Abstract

Self-efficacy is a critical factor influencing nurses' performance in disaster scenarios, particularly in high-pressure environments like Emergency Departments (ED) and Intensive Care Units (ICU). This study aimed to evaluate the self-efficacy of nurses in disaster preparedness and identify its key predictors, including demographic characteristics, training experience, and professional factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 185 nurses working in the ED and ICU of three hospitals in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected from January to February 2024 using a structured questionnaire that included the Disaster Response Self-Efficacy Scale (DRSES). Descriptive statistics summarized demographic data and self-efficacy scores. Inferential analyses, including t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression, were performed to explore relationships between self-efficacy and potential predictors, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Disaster training experience emerged as the strongest predictor of self-efficacy (β = 0.65, p < 0.001), with nurses who underwent regular training demonstrating significantly higher confidence. Years of experience (β = 0.48, p = 0.01) and age (β = 0.25, p = 0.04) were also positively associated with self-efficacy. However, gender, education level, and marital status showed weak and non-significant correlations (r = 0.12–0.18, p > 0.05). Correlation analysis reinforced the importance of disaster training (r = 0.65, p < 0.001) and professional experience (r = 0.48, p = 0.01) in shaping self-efficacy. The findings underscore the importance of regular disaster training and leveraging professional experience to enhance self-efficacy among ED and ICU nurses. Policymakers and hospital administrators should prioritize targeted training programs to build a resilient nursing workforce capable of responding effectively to disasters

Abstract

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a common complication among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, characterized by atherosclerosis that leads to the narrowing of the arteries in the legs and feet. PAD complications include pain, neuropathy, and potential limb amputation. This study reviews the effectiveness of the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) as a diagnostic tool for PAD detection in diabetic patients. A literature review was conducted, sourcing 266 articles from PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases within the 2019-2024 period; six articles met the inclusion criteria. The analysis indicates that ABI is a sensitive and accurate diagnostic method, particularly for patients with an ABI <0.9 who are at higher risk of cardiovascular complications. PAD risk factors include older age, hypertension, and smoking. ABI also shows high concordance with Doppler Ultrasonography (DUS) for various degrees of arterial stenosis. In conclusion, ABI is a reliable, non-invasive diagnostic tool for early PAD detection in diabetic patients. Routine use of ABI in screening programs may help prevent further complications through early diagnosis and intervention, especially for patients with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by cartilage damage, with pain being one of the most frequent complaints among patients. Globally, approximately 151.4 million people suffer from OA, including 27.4 million in Southeast Asia, making it a leading cause of disability among adults. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a significant risk factor influencing the development and severity of OA. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between BMI and osteoarthritis severity. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, with data collected from medical records of 106 osteoarthritis patients, selected through total sampling. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality, followed by the Pearson correlation test for normally distributed data. The analysis revealed a significant relationship between BMI and the degree of osteoarthritis (p = 0.001, r = 0.308), indicating a low-strength correlation. These findings suggest that higher BMI is associated with increased severity of osteoarthritis. Further research and targeted interventions are recommended to manage BMI as part of osteoarthritis prevention and treatment strategies.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country with a high risk of natural disasters. Nurses as the main element in health care, hold an important role in disaster management. Therefore, nurses who are competent in disaster management are needed. This study aimed to describe core competencies in disaster nursing in facing natural disasters among nurses in a general hospital that is located near the coastal areas. A descriptive quantitative research method was used in this study. Samples were recruited using the simple random sampling technique. The data were collected using DNCCS and analyzed using univariate data analysis. 120 nurses who participated in this study had a higher score (mean = 246.52). Uniquely, nurses who had parcipated in disaster training actually had a lower score (mean = 246.43). In contrast to nurses who had participated in disaster volunteering, they had a higher score overall even though they were small (n=25). Overall, nurses have a high level of preparedness in disaster management. The lack of participation of nurses in disaster volunteers is a serious concern, so it is suggested to the Nursing Division to involve nurses in disaster volunteer both local and national scale disasters.

Abstract

Hand hygiene is a simple step that is most effective to prevent patients from HAIs in hospitals. Therefore, its practice must be implemented by healthcare providers continuously. Its compliance among nurses must always be monitored to optimise safe health care and services, protecting providers and patients during hospitalization. This study aims to identify the implementation of five moment's and six step's hand hygiene by nurses in the inpatient rooms of two hospitals with different ownership status in the South Sulawesi Province. The study used a descriptive quantitative method with an observational approach. This study used a quota sample of 76 nurses and used the WHO adaptation of the Hand Hygiene Compliance (KKT) observation sheet. The study found that the implementation of five moment's hand hygiene by nurses at Hospitals A and B accounted for 15.2% and 8.8%, respectively, and the implementation of six step's hand hygiene was 9.9% and 7%. Hand hygiene compliance by inpatient nurses at Hospital A and Hospital B is in the non-compliant category, not in accordance with WHO recommendations, which are ≥85%. Further research is recommended to focus on factors related to compliance in implementing hand hygiene in hospitals as well as research in developing programs to improve hand hygiene compliance for nurses in health care facilities.

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis is a common degenerative condition among the elderly, leading to a significant decline in functional ability and increased dependency in daily activities. This study aimed to analyze the level of independence and pain distribution among elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis at the Geriatric Polyclinic of a General Hospital. A descriptive design was utilized, using secondary data from 150 elderly patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. Independence levels were assessed using the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scale, while pain location data were retrieved from medical records. The findings revealed that 72.7% of patients maintained independence, while 27.3% required assistance, with bilateral pain reported in 87.3% of cases. Most patients were aged 71–90 years, with a predominance of females (78.7%). These results indicate that the majority of elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis remain functionally independent, although age and gender significantly influence the prevalence and severity of the condition.
