching material for the Animal Ecology course. Abstract

This study aimed to identify and analyze the symbolism of the muntjac deer depicted in the Karmawibhangga Relief at Borobudur Temple through an ethnozoological approach and its relevance to character education values. The method used was a qualitative descriptive approach with an ethnographic design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, literature study, and documentation, and analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that five muntjac deer individuals are depicted across three panels, namely panels 93, 105, and 109. Morphometric analysis shows a high level of proportional similarity between the relief depiction and the real-life muntjac deer. The symbolism of the muntjac deer in the relief represents ahimsa, gentleness, and ecological background markers. In conclusion, the presence of the muntjac deer in the Karmawibhangga Relief holds symbolic meanings that are relevant to character education values, particularly peace-loving and responsibility. Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of Moringa oleifera administration on CD36 mRNA expression in rat tissues exposed to ethylene glycol. The method used was an experimental design with gene expression analysis performed using RT-PCR and GAPDH as an internal control gene. The results showed that CD36 mRNA expression increased in the ethylene glycol-exposed group compared to the normal group. In the treatment groups, different doses of Moringa oleifera produced varied expression responses, where a certain dose reduced gene expression toward normal conditions, while a higher dose increased the expression again. The expression of GAPDH remained relatively stable across all groups, confirming its suitability as a reference gene. In conclusion, Moringa oleifera administration affects CD36 mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner and has the potential to attenuate the toxic effects of ethylene glycol at specific doses. Keywords: Ethylene Glycol, Moringa Leaf, CD36 mRNA Expression

Abstract

This study aimed to document wild plants used as medicinal resources by the Mandailing ethnic community in Lubuk Barumun District, Padang Lawas Regency, and to identify plant diversity, processing methods, utilized plant organs, and phytochemical contents of the most frequently used species. The research employed a descriptive method, with data collected through open interviews involving 20 respondents and field observations, followed by qualitative phytochemical screening of three dominant species. The results revealed 20 plant species belonging to 13 families used in traditional medicine. Leaves were the most commonly utilized plant organ, while pounding and boiling were the primary preparation methods. Phytochemical screening indicated that Ageratum conyzoides L., Acalypha indica L., and Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl contain flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids, with alkaloids detected in Stachytarpheta jamaicensis. In conclusion, the traditional healing practices of the Mandailing community are supported by the presence of potentially pharmacologically active secondary metabolites and reflect sustainable utilization of biological resources; however, further quantitative and pharmacological studies are required to strengthen scientific validation.   Keywords: Ethnobotany, Phytochemistry, Mandailing Community, Traditional Knowledge, Medicinal Plants

Abstract

This study aimed to describe and analyze the potential biodiversity of Jombang Regency that can be integrated into biology learning to equip students with sustainability values. The research method used was descriptive qualitative. The data sources consisted of: (1) biodiversity data from Jombang obtained from 18 articles resulting from student research projects selected using a purposive sampling technique; (2) biology learning profile data collected from 25 senior high school biology teachers from 13 schools in Jombang using snowball sampling; and (3) data from 20 articles obtained through a systematic literature review from Google Scholar and the SINTA portal using the keywords “biodiversity”, “environmental utilization”, and “biology learning”. The results showed that seven types of invertebrates and one type of vertebrate were found in various ecosystems, such as surrounding environments, gardens, parks, residential areas, rice fields, fields, ponds, and forests. These biodiversity resources have the potential to be utilized as learning resources and teaching materials, such as modules and booklets, to improve students’ knowledge, reading interest, learning motivation, critical thinking skills, biological literacy, and environmental awareness. In addition, biodiversity-based learning can also foster sustainability values, including critical thinking, systems thinking, self-awareness, collaboration, anticipatory competence, normative competence, strategic competence, and problem-solving skills in biology learning. The conclusion of this study indicates that biodiversity in Jombang has the potential to be utilized in biology learning as learning resources and teaching materials that enhance students’ skills while instilling sustainability values. This effort also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 14 and 15.   Keywords: Biodiversity, Biology Learning, Jombang, Sustainability Values

Abstract

This study aimed to examine how science education grounded in scientific practices, socioscientific issues (SSI), and the integration of STEM–Computational Thinking (CT) can foster future competencies among elementary school students. The method employed is a literature review analyzing relevant studies on 21st-century science learning, scientific literacy, and technology integration. The findings indicate that when science is taught as an epistemic activity—through inquiry, modeling, and evidence-based argumentation—and connected to meaningful social and environmental contexts, it simultaneously strengthens the 4C skills (critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication), scientific literacy, data-digital literacy, and scientific character. The review also highlights key implementation prerequisites, including curriculum autonomy, formative performance-based assessment, meaningful technological ecosystems, and sustained teacher professional development. In conclusion, science education built upon practice, context, and technology offers a strategic framework for developing cross-domain competencies in elementary education.
