Abstract

This study aimed to develop and examine the effectiveness of an ethnoscience-based interactive digital media on peatland issues entitled Guardian of Gambut for the topic of Ecosystems and Biodiversity in junior high school. The study was motivated by students’ low critical thinking skills and scientific literacy, as well as their limited environmental awareness due to science instruction that remains focused on memorization and lacks contextualization to local ecological issues. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, followed by a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design. The participants were students of class VIIB as the control group and VIIC as the experimental group at SMP Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. The findings indicate that the developed media was categorized as very valid and highly practical, and proven effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills, scientific literacy, and environmental care attitudes. The experimental group demonstrated higher improvement than the control group, with significant differences and a large effect size. In conclusion, the Guardian of Gambut interactive digital media is valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students’ cognitive and affective competencies through contextual ethnoscience-based science learning.   Keywords: Critical Thinking, Environmental Care Attitude, Interactive Digital Media, Peatland Ethnoscience, Scientific Literacy

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of biological competence and career readiness of students in the Biology Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Riau (UIR) in the Academic Year 2024/2025. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The sample consisted of students from the Biology Education Study Program at UIR. A closed-ended questionnaire was designed to measure indicators of biological competence, including conceptual understanding, laboratory skills, critical thinking ability, and the application of biology in real-life contexts. Meanwhile, career readiness was evaluated based on students’ perceptions of their self-potential, career goals, and readiness to enter professional fields such as teaching, research, and biology-based entrepreneurship (bioedupreneur). In-depth interviews were conducted to follow up on the questionnaire results, while academic documentation was used to obtain supporting data related to students’ academic status and learning outcomes. Data were analyzed using univariate statistical analysis. The results show that students possess good biological competence, particularly in conceptual understanding and basic laboratory skills. In addition, students’ career readiness is categorized as high, as indicated by their interest and preparedness to pursue careers as teachers, research assistants, or bioedupreneurs. In conclusion, the implemented curriculum has been able to equip students with knowledge and skills relevant to the demands of the professional world and support their career readiness.   Keywords: Bioedupreneur, Biological Competence, Career Readiness

Abstract

This study aimed to detect the presence of porcine DNA (Sus scrofa domesticus) in sausage products circulating in Medan City using the Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (Real-Time PCR) method with the GeneChecker instrument. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach using five sausage samples collected from traditional markets, street vendors, and food stores through purposive sampling techniques. The research procedures included sample preparation, DNA extraction, master mix preparation, and amplification using porcine-specific primers. The test results were analyzed based on the Cycle Threshold (Ct) value on the FAM channel as the target for porcine DNA and the ROX channel as the internal control. The results showed that all samples had a Ct value of FAM = 0.00, indicating no detection of porcine DNA, while the Ct values of ROX ranged from 18–20, confirming that the internal control amplification process functioned properly. The positive control showed a valid Ct value, confirming that the PCR system and reagents operated optimally. In conclusion, all tested sausage samples showed no contamination of porcine DNA and were therefore considered negative for porcine DNA based on the Real-Time PCR analysis. The Real-Time PCR method using the GeneChecker instrument is effective and accurate for supporting halal verification of processed food products. Abstract

This research aimed to analyze fault lineament patterns based on gravity anomaly data in the Yogyakarta region. The method used is the gravity method. Primary gravity data from BMKG measurements in Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta City, and Sleman Regency were processed to produce a Complete Bouguer Anomaly Map. The data were analyzed using regional-residual anomaly separation, as well as First Horizontal Derivative (FHD) and Second Vertical Derivative (SVD) techniques to clarify geological structure boundaries. The results showed that the complete Bouguer anomaly distribution ranges from 56.06 mGal to 130.38 mGal. Derivative analysis successfully identified two main fault structures: the Opak Fault in the southern part with a southwest-northeast direction spanning approximately 44.8 km, and the Mataram Fault in the northern part with a west-east direction spanning approximately 27.2 km. There is a good correlation between high gravity anomalies and high Vs30 values, which indicates compact rocks and more stable soil conditions against earthquake shocks, and vice versa. In conclusion, two main fault structures were identified in the research area, namely the Opak Fault in the south with a southwest-northeast direction and the Mataram Fault in the north with a west-east direction. Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of honje fruit (Etlingera hemisphaerica) extract on the body weight of male mice (Mus musculus). The method used was an experimental study with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). A total of 25 male mice were divided into five groups consisting of one control group and four treatment groups receiving extract doses of 0.13 mg/kgBW, 0.26 mg/kgBW, 0.38 mg/kgBW, and 0.52 mg/kgBW for 10 days. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, homogeneity test, and ANOVA. The results showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous, and there was no significant difference in mean body weight among treatment groups. In conclusion, administration of honje fruit extract at various doses does not significantly affect the body weight of male mice during the treatment period. Abstract

This study aimed to improve the critical thinking skills of first-semester students of the Biology Education Program at FITK UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method. The study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design, specifically the one group pretest-posttest design, due to limited accessibility in conducting the research. The population consisted of 44 participants, including 9 male and 35 female students, selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected through tests, and the analysis included normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis testing. The results showed that the average pretest score was 82.39 and the posttest score was 86.59, both categorized as high. The paired sample t-test revealed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. Furthermore, the Cohen’s d effect size value of 0.5028 falls into the medium category, indicating a moderate effect. In conclusion, the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model through the Focus Group Discussion method effectively improves students’ critical thinking skills, as indicated by improvements in understanding (3.2%), analytical skills (4.12%), evaluation skills (4.62%), and problem-solving skills (5.04%). Abstract

This study aimed to determine the readiness and thinking habits of students, namely self-regulation and critical thinking in facing biology learning based on deep learning. The study was conducted using descriptive qualitative - quantitative methods, namely data collection with questionnaire results and observations during the learning process supported by the results of student answers through interviews. Participants in this study were 103 students of class X digital media at SMA Islam Sultan Agung 1 Semarang who received biology subjects on environmental change. The results of the study were collected through a habits of mind questionnaire with a score of 81 in the very good category. The observation results showed that students' habits of mind scored 71.53 in the good category and deep learning data scored 54.19 in the sufficient category. Strengthened by interview data, habits of mind were already good although not optimal, but in deep learning data still need optimization even though some have been implemented. Thus, the habits of mind of class X students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 1 Semarang need to be improved to support the implementation of deep learning learning which is still not optimal in its preparation.
